Michael Holding: A fine knock from VVS Laxman to get his team back in this game. Well played.

laxman505we.jpg

Michael Atherton: Absolutely, Mikey. A fine innings from a fine cricketer. He has looked solid out there and deserves this half century. Although the job is still only half done. Can he put India on top in this game by converting this into a big score?

Michael Holding: Well, that only time will tell. But if he continues playing this way, I wouldnt bet against it.

Michael Atherton: And, just as this partnership was begining to look dangerous for England, they have got the breakthrough through Simon Jones, and its the wicket of the Indian captain, Rahul Dravid.

dravdis10wg.jpg

Michael Holding: Yeah, another poor shot, although Dravid was trying to exploit that open leg side, but only managed to find Monty Panesar at square leg, who in the end takes a simple catch.

dravdis29ki.gif

Michael Atherton: Yeah you heard that right, Monty Panesar has actually taken a catch! And what a return for Simon Jones, after being out for months due to injury.

FOW: India 119-3

The key man is gone!!! This is the time where England can utilise now... Good to see Panesar taking a catch as he is not that gud in fielding!!!

The Wall is gone ...might be some trouble for India ...good to see Monty Panesar taking a catch :D

Michael Atherton: England have struck double again, as Simon Jones picks up his second wicket of the innings, dismissing the dangerman, VVS Laxman, for exactly fifty.

laxmandis15ik.jpg

Michael Holding: Now that is clever bowling from Jones. He had just asked Cook to move in closer. Then he followed that with a delivery in that area where Laxman likes to drive, thereby forcing him to play the shot, and hitting the jackpot as Laxman in the end gives Cook a straightforward catch. Great tactics and perfectly executed by Simon Jones and England.

laxmandis21vz.gif

Michael Atherton: A fine innings nevertheless from Laxman. Came in with the score at 21-2, and he along with Dravid pulled the team out of that mess. However I am sure he was looking for a bigger score to put India right on top in this game.
Now with both Dravid and Laxman out in quick succession, the pendulum has swung back England's way.

FOW: India 120-4

Laxman and Dravid... what a great partners, i think Laxman went to pavilion becos he misses Dravid there!!!:D

But India in deep trouble with two new batsmen at the crease..Its never going to be easy to settle... Good return by Jones!!!

Kaif out for a duck

Michael Holding: And India have lost another wicket, their third in rapid succession. Mohammad Kaif is the man dismissed, out caught by Simon Jones, would you believe, at forward short leg, and off the bowling of Hoggard.

kaifdis26rd.jpg

Michael Atherton: Yeah, good attacking cricket from England to put Kaif under a lot of pressure, and this paid off in the end for Michael Vaughan and Matthew Hoggard. Simon Jones does well in his new and rather surprising fielding position. These catches are always hard to take.

kaifdis4ng.jpg

Michael Atherton: So Hoggard picks up his second wicket of the innings, and continues to cause problems for the batsmen. India are now in deep trouble.

FOW: India 127-5

David Gower: Welcome back to the studio as the players take their much deserved tea break on this first day of the first npower test match between England and India, here at Lord's. India currently are 179 for the loss of five wickets. This current partnership between Yuvraj Singh and Mahendra Dhoni is worth 52 runs. But England will definately be happy with proceedings, wont they Ian?

Ian Botham: Very happy. If you had given them the option of having the top five Indian batsmen back in the pavillion by tea time on the first day, and on this good batting wicket, I am sure all of them would have taken it. But I think, most people, including Michael Atherton who did the pitch report in the morning, is neglecting the overcast conditions here. Yes it is a fine wicket for batting with the ball coming to the bat at a comfortable height, but the movement of the ball also matters, and that is something the England bowlers, especially Matthew Hoggard have managed to make good use of. The conditions are still perfect for the ball to swing and seam around, and that is what has been causing the batsmen problems. We've blamed Ganguly, Dravid and Laxman for poor shot selection, but I think they were all unsure about how much the ball was going to swing, thereby forcing them to play at the deliveries.

tea3zr.jpg

David Gower: Yes I was thinking the same too. But then conditions are expected to remain like this for the next five days, which is basically for the entire test match.

Nasser Hussain: Well if it goes like this, I doubt we'll need full five days. Infact I expect the wicket itself to become harder for batting from day 3 onwards, so India could still consider themselves lucky to have avoided batting last here.

David Gower: Well lets now have a look at the scorecards. Starting with India's batting. Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh are to two men unbeaten, with the former looking in very aggressive mood. Both players having hit one six each, mind you. Earlier on Laxman and Dravid were dismissed for scores of 50 and 43 respectively. Kaif failed to trouble the scorers.

