Ahmed Strikes Again

Mike Haysman: This is unbelievably good bowling from England as Zohaib Ahmed strikes again.

Geoffrey Boycott: There is shades of Jamaica 2004 about this bowling performance isn't there? Ahmed produces another corker, and Johan Mubarak is bowled neck and crop.

Mubarak becomes the latest Sri Lankan to join the collapse.

J Mubarak: b Ahmed 4

Sri Lanka: 42/6

Davie Joins The Party

Mike Haysman: It gets better and better for the England team as spinner Drew Davie joins in with the wickets.

Geoffrey Boycott: Throughout the match, Davie has turned the ball and he has troubled batsman a lot, and in the end, he was too good for Michael Vandort as he edges to Shaun Briggs at slip.

As easy as that; Briggs takes a simple catch at slip.

M Vandort: c Briggs b Davie 8

Sri Lanka: 54/7

Mike Haysman: The processison continues for Sri Lanka as they now lose their 8th wicket.

Hello and welcome to CricNews once again, I say it every night but lets delve straight into the cricket.

Fred Fan and J.Teague walked out this morning looking dangerously focused, and for the Sri Lankans they must have known a 500+ score was going to be something which couldn?t be side stepped. Fan and Teague are well known for there eccentric shots and there were many of them today in each innings and it paid off. The lower end of the England batting line up really didn?t have to put many runs on the board or stay in as the middle order really did the damage. I?m sure Matt Roberts told his tail enders to enjoy the knock about as times like that are rare, it gave the lads a chance to hit a few into the crowd. England walked off with 524, which looks too many for this Sri Lankan side to get a good lead over.

Sri Lanka?s first innings was abysmal, but compared to there second it was world class. The captain had the two openers back in the pavilion without much trouble, a brief 15 from Sangakkara and 4 from Tharanga. Payne and Ahmed had Jayawardene(0) and Samaraweera(6) packing very quickly and it was 25/4, Sri Lanka had heads down, and it needed something special to pick them back up. Dilshan came in and went straight back, a duck from him and another wicket from the leader, Usy. Vandort looked to be digging in and made 8 from 45 but everything fell apart around him and finally so did he, he succumb to a masterful spin bowl from Davie. Mubarak made 4 off 12 balls but nothing was going Sri Lanka?s way and Ahmed bagged another. Kapugedera fell for 6 to another tearing ball from Davie. Vaas also scored 6 but was c&b by a world class player, Usy Gee. Kulasekara made 8 and fell to the captain, which brought up his 5 for, and his first while captaining the team. Muralitheran was left in unbeaten on 1*, and Sri Lanka failed to even make 71 runs, which meant that England had won by an Innings and 177 runs.

We caught up with Matthew Roberts for a quick chat and asked him how he felt,

?Well me and my team were talking about having a 100% record for this series and the lads knew that we wanted this win, so they really went out there with Usy and stuck it into this Sri Lanka side, to bundle out a team from less that 120 in test cricket is amazing but to bundle them out only 16 runs over a half century is world class. Id like to thank all the lads both bat and ball players really stepped up and helped, and it all came together, like I said yesterday, in cricket age means nothing, when you take 2 wickets in a match of this calibre you are old enough, same as scoring a century.?

We also caught up with Usy,

?Yeah I found that the lads really wanted to do this not just for me but for Matt, we really like the guy and I think it shines through, I?m really happy and onto the next test we will take on 120% confidence.?

Jayawardene gave a few words,

?The lads had there heads down for the whole second innings after England demolished our bowlers, so in hindsight, I would have probably seen this coming, but crickets a funny game, and things like this can happen, we will have to take a look at the lads in training and decide next week ahead of the second test.?

Will Baines picks up his first MOM in the international stage, well done to him, and I?m sure he will be rubbing the lads faces in it all week, but that?s what its for, if there was 11 of these cheques im sure the lads would all get one as each imputed something.

Crouch fails to impress as Lions smash Jakedalli!

Takes 1/30 and doesn't bat as Lions charge home by 8 wickets

-Reuters
Ryan Crouch failed to impress with the ball and didn't bat as the Lions beat Jakedalli by 8 wickets in a league match here in the Lion Stands.
In front of his home crowd, Crouch didn't strike with the new ball, but returned to pick a late wicket and return figures of 1/30 in 8 overs as Jakedalli were skittled for 195 in 46 overs. He then wasn't required to bat as the top order made short work of the target, chasing it down in 31.2 overs.
"I felt I bowled well, but a few chances went begging." said the West Indian born English Allrounder. "But I am proud of our performance, it shows that the team is well balanced with many great players"
On Englands recent thrashing of Sri Lanka, he said: "I though the lads played well, skip in particular. But Sri Lanka are a strong side and will bounce back. They must have had an off-day, but a good comprehensive victory nonetheless. They batted well and bowled well too"
Crouch is going to feature in a PC Championship match this Sunday 6th August against Treva Termites"

Baines surprised with MOM

Will Baines said he was surprised and puzzled as to why he received the MOM award after England's crushing victory over Sri Lanka. Baines, on his international debut hit 133 to give England a massive lead in their first innings. But Baines could'nt believe he had got the award, saying "It's a dream come true. To get MOM on my debut was special, but i must admit I wasn't expecting it. Other contenders for the award were captain Usy Gee, who took eight Sri Lankan wickets in the match, 5 in the 2nd innings. Also in contention was Freddie Fan, who smashed 127. Baines admitted it was a dream debut and that the most important thing was that the team won. "I can't wait for the second test, and looking to get another big score."
