Payne admits batting first is the way to go at Edgbaston
He also fears the drop

England's Lee Payne says that batting first is the way to win test matches at Edgbaston. "I enjoy putting the batsman under pressure when they are chasing." he said. "I feel I can take a wicket every ball when the cherry is new."

Payne admits that he fears he could be dropped from the second test squad after only picking up two first innings wickets on the slope at Lord's. "Two wickets could be seen as a gritty, determined performance but in a team of such quality it's not."

Crouch scalps three as Lions smash Termites
Termites collaps to 76 all out, Crouch not required to bat.

Treva's Termites were demolished here at the Termites Wood CG as a full strength TT Lions romped home by 9 wickets with over 200 deliveries to spare.
The Termites were bundled out for a record low of 76 in 27.4 agonizing overs. Crouch took 3/10 in his opening 5 over spell, and was well supported by Drayton (3/28) and Newby (3/5). The total was then knocked off in 14.5 overs, with the highest scorer of the match Cox -with 33 off 37- recieving the MOTM award.
The English - West Indian allrounder said that he was 'Not suprised' by the result, and said that he felt he could have bowled a little better. But 'a wicket is a wicket' and that this performace won't hurt his chances of being selected for the England squad before the second test against Sri Lanka.

Newley retired spin bowler Simon Barrow has had a very difficult week, but at the end of it, has come a very wierd U-turn by the allrounder.

In an interview to CricNew's Barrow said,

"Ive decided to make myself available for the tests, as i have been bowling well for Somerset in the 4 day game, and i feel really good. The main reason i want to come back after a few months absense is the fact that there isnt the same attitude to County Championships as there is to Tests. I love joining up with the guys and ive been down to all the training sessions watch, and the thing id really love is to get a recall. I had a quick word with Matt and he made it clear that if i feel good and im taking wickets and making runs, that there is always the chance of a recall for myself!"

Well this surely is a wierd week, and now its up to the England management team to see if they can have a gamble on Barrow, he has done teriffically well in County Championship games, can he transfer it to the extra day game?

Find out here on CricNews, Im Geraint Jones and i will be presenting CricNews from now on, Join us on Tuesday morning for a roundup for squads and the toss for the second test against Sri Lanka.

Good Night.

Davie Is Still Favourite

In the wake of the recent announcement of un-retirement from England spinner Simon Barrow, Matthew Roberts says that the news doesn't change his plans. He says that Drew Davie, who impressed with the ball at Lords, is still his number 1 spinner and Barrow needs to prove that he isn't washed up.

"I was impressed with Drew's performance at Lords, he showed that he can turn the ball and that he is capabable of bamboozling batsmen." said Roberts

"I don't care what Simon has achieved in the past, he has to work for his place in my side, and at the moment, he is below Davie in the pecking order"

CricNews is busy tonight. After the new England coaches shrug off of Simon Barrow, A statement has been released by Simon Barrows agent saying,

"In the recent comment made by Matt Roberts, Mr Barrow would like to stress that he believes that the comment made about him were very un-characteristic of the England coach. Mr.Barrow also says that the comment about proving he isnt a "washed-up" player, he will prove wrong and he says that it is his dream to return to the side before the Ashes."

Simon Barrow has also made comments about current frontline spinner Drew Davie saying that even though he is a world class spinner and has found his feet well, Barrow reminds him that he will be watched carefully, and in time Barrow says that Davie will be shown that Experience will always win against rare talent. Barrow looks to get back to full fitness and become Englands turn to man again, but until then, we look forward to the new Test series!

Barrow should be back and Playing

Teague spoke to press today about the recent controversy over Simon Barrow's playing future."Barrow has hit very good form for Somerset in the 4 day game and should be considered for a place in the squad!" Teague, also a Somerset All-Rounder, told press he would love to have his Somerset team mate back in the squad and that he believes he is better than Davie! "Simbazz, as we call him, is a very good mate of mine and i would love it for him to be back in the England colours! Although davie is good I believe barrow is better and should be included in the squad for the 2nd test!"

Make your mind up

English bowler Lee Payne has hit out at the controversy surrounding Simon Barrow's return to the test arena, telling him to 'make his mind up'.

"The team that won the first test should be in the second test." he said.

"You can't have someone retiring then coming back in to soak up glory when the team is doing well."

DAVIES NOT HAPPY OF BARROW RETURN

Nic Davies has to day released a statement revealing that he is "unhappy" on the return of Simon Barrow to the test squad.
"It makes competition for places a lot harder. I mean why did Matthew Roberts let him just wlatz his way back into the squad." The newly called up spin bowling all rounder is furious at this turn of events. He went on to say:
"I agree with Lee Payne's statement. And I repect Lee for making a statement on the situation." Nic returns to the England training camp in order to train hard to be considered for the second test against Sri Lanka.

Barrow Hits Back!

Simon Barrow today has released a statement to his fellow England players saying,

"The lads that have critised my decision are totally at wrong, if this kind of thing happened i would welcome the guy back to the England set up and not slate the guy for it. Ive decided to come back as im feeling good about myself and i back my abilities and i hoped the lads would to, but alot of them have voiced concerns. Compotition for places is tense but i really want to show the team i can do it and so in future if anyone wants to critise me, please dont do it in the media, and just come to me!"

Strong words from Barrow, Tomorrow is the 2nd test!

FreddieFan supports Davie Place

Much contoversy has surrounded the reversal of Simon Barrow's decision to retire from Test Cricket. FreddieFan spoke to our reporter earlier today on the subject.

Asked about whether it was right that he should be able to change his mind, Fan responded "Simon is human and makes mistakes like the rest of us. He made the wrong choice and has corrected his mistake. I see no reason why he shouldn't be part of the England set-up in the future."

"However" FreddieFan continued, "his replacement, Drew Davie, has come in and done well. He is well liked and respected in the dressing room and has a big future on the international stage. Davie should remain as fist choice spinner, and it's up to Simon to force his way back into the team as any other player would do. He can't expect the selectors to drop a promising youngster in circumstances like these."

Teague Un-Happy

Teague un-happy at the lack of thanks coming from Simon Barrows mouth concerning teague defending his decision to come back.He said "Maybe he should stay in ritirement if he acts so selfishly!"

The Simon Barrow incident continues to carry on and i'm sure it will not stop untill coach makes a statement!

Davies respects coach

Nic Davies has released a statement saying that he "respects" coach Matthew Roberts and will respect whatever decision he makes.
"He is a fantastic coach who is proving wonders with the England team. He is a great coach to work with and is teaching me new tricks with bat and ball." He went on to say "I respect his decision to put Drew Davie as the first team test spinner. Drew is a class player who I am privileged to work with."
When asked of the Simon Barrow situation, he just shrugged his shoulders and said "It's up to him what he wants to do with his career. I will respect any decision the coach puts into place." The 18 year old then went back to working extremely hard in the nets, smashing a Simon Barrow googly out of the nets.

I Call the Shots

England coach Matthew Roberts has made a statement in order to calm the flames lit by the un-retirement of Simon Barrow:

"The players need to remember who's the boss around here and that's me. I don't mean to be big-headed but i'm payed to pick the team, and that is what i'll do. I have the team who will play in the second test written down in my head, so I advise my players to concentrate on their game and not anyone elses."
