Draft time: World Cup history - ALL FINISHED!!

Great pick. I think Jayasuriya has been the Sri Lankans best World Cup player.

So you're up Zorax, and riz can pick a Pakistani when he gets here.

Also like Zaheer Abbas a LOT Papa. :thumbs He doesn't get lauded enough IMHO

Agree entirely - his stats don't do him justice, hence the mammoth of an explanation.

Obvious picks of Sanath and Murali - 2 of the biggest reasons why SL were almost un-beaten during the 96 WC.

----------

Sweet... My squad is turning out just as i expected.... You can guess who will be joining this guy at the top to form an explosive partnership.(A hint-they would have almost 900 ODI games between them :p)

The ideal OD opening combination in my opinion. One of the main reasons why I followed the first IPL to some degree - too bad they failed miserably for the Mumbai Indians :p

They came good in one game where they scored 110 in 10 overs. Sachin hooked Ishant Brutally and was really going after Mendis too.

I expected that, I was really confused over Jayasuriya and Murali TBH.
I was going for Jayasuriya but his batting ave, bowling ave, ER put me off.

Though I'm more happy with my pick.

guys wait up, far out i had to wait 3 days and you guys couldn't wait 2 hours :facepalm:p my pakistan pick is coming up shortly... pretty obvious one too.

Javed Miandad

The only man to have played the first six world cups (the only player to play in 6 world cups) and he comes in at six in the all time highest run scorers in world cups at a 1083 runs in 30 innings at an average of 43.32. He has made all of his 8 centuries at world cups and although you might think that they aren't enough you have to remember he almost always came in at 5-6 throughout his career.

He ended up scoring 7381 runs in 218 innings at an average of 41.70 with 8 centuries and a whopping 50 half-centuries. His stats would've looked alot better if he had had a better 1996 world cup where his scores were abysmal.

Yep Javed's the man I was thinking needed to be chosen. Excellent grab, before someone in round 11 could snatch him. That's a very good middle order pairing you've got now.

And don't worry about the vultures who want every pick made in 10 minutes :p

Javed should have been the first of the batsmen to be chosen imo. His average would obviously be a little lower because he's played so many World Cup games but that's only the law of averages kicking in, not a reflection of his inferior ability.

Come on Zorax you are holding up in every round :facepalm

Well I apologize for having a life outside of PC...

Actually, I don't. Anyways my pick is:

Chaminda Vaas

Matches Played: 31
Wickets Taken: 49
Average: 21.22
Economy Rate: 3.97
Runs Scored: 219
Average: 21.9
Strike Rate: 73.98

Left arm seamer and handy lower order batsman, Vaas is another WC veteran (having taken part in 4) who raised his game on the biggest stage. His economy, average and batting average are all better than his career figures (4.18, 27.5 and 13.68 respectively). He's the 4th leading wicket taker in World Cups, with 49 victims, at a terrific economy and average. His 6/25 against Bangladesh is still one of the best bowling performances in WCs of all time, with the remarkable feat of a Hattrick off the first 3 balls of the game.

Probing and accurate with the ball, with the ability to move it both ways in the air and off the seam, Vaas is arguably the best new-ball bowler Sri Lanka have ever produced, possibly the best fast bowler they have ever produced. He is also know for his hard-hitting lower order ability, although a strike rate of just under 74 doesn't really show it (it's still higher than his career figure of 72.5 tho, oddly enough.)

Zorax's World Cup XI
Saeed Anwar (Pak '96, '99 and '03) (915 runs @ 53.82)
Chaminda Vaas (SL '96, '99, '03 and '07) (49 wickets at 21.22, 219 runs at 21.)
Sir Richard Hadlee (NZ, '75 '79 and '83) (22 wickets @ 19.13, 149 runs @ 16.55)

Aravinda de Silva

YES! The player I was particularly targetting this round, right where I wanted him.

Who is Aravinda de Silva? A short middle order batsmen who at the mention of his name, Ian Healy starts to shiver. Why? Because Aravinda played one of the great World Cup innings in the 1996 final. Sri Lanka were chasing 242 and Aravinda came in at 2/23, and crushed the dreams of the legendary Aussie attack a masterful 107* and was the obvious Man of the Match after he'd taking 3 wickets in the first innings. Only a couple of days earlier he had been Man of the Match in the semi-final v India too, after igniting the SL innings which was struggling at 2/1 and 3/35. Aravinda counter-attacked with 66 from just 47 balls.

He'll also be remembered for his tight bowling in the 2003 semi final against Australia where he took 2/36 off his 10 overs. The most memorable thing was not the figures so much, but when Adam Gilchrist walked after being initially given not out from Aravinda's bowling.

World Cup Stats:
Matches: 35
Runs: 1064
Average: 36.68
S/R: 86.57
HS: 145 (115 balls) v Kenya, 1996
Wickets: 16
Average: 41.93
Economy: 4.97
4 Man of the Match awards: 91(86) v Zim, 1996; 145(115) v Kenya, 1996; 66(47) & 1/3(2 overs) v India, Semi Final, 1996; 107*(124) & 3/42(9) v Australia, Final, 1996.

Looking at those 4 MOMs from 1996, it was a bit of a surprise Jayasuriya got the Player of the Tournament really.

Aravinda's going to anchor my middle order, batting at either #4 or #5 and has the ability to be my 6th bowler with his smart off spinners, which will balance my team nicely.

^ Terrific player, was hoping he was left till my chance comes but he's too good to be ignored by others :p Really instrumental in Sri Lanka's success in the 96 World cup.

Bleh.. I'll have to pick last all the best would go by then :facepalm

Come on Zorax you are holding up in every round :facepalm

Hmm, yes I think so. Please try and be a little quicker Zorax. You have 24hrs yes, but I'd rather that you didn't use it all. Must be that life that you don't have :lol :cheers

Shravi I know you mentioned you couldn't do 12hrs, but would anyone have a problem with 18hrs instead of 24? If no one has a problem I think we should switch to 18hrs for the Australia round onwards, just to keep things moving a little better. Remember too, that you don't lose your pick after the time limit, it's just the deadline when the people behind you can start picking.

And Gazza, I appreciate the endorsement of my Abdul Qadir pick :thumbs

Yeah, I'm fine with 18 hours :) Might struggle with it tomorrow though, so if my turn comes up tomorrow, the guy after me can post his pick if I'm not on :thumbs

I've got a question - what happens once all 10 teams have been selected?
