Draft time: World Cup history - ALL FINISHED!!

The second W is mine

Waqar Younis

One of the finest bowlers ever produced on earth, He was the king of late inswings and scorching yorkers. He had every weapon in his armory, all of them the lethal ones. Stumps flying all over used to be his favourite site and so was ours. Those yorkers were always the nightmare for batsmen all over the world.

Justifying his success were the marvellous stats of his. He was the true strike bowler, having the best strike rate among all the bowlers with over 200 wickets.

He only bettered his excellence in world cup with 22 wickets in 13 matches at an astonishing average of 21 with an even more excellent SR of 25.4 (the best by any pakistani). His economy was also a good one.

Matches : 13
Maidens : 8
Runs : 466

You never said anything about pace before did you ;)

I thought it was implied since I was talking about Akram and Davidson :p

By the way, why all the genuine quick bowlers are right handed? I'm talking about express pace. Brett lee, Shoaib Akthar, Shaun Tait,Lawson, Holdings etc. all are right handed. I think Akram and Mitchell are the quickest left arm bowlers i can think. Can anyone confirm this:spy

I can't confirm it, but the reason is that pure express bowlers (bond, lee, akhtar etc) are pretty rare to find. Combine this with the fact that there haven't been many left arm seamers in the game.

Nice choices with Rameez and Waqar. I'm amazed two of my first pick choices are still avaliable - hurry up User!

Shoaib Akhtar

If you were scared seeing Bond early on, think again. Because, Rawalpindi express will scare you even more. An average of 23.81 plus the strike-rate of 27.7 during the World Cup matches, to go along with sheer pace make Shoaib Akhtar a lethal weapon. Jealous at my pace attack?

Naah... My attack would rely on spin and reverse swing. Remember this WC is in Subcontinental pitches ;)

A glaring omission of somebody from the picks so far. I thought he would be the second or third pick...

Thanks, but I'm really reluctant to do it because I'm a lot confused who to pick considering I am going to be the first one to pick in Srilankan round.
A lot confused over 3 players.

Ah yes, the fun of thinking ahead. It can bend your brain actually. I like Waqar, but his economy rate of 5 RPO put me off a bit. Although his excellent strike rate is always attractive :thumbs

That's pretty right. Dirk Nannes is probably the fasted leftie I can think of. Johnson and Akram could get it up to that 150KPH/90+MPH if their rhythm was good, but Nannes is often around there.

Zaheer Abbas

The man known as the Asian Bradman, Zaheer Abbas is my Pakistan choice. He was a classy player, with many of his peers considering his timing to have been the best they've ever seen.

In his 2nd match in the inagural world cup - the thriller against favourites WI, he scored a crucial 31 after Pak lost their 1st wicket quite early. Just to give this innings some context - Sir Viv Richards scored 13 in this game. Having got the confidence in his ability, he followed this with a match-winnig 97 against Sri Lanka at an unheard strike rate of 109.98!!

He had a quiet WC during 1979 - until Pak came up against defending champions WI in the semis. Chasing a mammoth total of 293, Pak needed someone to anchor the innings - and Zaheer did - with an impressive 93 at a decent strike-rate of 76.22. Unfortunately, Pak had a dramatic collapse after he fell and were all-out for 250. Just for comparison sake again, he once again out-scored Sir Viv Richards, who scored 41 @ a lower strike of 67.

The 1983 WC was again a good one for Zaheer - recording scores of 82, 0, 83*, 15, 0 and his only ton in WC - 103* against NZ. He was a crucial member in assuring Pak once again reach the semis and again, it was against defending champs WI. Pak batted first, and again collapsed. Unfortunatley, Zaheer couldn't save them face this time as he was out on 30 and Pak collapsed to 184. Easy victory for WI. Again, for comparison sake, Sir Viv Richards won the battle in this match - putting in a match-winning performance of 80* at a brutal SR of 83.

Having been Pak's most premier batsman in the 70's, and being one of the most destructive batsman in ODI's of his generation, Zaheer Abbas makes my XI with final WC stats of:

Matches: 14
Not-outs: 2
Runs 597
Average: 49.75
Strike Rate: 78.34
Hundereds: 1 Fifties: 4

Papa Smurf's WC XI:

1)
2)
3)
4) Z Abbas
5)
6)
7)
8)
9)
10) D Patel
11)

Oh yeah, definitley looking sexy :D

Same views here, but he was better than Akhtar in ER and has the best SR that caught my eye. I just couldn't put him away just because of his awesome average and SR. And TBH, he was one of the bowlers I always liked to watch, more exciting than Akram. I loved the sights of stump's flying in the air.:D

Agreed.

Come on Riz, its your turn now, then we can start Srilanka round. Akshay is already here, then its me:wave

----------

Anyway, we could start the next round already, it wont affect the riz's pick as he is last in pakistan round, so even if Akshay and me pick our players he wont be affected...
What do you guys think??? Yes or no?

haha, can you get any better one, No.

Mutthiah Murlidharan
You want spinner, here I am and I'm the best in the world.
782712_f496.jpg

Undoubtedly the best spinner in the world(sorry to disappoint those Warne fans, he is the best spinner in the world in my books). And for sure he is the best spinner in the world cup even for those Warne fans.
You just don't have words about how awesome he is, he turns the ball by a mile and his doosras are the most lethal.

Just see the records, and I won't need to say anything else:
Matches : 31
Maidens : 14
Wickets : 53
BBI : 4/19
Average : 19.69
SR : 30.4
ER : 3.83

Nearly eveything there is best among any spinners, if not then it is too close.
And over the years I have watched him play, his batting improved towards the later part of his career, he played some handy 30's there.
And one thing for sure, he was a good fielder, better than many of his fellow countrymates.
I'm pretty happy to get the best spinner in the world, and what can be better if he is actually going to play the world cup.

Thems are fighting words...:D I don't agree - I like Warney in World Cups.

But you are right, you can't go wrong with Murali :thumbs

Also like Zaheer Abbas a LOT Papa. :thumbs He doesn't get lauded enough IMHO

Sanath Jayasuriya

He started out as a left arm spin bowler who can bat. But Ranatunga trusted him and regularly promoted him.His cameos at the top of the order with Kaluwitharana were the talk of WC 96. Teams used to settle first in 30 overs and go for the kill in slog overs. He changed the rules, he took on the new ball and used the restrictions to the maximum. With 221 runs at a strike-rate of 131.54, and seven wickets at an economy-rate of 4.52, he was named the Man of the Tournament of WC96. This started a trend which is common for openers now in ODI's.
He is fourth highest run scorer in WC with 1165 runs in 38 matches with 3 hundreds at an impressive strike rate of 90.66. His canny slow bowling is specially effective on subcontinental tracks. He has 27 scalps in WC.

Sweet... My squad is turning out just as i expected.... You can guess who will be joining this guy at the top to form an explosive partnership.(A hint-they would have almost 900 ODI games between them :p)

----------

I guess i dont need a allrounder now as Styris and Sanath can bowl 10 overs between them easily. So i need 3 bowlers, 4 batsmen and a WK.:spy
