Blast to the Past - 1st ODI Australia v England, celebrating 40 years

Bollinger was alright in his last stint. He doesn't look like a shorter form bowler but as he showed in the IPL he can be brilliant on song and his current ODI record backs that up. Just doesn't seem to have that pace that made him successful.

This will be a good test of our batting lineup, we have struggled to chase these down.

Prediction: Watson to get 50 and out.

With out dodgy middle order of Clarke and out of form White and D.Hussey i expect another saving innings from M.Hussey.

Bollinger bowled a good line to left handers, but it was too short. Against right handers, it was a short pitched explosion. I think he was probably doing a job for the team, because he is the biggest of them and some of the batsmen can get out that way.

Lee was a bit lucky with Davies who didn't get after him and gave him good figures while everyone else copped it. There was a bit of swing early, but a lot of loose ones that he got away with. Still, it seems odd that he didn't bowl 10.

I guess Hussey works as a bowler against England because they aren't satisfied with going at 6-7 runs an over even in an ODI. However, Smith didn't get nearly so much love for his spell of 3 tidy overs.

Although he bowled a lot of crap, I don't think Johnson was used too well. He doesn't bowl enough yorkers or surprising slower balls to be a death bowler and I would have sooner seen Watson on. You also want to match him up to right handers as often as possible, which I suppose is why he bowled at the right-hander-rich tail, but he missed out on Bell entirely.

England probably could have scored more, but so they should have with the missed chances they got. 295 does leave the game open, but it will still be a tough chase. Australia will need to show more discipline than England did with the bat and England more discipline than Australia showed in the field.

Watson on fire, hit a 4 every over so far and that has taken the pressure off scoring a run a ball. He hasn't even been slogging, just been beautiful cricket shots.

Not really a surprise to me that England get off to a flier, then get pegged back by 2-3 wickets around the 100 mark. The England tail looks long and thin, Yardy only averages 16.27 in ODIs now and that's with the aid of SIX not outs in 17 innings. He's like Wright, but in for his bowling more than batting. But to bat at seven he needs to produce more innings of note, not the one fifty and nothing else higher than 20 that he's returned so far.

He has bowled in every ODI so far, but despite bowling at least four overs in every ODI to date, he still doesn't bowl out that often or indeed nine overs for that matter

0-3 overs (0 ODIs) : n/a
4-7 overs (9 ODIs) : 49 overs, 3 wkts @ 78.67 (SR 98.00, ER 4.82)
8-10 overs (10 ODIs) : 93 overs, 11 wkts @ 34.45 (SR 53.45, ER 3.87)

Those figures against 8-10 overs do include 3/41 off 10 overs against Scotland and 3/24 off 10 overs against Pakistan. Against the aussies before this ODI he has taken 2/203 off 52 overs @ 101.50 with a good ER (3.90) but awful SR (156.00) If we're going to include a second spinner then perhaps it should be a more wicket taking spinner.

aussies off to a good start, but then so were England. Like England's lower order, a 'tail' of Smith, Johnson, Doherty, Lee and Bollinger is long and thin looking. Gotta love the BBC, they put in initials of players when there is only one in the side or country, but when there's two Hussey's they don't bother to differentiate as to which one bowled! :rolleyes (or took catches, or indeed seem to have noticed they put 'Hussey' in twice)

Australian openers have done well here. Good run rate, keeping up with the target. I will put money on Watson making 100

Watson passed the dreaded 50s, that's one check for him. Haddin needs to stand still, hes easy meat when he moves to the on side.

Agree with the commentators, should have left on the spinners this is the pitch for them and we always struggle to score quick against the.

Did he bring them on just for the PP overs? Insecure move and he payed the price.

Haddin just never looked in for those big shots. Solid innings but the usual Haddin way of getting out.
