All Time India Test XI Draft (Shravi)

Never mind, he's gone to bed. He's not online on PC anymore.

Seeing as how CM picked one of the two picks I had lined up for this turn, I decided to leave my decision for a second seamer later, and pick out 2 batsmen instead...

The first is a player I was very surprised to see not picked. This man is an all-time great of Indian cricket - when he retired, he held the record for most Test runs and most centuries till Sunny came and broke them. He was India's first hero in an era when they were the whipping boys of world cricket, and inevitably any Indian victory was shaped around his performances as either a captain or a batsman. He was the first Indian to hit a Test double century, led India to 2 wins and 2 losses in the 8 tests he captained them, and averaged 42 in a tricky era for batsman. He was also a brilliant fielder, one of the best India has had, and a very capable part-time bowler (he is only the second Indian after Mankad to take 5 wickets and hit a century in the same Test match). Say hello to Polly Umrigar.

And my second pick goes to India's finest number 3 after Dravid. This man, alongside Gavaskar, was the rock of India's batting for over a decade, and for a brief while the finest player in the world. Stylish, elegant, and yet able to stand up to bowlers like Imran Khan, Sarfraz Nawaz, Malcolm Marshall, Abdul Qadir, Wasim Akram, Muralitharan and Richard Hadlee. While he much preferred batting in the middle order (He averaged 48.72 in 94 innings at 4 and 5), it was often due to necessity and the lack of quality players that he was forced to bat at number 3 for a large part of his career. He held the record for the highest second-wicket partnership of 344 runs with Gavaskar, and at his time of retiring was only behind Gavaskar in terms of runs and centuries scored. I introduce you to a legend of Indian cricket, and my number 3 (for now), Dilip Vengsarkar

Before Leggie stole him, I had to swoop in and do it myself. He started his career as a swashbuckling batsman who didn't even have the word 'defense' in his dictionary. All he knew was how to attack. His keeping was okay, but not good enough when compared with international standards. Since then, he has improved by leaps and bounds. He has transformed his temperament and curbed his aggression so that his style is better suited for both ODI and test cricket. He hasn't seen as much success as he would have liked to in Test cricket, however, that average is steadily on the rise. That's to say- don't be fooled by his current test and First Class average. In fact, in the last 3 years, his average has been 41 and in the last 12 months, it's been at 54. He may not be the best pure keeper India has had but I'm certain he's well on his way towards becoming India's number one keeper-batsman.

Gautam Gambhir

Just yesterday, I had scoffed at the idea of having Gautam Gambhir in my All Time Indian team. 'He's too young', I thought, 'too unproven'.

As I mulled over the idea in the hours that followed, I began to appreciate Gambhir's calibre as a batsman more and more. His technique is near perfect. His aggressive style mixed with his new found maturity has brought out the best in his batting. He may even be one of the best opening batsman India have ever produced, with a staggering average of over 54. His inclusion in the side gives a rock solid presence in the top order, sure to get me off to a good start. His recent performances propelled him up the rankings, and he is now the number one Test batsman in the world.

I was going to scoff at the idea of having gambhir in an all time indian XI but then I checked and there's only 2 players that have scored more tons than him opening and 3 players with more runs.

so it's pretty likely he'll go down well even if his career is only just taking shape.

it makes you wonder though, with sehwag and gambhir playing cricket what the hell were india opening with Jaffer and Karthik, just 2 years ago, for?

Exactly. I think he's easily the fourth best opening batsman India have produced, behind Gavaskar, Merchant, and Sehwag. I'm fairly certain, with the technique he has, that Gambhir will overtake Sehwag before their careers are over.

Sehwag's method of scoring runs are obviously relied heavily apon by his amazing hand-eye coordination and reflexes. But, as he starts to age, this traits will wane and we'll see Sehwag go downhill (unless he changes his technique, which I really doubt).

This very thing happened to another quite famous Indian opener...

some Indian fans you people are, cant pick a legend and the draft is more then half done.

Ravi Shastri.

Shastri might not have cut a dashing figure on the field as he pushed and prodded and grafted his way for runs and his bowling was little more than defensive as he pegged away on a good length without much variation. Nevertheless he was a vital asset to Indian cricket team during the 80's.
