England in Sri Lanka

You not seen him play of late then?

What's that got to do with it?He couldn't perform back then so why should the selectors think he can now he's had his chance and failed.

The same reason Matthew Hayden, one of Australia's most prolific openers, was given a second chance?

That was 5 years ago, since then he's scored 2,000 runs in a season, twice! Watching him play and just listening to him you can tell that at 38 he is the best he has ever been, both technically and mentally.

I'm not doubting his ability but he's 38. I just don't approve of calling him up over younger players who will be in England's long-term future.

Hayden wasn't 38 though.

I'd still rather see Shah or Bopara in there after all these two are the future of English cricket maybe not so much Shah but Bopara certainly is.

I don't give a tossing monkey's flying fig about the future. All that matters is this series right here, right now in Sri Lanka. Ramprakash would probably get into the other Test teams, barring Australia.

The only thing that bothers me about Ramp's selection is he's said it's not his burning ambition to play for England again. If its not your burning ambition then you shouldn't represent your country and perhaps that attitude is the reason he didn't really take to international cricket last time around, because he certainly has the talent.

At best he'd be a one-series wonder. We need consistency in selection and not these odd one-off call ups. Doesn't matter how good he is when he's closer to a pension than an another England cap.

I would NOT go back to man who has a record of 2 centuries in 52 tests. It's not like he was a one test wonder like Sidebottom, he had his chance, and a very good chance at that, and blew it.

Finally someone agrees with my point.

At 38? I really doubt it. He can't make England's Test team, wouldn't break though the strong middle order that India and Pakistan both possess. South Africa wouldn't pick him, and I don't think Sri Lanka would either. So really he would make the New Zealand, West Indies and Bangladesh sides, hardly a huge acheivement.

No denying he's in excellent form, but he's 38.
