Alastair Cook & Stuart Broad - England's new headboys

Its not that they axed him , Strauss himself admitted that it was highly unlikely whether he was good enough to play the next WC given that he turns 38 then . So , why not start a new era with a young & a talented skipper like Cook and get him enough experience in time for the next WC or for this case , the next Champions Trophy in England (2013) ??

I don't think Strauss is a good captain anyway, not a lot wrong with him as a batsman, but his captaincy is wooden, predictable and not terribly good. The lack of balance and an all-rounder in the side means he worries too much about getting through the 4th and 5th bowler, even when the team needs to take wickets which just gives the opposition the advantage/game.

For me this is no surprise, the move to make another Test player captain. England have clearly convinced themselves they didn't win down to luck, injuries, fatigue etc and ignored the facts that the fatigue is because they pick Test players :rolleyes , selections were poor (Wright, Yardy, plus a few players they didn't turn to until their choices were running out) and key players didn't perform.

I repeat my assertion they need to pick players for ODIs separately, takes a whole heap of fixtures out of the two squads' schedules AND MORE IMPORTANTLY the ODI squad can be playing county cricket and getting games/experience in the one day format while the Test squad is playing Tests. At the moment those who play in 2-3 formats for England mostly play those formats for England. It would also reduce the problems, no matter how small, of playing say four Tests and then having to switch to a shorter format (T20Is/ODIs depending on which they play) before heading off on tour to go back to the beginning (Tests). You can't tell me that it's easy to mentally adjust with no detrimental effect.

Or let's put it another way, England have tried the current set-up and it's failed in every World Cup since 1992. Sure there have been a few tweaks between bits n pieces 'all-rounders' and specialist bowlers, but the Test players have played in all and the one day game has developed far too much. What will be said next time England flop in the World Cup? Fatigue? (again) Injuries? (risk increased by too much cricket) Luck? (some say you make your own) While picking separate squads may increase the chances of Yardys and Wrights getting picked, it will increase their freshness, preparation and have the right focus.

Collingwood, Bell, Pietersen, Prior and Anderson make the case that Test players aren't necessarily the best for ODIs. We have enough of a player pool with fringe players who regular Test players keep out of the Test squad (and ODI squad) to manage two separate squads - Davies, Morgan, Bresnan, Tredwell, Dernbach, Shah, Patel, Bopara and Rashid to name nine off the top of my head who don't feature regularly in Tests but have been in or around the ODI squad. That's no worse than half the current Test team, only steady eddy Trott, Strauss, Broad and Swann would be that hard to replace but it's not as if them being in the squad at the World Cup, or in the past with equivalents INCLUDING FLINTOFF, has got us to semis or made us look remotely like contenders.

All making Cook captain and thus adding another Test player to the ODI set-up does is deny there is a bigger problem.

What the hell? :facepalm You can expect these sort of retarded decisions from the PCB, but the ECB?

"OK guys, we've just had a pretty abismal performance. What can we do to move forward?"

"Oh, I know. Let's pick a player who hasn't played the format in ages, was never good in the format to begin with, and draft him in to the XI. And just for kicks, let's make him captain as well."

Should've gone for KP.

Interesting point. And one I agree with. Whatever happened to Dimitri Masschrenas, btw?

I remember predicting that Strauss would retire from ODI's in the World Cup forum but got told off by War. Can I have my cookie now? :p

I'm going to stick my neck out and give Cook a chance, he's changed a lot and he is a very talented player and I think could make a very good captain. It's a bit of a risk, but I'm willing to give him the chance. Does make you wonder what we're going to be seeing come the Sri Lanka ODI's.

Cook
Kieswetter
Trott
KP

As a top 4?

Broad for T20s is interesting, outside the box thinking. Can't say I have much of an opinion, T20s is all about a bit of fun, might be a good experience for him, which he can take in to the other formats.

I agree with that. I'm all for giving Cook the chance to take charge of the one-day side but I would have preferred Strauss to stay on 'cause he was playing well in ODIs.

I like that top 4 of Cook, Kieswetter, Trott and KP. I think it's time to bring back Kieswetter. He's in good form, having just scored a century against Worcestershire and the 95* against Glamorgan in the CB40. Davies is also in pretty good nick as well, two scores of 90+ in his last couple of matches.

I'll be interested to see how Broad gets on. I thought Collingwood would have been able to hang on to his job despite his poor form.

It's a shame, I've enjoyed watching Strauss bat in ODIs, but I think he wants another Ashes win under his belt in 2013 and then will call time on his career. It's the right time for us to blood in Cook and mould him in to a good ODI player, which I believe he can be.

Colly has been struggling physically of late, I don't see him in the 2015 World Cup and I wouldn't be surprised if he announces total England retirement within the next year. Coupled with his poor form, I don't think he'll want to try and play too much longer if he can't turn it around.

I think both Davies and Kieswetter would be good choices for England in the pyjama setup. Not much difference in their keeping, Davies slightly edging (pun intended) it perhaps, I really don't know how to choose between the two.

Only in England would a player not even playing the format get selectede as their new captain - besides Pakistan, obviously.

And Broad, a captain ?!. He throws toys out his pram the instant a decision goes against him.

If merit, and not nepotism, was the criterion, then Ian Bell should have got the captaincy for both formats - a true ambassador of the game who has reshaped his career and been dominant domestically - yet unfortunately for him, an Irishman and South Africans deny him a permanent First Team berth.

So does Broad being named as the t20 skipper make him the first bowler to captain a side after ages ?? Anil Kumble was the last bowler to captain an international side IIRC . TBH , I'm like 50-50 to both the decisions made by the ECB . And I agree with Sureshot's top 4 batters , Kieswetter deserves the callup again .

Afridi.

Whilst he has lost his batting form considerably , he still remains an Allrounder . Same applies to the likes of Vettori , Sammy , etc.

That's an understatement.

He is no more an all-rounder than Harbajhan.