Simon Jones was England's best bowler in that session getting rid off both Dravid and Laxman. Hoggard picked up his second wicket by dismissing Mohammad Kaif.

Although they are playing way too aggressive. Dhoni actually skied the ball once already and was lucky that it dint fall into the hands of one of my fielders.

David Gower: Welcome back. Now lets have a look at the individual stats of the Indian batsmen starting with ofcourse the only half centurion in the innings, VVS Laxman.

lax10bf.jpg

Ian Botham: Was looking very good in the middle, and the least troubled I thought against the moving and seaming deliveries. His stance somewhat allows him to adjust or rather handle a great degree of swing. As you can see from his stats, three boundaries coming from the on drive. And it was his tendency to play any delivery that is in that straight drive length, that cost him his wicket. Good field tactics from England, and excellent bowling by Jones in that case.

lax21ov.jpg

lax35tx.jpg

David Gower: Another man who also looking good at that stage was Rahul Dravid, even though he missed out on his fifty.

drav17ms.jpg

Nasser Hussain: Well he did have some trouble facing Hoggard and Simon Jones I thought, and that delivery which eventually got him was because of that. But he did play well, straight and solid as usual, and and pretty much scored runs all over the ground. This is a clear indication of his vast variety of strokes. And whats even good about them is that they seem to be near perfect, if not totally perfect. Or in other words, simply flawless. If it hadnt been for the overcast conditions, Dravid would have probably scored a hundred on this wicket.

drav29fo.jpg

drav32xe.jpg

David Gower: Well their partnership was broken, after which came Mohammad Kaif, lasting just two deliveries in the middle.

Nasser Hussain: His first shot was nice looking leave, but his second one was a half hearted front foot defence, dint look at the ball moving into him, ended up getting the inside edge of the bat, and straight into the hands of Simon Jones at forward short leg.

yuv14of.jpg

dho14hh.jpg

David Gower: Since then however Mahendra Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh have gone on and put up a 52 run partnership. Both are still unbeaten, and seem to be in a very aggressive mood, especially Dhoni.

yuv27pz.jpg

yuv30rn.jpg

Ian Botham: Well attack is the best form of defence according to some players. Andrew Flintoff, Adam Gilchrist all like to play their shots, no matter what the situation, and from the looks of it Dhoni and Yuvraj believe they need to put the opposition bowlers under pressure, and the best way to do that is by scoring boundaries. It is a risk no doubt, but so far it has worked.

dho22xi.jpg

David Gower: Yeah and as we can see from their spiders, both have scored most of the runs on the leg side. And England have continued to have fewer fielders there. What do you think Vaughan is trying to do?

dho34eo.jpg

Ian Botham: Well I think he expects both batsmen to find it easier to score on the offside than on the onside. And that single fielder at square leg did get him the wicket of Rahul Dravid, so who knows, it might actually work again.

David Gower: Moving on to the England bowlers, well the man who got the breakthrough was indeed Simon Jones. And I think his pace, swing and seam are a bit too much to handle for the batsmen.

Ian Botham: To be very honest I thought Hoggard was England's best bowler. But yeah, Simon Jones bowled well too. But credit must also go to Michael Vaughan and his field settings, as both Dravid's and Laxman's dismissals were due to fielders being at the right place. Simon did get the deliveries spot on though in terms of the line and the length.

jones15ny.jpg

But for me the best bowler so far has been Hoggard, and this can be seen from his pitchmap, wherein he has bowled the same line and length, but has confused the batsmen with his variation in swing.

hoggy15an.jpg

Steve Harmison on the other hand has struggled a bit, after a very impressive start. Well to be honest the wicket isnt the best for bowlers, and he doesnt swing the ball much, so the overcast conditions arent really of much help to him. But I would like him to support Hoggard, Jones and Flintoff by keeping it tight.

harmi15az.jpg

Flintoff has been underused so far, bowling just eight overs. The others have done the job, so hasnt had to do much. As usual he has been hitting the deck and pitching it up to the Indian batsmen. That single maiden of his was a perfect case of ball beating the bat, everytime.

freddie12ja.jpg

Panesar has looked more threatening against the left handed Yuvraj Singh although I would like to see him bowl more from round the wicket. By doing so, he will have better chances of getting LBW decisions.

monty18is.jpg

David Gower: Ok then. Thanks a lot guys, and we'll take our final break, after which we'll have LIVE action of the final session of this first day's play between England and India from Lord's. Stay tuned.
