I particularly wanted a batsman who could act as 4th seamer and Mathews has done pretty well with the ball, often opening the bowling for SL in T20Is. There were some options in the last 2 rounds for that role, but Mathews will be fine here considering all the other top SL batsmen have been picked.
Plus, Mathews is a trendy pick which I need since my team is looking a little dated...'like totally 2009 OMG' Although in saying that...a couple of his best games were at the 2009 World T20. The semi-final he took 3 wickets in the first over vs WI to cripple their chase, then in the final vs Pakistan he came in at #8 when SL were in trouble and made 35* from 24 balls.
That was something I noticed looking through his record. Mathews hasn't really had the opportunities in the SL batting order thus far: 10 of his 23 T20I innings have been at #7/#8, another 5 innings at #6. For the innings where he does bat #4/#5 he averages around 27, but most of those innings have been after quick wickets at the top so his strike rate has suffered. His bowling in T20Is has been very tidy, an economy under 7 is always good for a pace bowler.
You might have noticed that he played a blinder in the SLPL final a couple of weeks ago where he cracked 73* off 27 balls against a pretty reasonable attack from Uva Next (Umar Gul got his share from Mathews). That is his highest score in T20, a good example of the kind of talent he has.
Has a reputation as a cool headed finisher, and as a good fielder. Both very useful for my team.
