Story England: The New Breed! Kev Mead Called Up and Deputises as Skipper (ICC 06)

FreddieFan happy with knock

After his 127 in the first test against Sri Lanka at Lords, FreddieFan commented to journalists that he was "delighted" with his innings.

"When you grow up as a young batsman the thing you really want is a hundred at Lords" he told our reporter after he was dismissed. "To be up on that honours board with all those great names is a dream come true."

When asked about the performance of the whole team, FreddieFan was hugely enthusiastic. "They've been magnificent. It was a great achievement by our bowlers to dismiss Sri Lanka fairly cheaply, they've got some good players like Mahela Jayawardene, and batting first they'd have been confident of a big score, but the bowling was tight and the fielding sharp, and we strangled them brilliantly."

FreddieFan was also pleased with the team's batting performance. "To score 500 you need a good team effort, and there have been some excellent contributions. Briggs and Baines got us off to a good start, which allowed me to go out and play freely, and Teague made another nice 50 at the other end."

"I said before the start of the series that I was hoping to take my chance when it came, and I have done. I've started well, and it's up to me to keep scoring runs and nail down that number 5 spot as my own."

Skipper Out and So Are England

Geraint Jones: Well England's innings has been wrapped up by Muttiah Muralitharan, as the England captain Usy Gee edged behind to Kumar Sangakkara.

Dean Jones: It's been a fantastic performance by the England batting line-up, and Fred Fan and Will Baines will be delighted with their centuries.

Skipper Strikes Before Tea

Geraint Jones: That's just what England wanted; A wicket before teh break in play, and it's teh captain who leads from the front again.

Dean Jones: Yep, it was Briggs who took a good catch at slip to dismiss Upul Tharanga after he edged an outswinger from England's captain.

Tea on Day 3

Mark Nicholas: What a time to get a wicket eh? The last over before the break and the captain removes Sri Lanka's dangerous opener, Upul Tharanga. I'm here with Dean Jones; Dean, do you think England can win this game without batting again?

Dean Jones: Well i'm not sure that England can win this with one innings, fair enough, Sri Lanka didn't bat well at all in their first innings, but they are a team of fighters and will not give up. I think England will win this match, but I also think that Sri Lanka will get a lead of about 70-100 and I fancy England to knock the runs off.

Mark Nicholas: Thanks Dean. Join us after the break for the final session of the third day here at Lords.

Teague over the moon for himself and F Fan

Teague was extatic after todays batting performance when he spoke to the press in the tea break. "That was one of the best days of my life out there today! I enjoyed every moment out there in the middle with F Fan and I was over the moon to reach a 50 on debut.Me and F Fan kept saying we would take the bowlers on and thats exactly what we did and I have to say it was a pleasure batting with him! He deserved the 127 he got and i'm sure he will have a very long and successful career!"

Teague also stated he was glad to be part of this fabulous new England squad and wanted to get a few wickets in the Sri Lankan second innings.

Davies called up to the England squad

New young star Nic Davies has been called up to the England squad.
"I am delighted! I have never imagined being called up to play for my country! I am so happy!" The young Off Spinning all rounder had a brilliant season last year taking over 80 wickets with the ball and scoring over 800 runs with the bat.
"I would just like to thank Matthew Roberts for putting faith in me. I knew he would as he appreciates young players." The newly called up player is preparing to leave for the England training camp and should arrive there by tomorrow.

Captain Gone For a Duck

Mike Haysman: Sri Lanka's highest scorer in the first innings has perished for a duck second time around, as he was LBW to Lee Payne.

Geoffrey Boycott: What a good ball it was by the youngster too; It was fast, straight and nipped back into Jayawardene's pad.

Sangakkara Goes as England Dominate

Geraint Jones: Well, perhaps England can win this game without batting again Dean; The captain strikes again and Kumar Sangakkara loses his off-stump.

Dean Jones: It was another beautiful delivery from Gee as Kumar Sangakkara continues his miserable batting form.

2 in 2 For The England Captain

Geraint Jones: Ecstatic scenes here at Lords as England captain Usy Gee bowled Tilakeratne Dilshan first ball, with an absolute corker of a delivery.

Dean Jones: Sadly though, there was no hat-trick for him as Michael Vandort blocked the hat-trick ball, but England are still well on top in this game.

Ahmed Strikes With His First Ball

Geraint Jones: Brilliant bowling from England here as they have taken the 5th Sri Lankan wicket. Zohaib Ahmed was brought into the attack and he clean bowled Thilan Samaraweera with his first ball.

Dean Jones: Well how many bowlers would bowl a 92mph yorker first up? Because that is exactly what Ahmed did, and England could wrap this match up tonight.
