Australia tour of SA 2014

Australia's only warm up match is washed out. I think the Australia would have loved to get the practice ahead of the tour matches but nevertheless they have few more days to practice nets and some site seeing. :p Btw, this is what CSA posted on its wall earlier tonight.

Cricket South Africa said:
Cricket South Africa (CSA) and Cricket Australia (CA) have reached a collaborative decision to cancel Australia's four-day warm-up match against a South Africa Invitational XI scheduled from 5-8 February in Potchefstroom. There has been torrential rain in the area over the last few days which has hampered the squad's training, with the forecast for the coming days also looking gloomy. Australia will travel to Johannesburg today, and are scheduled to have practice at SuperSport Park in Centurion tomorrow morning.

Australia have also postponed the open media session which was scheduled for Tuesday, 5 February. Further details will be advised in due course.

Australia's media and training schedule for the remainder of the week will also be advised as soon as possible.

Ryan McLaren not doing as much bowling in the second Innings, so hopefully that means that he is leading the way for the bowling all-rounder position. Parnell had a injury problem, plus hasn't been the best of the bowlers, so shouldn't be picked for the first test now, which is good.

Just hope Kleinveldt doesn't get the spot, he's done well in this match, but I think that's more due to the pressure from the bowlers at the other end.

A injury scare for Duminy as well, but they've said he should be okay.

It's strange that they couldn't play the Australian tour match somewhere else. They had a week before the 1st test, to find somewhere else to play.

NO! I want Hughes. Was looking at Doolan's recent scores and it's not real pretty...If he shows some form in the tour match, that'd be a start, but he seems ice cold right now. His last 100 was the very first game of the Shield, back in early November.

Selectors would look pretty dam silly if they didn't pick him. He was a bee dick from making an Ashes debut and Hughes wasn't even in the squad until Marsh pulled out.

Looks like the final team will hopefully be:

Graeme Smith
Alviro Petersen
Hashim Amla
Faf du Plessis
AB de Villiers
Jean-Paul Duminy
Ryan McLaren
Robin Peterson
Vernon Philander
Dale Steyn
Morne Morkel

Dean Elgar didn't do well enough to be in contention. Thami Tsolekile isn't a good enough batsmen to be playing test cricket, and batting at seven. Wayne Parnell is very talented, but really needs some more time playing first class cricket, before he plays another test. Kleinveldt is an option, but McLaren is probably a better batsmen & bowler.

South Africa really needs to learn from the mistake Zimbabwe has made, you can't have a majority of a certain race in a team XI, when your not picking your best players.

This is true. Doolan has the inside track. But I'm thinking a Steve Smith in the Ashes-style selection. He leapfrogged Cowan, Khawaja and Hughes on that tour despite not being named in the original squad.

I wonder if the pitch is really green whether we'd see an alternative option come up - Henriques at 8. Similar thing happened last tour with Andrew McDonald at 8. Use Steve Smith and M.Clarke as your spin options. Lengthens your batting if the conditions look bowler friendly. I wouldn't particularly like it, but I don't think it could be ruled out right now.

Phil Hughes must be selected to play in the first Test match against South Africa and bat at number 3, in my opinion.

Shane Watson simply hasn't been making the big scores in the first innings you need from the number 3 batsman in your team. The number 3 position in the team is the most important because if your openers fail the number 3 batsman has the chance to make a big score and stay at the middle, so you don't leave your order middle order exposed. Watson's scores with the bat in the Ashes against England were 22, 6, 51, 18, 103, 83*, and 43. His two highest scores of 103 and 83* were in the second innings when the work had already been done and the pressure was off. That means his highest score in the first innings was 51, which almost sums up his career with the bat, he gets in and makes a start and then finds a way to get out. Add that with him frequently getting injured and limiting how much he can bowl, it makes me wonder why the selectors keep on picking him? Other batsman would of been dropped by now but because he is an all-rounder he seems to be a 'protected species'. This is odd considering there are other capable and younger all-rounders out there like James Faulkner (once he is fit), Moises Henriques and Mitch Marsh.

