Another draft!-Test players of the 90s and later - FINISHED!

Great choice. I was thinking of Asif to be my Glenn McGrath-clone type bowler to partner with Warne. But anyway I'm glad you picked Asif - that ruled out the temptation. So it's back to plan A: this man...

Younis Khan

The 3rd member of Pakistan's middle order trinity (Yousuf and Inzamam being the others). Averaging 50 isn't quite what it used to be, but for a modern Pakistani it means a bit more since Pakistan have mostly played away from home in the last few years (Younis has only played 19 of his 67 Tests in Pakistan). Had a fairly slow start to his Test career, only averaging over 50 in 1 of his first 4 years in cricket. But from 2004, he has averaged over 50 in every calendar year making him Pakistan's most consistent and reliable batsman. A great man at #3 to anchor my middler order around. After his 313 vs Sri Lanka he reached the top of the ICC rankings, a feat not too many batsmen achieve. Excellent player of spin as his high averages against India and Sri Lanka indicate.

Younis is also a better fielder than most of his Pakistani teammates. Pretty surehanded in the slips and used to get a lot of run outs in ODIs. He's also a likeable guy to - seems to smile a lot. I like those kind of cricketers. He'll also be able to rekindle his friendship with Warney from their days at the double Rs (Rajasthan Royals). I think he only ever played once for them...but it's something to help my team unity :)

Round 4 - West Indies

Jimmy Adams

020236.jpg

Debut: On 18th April, 1992 against South Africa at Bridgetown

In the first half of his career, Jimmy Adams generated phenomenal statistics. After 12 Tests, only Bradman had a better record than his 1132 runs at 87, yet Adams never developed an aura to match his average. Born in Jamaica to a pair of doctors, he grew up as a clinical left-hander, willowy and strong off his legs, whose unblinking concentration shone out through a string of big hundreds and not-outs. In the mid-'90s, however, he suffered a crisis of confidence, a problem that may have stemmed from an unfortunate incident on the 1995 tour of England. Batting in fading light, Adams ducked into a bouncer from Somerset's Andre van Troost, shattering his cheekbone.

An increasingly defensive player, especially when facing spin, he proved just as negative in his tactics when appointed captain in 2000. His tenure started well with four wins and two draws in his first six games, but thereafter a weak side lost their way and he lost seven of his next eight matches, culminating in a 5-0 whitewash in Australia. That tour marked the end of his Test career. A sharp catcher in the gully, his left-arm tweakers remain a handy sideline

I just copied the description from Cricinfo as I need to leave for a medical check-up right now.

Again, I take him as a batsman and not as a wicket-keeper.

Stats:

M: 54 | I: 90 | Runs: 3012 | HS: 208* | Average: 41.26 | 100: 6 | 50: 14

Younis is a pretty good pick. Definitely would have taken him if I hadn't got Kallis. And, yes, West Indies round is really difficult. I was thinking of having Jimmy Adams as well but now he's gone. Will have to see whom I pick.

He'll also be able to rekindle his friendship with Warney from their days at the double Rs (Rajasthan Royals). I think he only ever played once for them...but it's something to help my team unity
He he :p

Also, Yudi, would you please put your players in respective numbers in your XI?

Same situation was with me. Younis was a member of one of the strongest middle order that Pakistan could have. All three had above 50 average for most of his career but Inzamam slips from 50 to 49. something in the last last year of his career.
Asif for me will make a perfect blend with Donald. Donald with his pace and Asif with his line and length can be extremely good on any wicket.

Jimmy Adams = good pick. It's a great trivia question actually: name the West Indian batsman who was the #1 rated batsman in the world in 1995...and of course everyone would say Lara, but nope it was Jimmy Adams...for that brief moment in time anyway.

Round 4 : West Indies

Shivnarine Chanderpaul

Debut vs England at Georgetown, Mar 17-22, 1994

Matches : 133 | Runs : 9367 | HS : 203* | Ave : 49.04 | 100's : 23

He might not be the quickest of the run scorers but he surely knows how to play under pressure. At times, he might be irritating to watch for the cricket fans but the truth is that he is a great player for his team. He is someone who doesn't give away his wicket too easily to the opposition, similar to Dravid one might say.

My Team
1.
2.
3. Inzamam-ul-Haq
4. Shivnarine Chanderpaul
5. Sourav Ganguly
6.
7.
8.
9.
10.
11. Glenn Mcgrath

I'll do the write up for Inzamam soon. :)

@ Sifter - Though, he's pretty slow. Not too comfortable against the spinners.

Whaaaaat? no no, Younis and Chanderpaul both gone. And the Asif pick is a little controversial :p

Yeah, I won't really take Asif/Aamer/Butt. Can actually think about Aamer but not the other two. Why have fixers in your side?

I respect your feelings but here we are picking players base on thier skills in cricket so I guess they should be pick if they have skills in cricket. Whatever they have done is more then bad and we all have said enough about that.

I am going for the modern day Abdul Qadir- Mushtaq Ahmed. He wasn't the thinnest cricketer going around but he was very skillful, and on his day was as good as Warnie. He is a true wicket-taking bowler with many variations to out think the batsman. In 52 matches (89 innings as a bowler) he took 185 wickets at an average of 32.97 at a strike rate of 67.7 with 6 four-fors, 10 five-fors and 3 10WMs.

I went for him over another Pakistani legspinner because he has been involved in match fixing allegations. The current off spinner in the team is still fairly unproven and the banned left arm fast bowler cannot be selected on principle and because he is unproven in some conditions. Also, there were no batsmen I wanted from that list.

Round 3 : Pakistan

Inzamam-ul-haq

Debut vs England at Birmingham, Jun 4-8, 1992

Matches : 120| Runs : 8830| HS : 329* | Ave : 60| 100's : 25

Many people say that Inzamam is Pakistan's best batsman ever. Although his fitness was not the fitness that one expects from a cricketer but even though he was not very fit, he was still a great cricketer. Someone who was quick in scoring his runs and also someone who was a very fine captain. He is someone who is very down to earth and that's why he is regarded a lot throughout this world by cricket fans and by cricketers as well not only as a cricketer but also as a person, off the field.
