Blast to the Past - 1st ODI Australia v England, celebrating 40 years

Haddin seemed to look lost when he wasn't facing the amount of balls he would of liked. Watson took most of the strike at the start of the innings, while Haddin wanted a piece of the action, but never got the chance to play the big shot.

Although England scored fluently throughout, the rate was almost flat through the last 30 overs. There were some good overs, but largely thanks to their lack of wickets in hand, they didn't build up to a big crescendo. A team with wickets to spare could well score 30-40 more runs in the last 10, so Australia just need to keep the run rate around 5.

Well played Watson, finally breaks his 100 duck this season and first ODI 100. He loves this ground, maiden Test 100 and now this.

What a innings by Watto, starting to tee off here. Someone suggested a magical 200, if he keeps going like this he's a chance.

haha how good is the crowd. Every time there is a dot ball, they boo! They want more action, i think Watson will start hitting big now, he has done he's job, he has made the 100, why not start taking some more risks, we do have 9 wickets in hand.

English imploding there, double overthrows haven't seen that before! Finally Clarke looks for a big shot.

I think Strauss is losing it as captain, he's chopped and changed the bowling about too much. Brought on the spinners, they both had tidy early overs, then he brings back seamers and then goes back to spinners, then goes.................

At this rate he'll have spinners bowling at the death, both Swann and Yardy have bowled tidily enough and when he brought Swann back he got the only wicket. Both are going at only around the 4rpo mark, Tremlett's going at 5.5rpo, Bresnan 6rpo and Shahzad 4.5rpo, so what does Strauss do? Bring on a part-timer in Trott....................

Those calling for collywobbles' exclusion have got their way, not necessarily on here but it was a popular cry on 606 (BBC), and he's a decent 6th bowler. The likes of Trott, Pietersen and Bell can all bowl, but not as well as collywobbles.

and what angryx2 said is pretty much it, England lost too many wickets early on (186/5) so didn't have the wickets nor lower order strength to make the necessary acceleration.

ENGLAND

10 overs : 70/0 (7.00 rpo)
20 overs : 129/2 (6.45 rpo)
30 overs : 174/3 (5.80 rpo)
40 overs : 236/6 (5.90 rpo)
50 overs : 294 (5.88 rpo)

England lost their 4th wicket (Bell) on 178/4 off the 1st ball of the 31st over, Morgan was the 5th wicket after 32.5 overs at 186/5 and when Yardy fell in the 40th over that left Bresnan, Swann, Shahzad and Tremlett to bat with Pietersen who fell in the powerplay/44th over at 257/7. As angryx2 said, England just progressed without any real acceleration for the last 30 overs.

AUSTRALIA

10 overs : 62/0 (6.20 rpo)
20 overs : 111/1 (5.55 rpo)
30 overs : 153/1 (5.10 rpo)
40 overs :
50 overs :

The aussies have slowed a little, but the rule of thumb of doubling a score after 20 overs puts them ahead of the game with wickets in hand. England may have been 21 runs better off after 30 overs, but the aussies have wickets in hand and unless they lose a clutch of wickets then they're now ahead

36 overs : Australia 195/1
36 overs : England 212/5

You'd trade off 17 runs for four wickets any time and every time, it's not as if England made a big acceleration at the end so unless a miracle happens the aussies will stroll this