If the selectors are so desperate to keep Shane Watson in this team he needs to bat at number 6, so we won't keep losing an early wicket when he is batting at number 3 in the first innings. Phil Hughes then could move up to number 3 in the batting order which he would be more suited to than number 6. Hughes was unlucky to get dropped in the Ashes series in England because of his great innings batting with Ashton Agar. To his credit though he has went back to Sheffield Shield and dominated in the competition by making big hundreds. He has also done well in South Africa in the past and is experienced in the conditions. That is also why I believe he should be ahead of Alex Doolan in selection.

McDonald at least offered economy, Henriques won't offer too much with the ball. Losing Faulkner certainly hurt if they were thinking that. By the sounds of it Pattinson is going real well in the practice game and Bird looked good in the Big Bash so if we were going 4 quicks one of them would be the ideal.

No doubt he'll be in the team. Given his conversion rate, 6 definitely would be more his spot and his style really suits it.

Probably a better approach with Patto/Bird as your 4th quick, I just had McDonald on the brain AND the selection of Glenn Maxwell in India where Australia played 3 bowlers, plus Maxwell, Henriques and Watson. Didn't work there - Australia got rissoled twice...:( Maxwell got 4 wickets, just so happened India were already 200 in front by that stage! Not worth very much in other words... Just warning fans that the extra batter is an option so they don't rage too much if it happens :p Although apparently Henriques bowled pretty well in the nets vs Clarke the other day. Dark horse perhaps.

As for Watson, A) if he can't bowl he hasn't been picked. The only time he's been picked as a batsmn only was India last year. Otherwise he has bowled in 47 of his 51 Tests, and B) he's always been better in the 2nd innings than the first. Look up his record in all forms and you'll see he always does better chasing etc. I think bowling on a pitch helps him bat on it, if that makes sense. As for his spot, I personally would hate for Watson to be moved now, when he's finally shown the odd spark or two at #3 . Especially for Doolan who is basically Watson v2.0, with the same foibles ie. can't convert, plays across his front pad a lot.

And if Hughes is going to play there is merit in putting him down at 6, otherwise you would have a run of Clarke, Smith, Watson, Haddin - all right handers. Given Peterson spins away from them, he would fancy his chances of capitalising on overconfidence from the Aussie right handers - all of who've been known to push a bit too hard vs spin on occasion.

A lot of that is putting facts to my view though, I will totally acknowledge that Hughes at 3 and Watson at 6 wouldn't be bad at all.

Hughes top scored in the inter-squad game they had yesterday too :thumbs Made 83. Next best score was Watson with 34.

We sure go through strange phases, first too many lefties now too many righties (latter pretty common though).

Can never fault Hughes ability to get his spot back, always performs at Shield and in the warm ups. I just hope the selectors stop mucking him around, if he has a Marsh like failure then I can understand him being dropped but if he does something similar to his last series then he should be stuck with.

Don't need to worry about Henriques playing as a bowler, he'll be taking Watson spot now.

I don't wish injury on any player but Shane Watson getting injured might help us more than it will hurt us. Moises Henriques should be a certainty for the number 6 position in the batting order. He is not a bad all-rounder by any means and this will be a good chance for him to show what he is made of against the best Test team in the world. Hopefully the 83 runs Phil Hughes scored in the practice match will be enough for him to secure the number 3 batting position in the team. I am still confident of either Phil Hughes or Alex Doolan preforming better than Shane Watson at number 3 in any case.

I too hope Hughes can make it in to the team, however if he does he must succeed for the sake of his career. If he doesn't succeed I can't see the selectors putting faith in him for another couple years, because whether we agree or not in their eyes they will think they have given him multiple opportunities, all which he has blundered in one way or another. At this stage though it looks like Doolan may make it in, which is a shame. His technique may be fantastic but that means very little if he doesn't know how to use it. Same problem Shaun Marsh has. At least Hughes has the fight and passion to perform. I'm not so sure about Doolan.

I don't rate Moises Henriques. Despite his talent and potential he consistently underperforms. We don't have any other real options to replace Watson though do we.

I don't expect to see Patto or Bird in, but it's good to see we've got very capable back up.

This series will be a really interesting one. The first test will reveal a lot about how it will pan out.
