Giles picks up another

England close in on victory as Sami falls to Giles
Ashley Giles has dismissed Mohammad Sami for 2, caught behind by Jones, and that means the seventh Pakistani wicket has fallen with the score at 141.

Its only a matter of time now. The question is how much longer can the Pakistani tail survive?

Pakistan still need another 285 runs to win

Naved heads back

Harmison joins the party
Steve Harmison picked up his first wicket of the innings, when he had Naved-ul-Hasan caught spectacularly by James Anderson, in a picture-perfect diving effort.

Eight wickets down for the home side now.

Pakistan FOW 142-8

Akmal departs

Harmison picks up another
Steve Harmison picked up his second wicket of the innings, and this time he picked up the prize wicket of Kamran Akmal for 18. The Pakistani keeper went after a delivery that was pitched just outside the line of the offstump, and was never in control of the shot. In the end, all he managed to do was find the safe hands of Ian Bell at cover.

England are now one wicket away from a big win and what will be a magnificent start to their subcontinent tour.

Pakistan still need another 277 runs to win, 1 wicket remaining

Akhtar gone, England WIN!

England storm to victory
England have beaten Pakistan by a massive 276 runs in the 1st test of the 3 match series.

James Anderson picked up the last wicket, that of Shoaib Akhtar, having him out lbw for a duck. With this the young Lancashire paceman finishes with two wickets in the innings, and a total of five wickets in the match.

So apart from maybe Taufeeq Umar and Abdul Razzaq, it was another batting failure from the Pakistan.

England bowling was good, and despite Flintoff being used for just one over in this innings, they were able to bowl out the home side for just 149. James Anderson especially has had a great game overall.

Match Presentation

As you know England have gone 1-0 up in the 3 test series against Pakistan, after a comprehensive 276 run victory at Multan.

This is what the two captains and the Man of the Match had to say:

inzamam-presser13102005.jpg

Pakistan captain, Inzamam-ul-Haq
"Its been one of the most toughest games that Ive been involved in as player or captain. We got off to a good start on day 1, when we had England down to 60-4 at one stage, but after that they were pretty much in control of the game.
Now we have to review our game and work on a few things so that we can get back into this series."

England captain, Michael Vaughan
"Its a great start for us. We were confident about doing well in this tour, but to win by such a big margin in the very first game, I dont think any of us had imagined. We played well throughout, and I thought we batted well on a pitch that was misread initially. Also our bowlers did a very good job in both innings.
However its important we keep this momentum going and we expect a much harder test in the remaining two games. Pakistan are a quality side and we look forward to playing them again."

Man of the Match, Kevin Pietersen
"I am really pleased with our performance. We dominated throughout, and like I had said before we did very well to score 300 in the first innings, as the pitch dint help the batsmen at all, with a lot of deliveries rising up and quite a few of them suddenly staying low. It was very difficult to adjust to this sudden variation in bounce, and the relatively low scores in all four innings suggest that.
I am glad to have scored that hundred, and I hope I can score a few more in this series."

Well, it was just a matter of time for England to wrap this game up. Well done! Maybe Pakistan will be more difficult to beat in the next test. Good luck!

WTF?! LOL, What was Michael Vaughan looking at when that picture was taken?! Great match, good to see Geraint Jones in the runs, Good luck with your next match.

Match 2 Preview:

Confident England arrive at Faisalabad

After thrashing Pakistan by 276 runs in the first test at Multan, Michael Vaughan leads his in-form England side to Faisalabad, where the two teams lock horns again for the second test. For England, a win here will seal the series, which will be their second consecutive series win in Pakistan, after Nasser Hussain?s team won the previous series 1-0.

No injury troubles for the visitors, and only a fool would want to change a team that so comprehensively won the previous match. James Anderson?s come back to form in this tour has been big gain for this England side, especially after Simon Jones, one of the Ashes heroes, was ruled out of this tour due to injury. But Anderson has done extremely well to fill up that gap, and will want to continue that good form in the remaining two matches.

England would want to improve its batting though, especially the likes of Strauss, Trescothick and Flintoff all of whom failed to impress much in the first test. But then batting was a nightmare in that game.

Faisalabad?s Iqbal stadium is the venue for the 2nd test match, and initial reports suggest that a much faster wicket has been prepared this time around. The variable bounce and speed contributed to the batting collapses in the first test at Multan, but the groundsmen at feel that this wicket will help both bowlers and batsmen.

It is however believed that batting first and setting a good score in the first innings could be the key factor in this game, but then that?s what we had said before the Multan game.

All three Tests between Pakistan and England have been drawn - Pakistan leg-spinner Danish Kaneria made his debut in the game five years ago.

There have been two England centuries in Faisalabad Tests - by David Gower and Chris Broad - and three by Pakistan batsmen against them.

England's Ashley Giles took 5-75 at Faisalabad on the 2000 tour but having been set 244 for victory, the tourists batted out 57 overs to make 125-5.

All in all England clearly have the advantage heading into this game, after that big win at Multan, but you can never rule out a team like Pakistan.
