England in Sri Lanka

Yes, but Hoggard can swing the ball both ways as can Sidebottom, so the angles don't really change. It's the matter of having no pace in there.

Of course the angles change, one bowls with his left hand and one with his right, that's the angle! Sidebottom also bowled the fastest for us in the ODIs iirc, getting up to 87.

I personally believe both could play together, we've used Hoggy as our middle overs workhorse before. I chose Anderson as he has been very good this summer too, but as Evertonfan says, I'd hate to be Peter Moores, lots of selection (well in the bowling anyway, top 7 practically picks itself)

Can't play Hoggard if you dont give him the new-ball. He's totally uneffective. He can't bowl in the middle. He has to bowl with the very old ball and the very new ball.

Haha random but, I've got a cousin called James Anderson - I never realized that. :p

Broad won't debut will he? I'd wait til England's next summer of cricket til debuting him as it would be extremely hard for a pace bowler in his young 20's in debut on subcontient pitches.

What happened to Chris Tremlett?

Ugh. Tbh, he wasn't even half good.

I'd try Broad in for Jimmy a couple of games. A couple maybe even for SideButt.
I betcha he'd be good. He's got good temperament...when he's not being hit for 6 6's. :p

If I play him with two spinners then he has the new ball. And he can bowl in the middle.

Totally wrong statement. He's improved massively in the middle remember the wickets he got in Australia in the middle overs? He's not just a swing bowler he's a lot more skilled than that.

Tremlett was our best bowler against India in tests!

did you not see that 7fer against the Aussies?! Obviously i can appreciate if you wiped it from your memory after that horrible, horrible test match. I would take Hoggard, i just think faith should be shown in the man who's done it so many times before. Lets remember Although he was good in the ODI's sidebottom hasn't played tests out of England so we can't be too sure how he'll fair although i'd pick them both anyway. It doesn't help when you consider he's going to be giving Murali some serious help by creating rough too.

hoggard is possible the most consistently underated bowler in cricket at the moment. hes got 240 test match wickets and hes still only 30 for god sake lol, and he may be good with the new ball, but hes been very succesful in the middle overs of test matches in the last couple of years, maby at the start of his career he had trouble when he wasnt getting any help from the ball in those overs but hes developed his game so much since then i dont think he has any main faults now. My 1st pick bowler for england, even befour jimmy anderson, and thats saying something as hoggy is a yorkshireman and jimmy a lancastrian! lol

I know its a going to be difficult pick but Sidebottom has done nothing wrong so far since putting a England shirt back on and Jimmy can swing the ball and if its not swinging switch to hitting the pitch since he has the pace.

Its a shame for Hoggy but that has to be the choice in my opinion since we need the 2 spinners.

Rough will already be created by Vaas, you should never drop a bowler because he might cause rough for the opposing spinner, or should we have never played right armers vs Australia?

People keep saying about Sidebottom could struggle, it's rubbish. He's a class act, knows how to bowl and is very accurate. I woudn't even think of dropping him now.

I never said i'd drop him because of the rough it's just a contributing factor in making Hoggard a better pick. I've already said i'd pick both but people forget Hoggards contributions far too quickly after 1 summer of injury. At the end of the day Hoggys done it for years and Sidebottoms done it for a summer, i know which one i'd have.

so would you play just the 2 seamers?
i dont think england will be brave and only pick 2 seamers due to the fact that sidebottom, anderson and hoggy have all has injury problems during test matches for england, if one goes down in the first innings england would have to open the bowling in the 2nd innings with collingwood.

Dropping Sidebottom because he might create rough would show we fear Murali which is not a good thing as it will give Sri Lanka the mental edge. By playing Sidebottomo it almost shows we don't fear Muralitharan so although it may make his bowling more effective it may help mentally for us.
