England have been put in to bat by Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul-Haq after he won the toss. This is a surprise, since batting first on this flat wicket would have been ideal. But maybe Inzamam has some other ideas. This is what he had to say:
"The wicket is very flat and dry, but I think if we bowl well early on and make use of the early morning moisture, we could pick up a few wickets and put England under pressure."
England captain Michael Vaughan was delighted with the decision and had this to say:
"We were definately going to bat first, as the pitch might break up towards the end, which could make it tricky for the team batting last. Also I think more runs will be scored in first half of the test match due to the absolute flat nature of this pitch."
Well now talking about the conditions, lets have a look at what we exactly have today at Multan.
And the two teams lining up for this 1st test match are:
England as expected going in with James Anderson as the third seamer.
So the players are out in the middle now and play will begin any moment
England have got off to the worst start possible, with opener Marcus Trescothick losing his wicket on the very first ball of the match. Shoaib Akhtar marks his return to the Pakistan team with a sensational delivery to have Trescothick's stumps rattled.
England captain Michael Vaughan is the next man in, and he surely didnt want to come in so early.
England FOW 0-1 Marcus Trescothick b Shoaib Akhtar 0(1)
Well Andrew Strauss has restored some order for England, by hitting as many as three fours in one Mohammad Sami over. Incidentally, all those boundaries were scored off the cover drive and almost in identical manner.
With that Strauss moves to 21, with England's score reaching 30-1.
Mohammad Sami had the last laugh in the mini-battle between himself and Strauss, when he had the latter dismissed for 24. Strauss however was the main culprit, playing a poor shot to well pitched delivery, and throwing away his wicket in the process.
Good comeback by Sami, after being hit by Strauss for three fours in an over.
England now have lost both their openers, with just 40 runs on the board. Ian Bell joins his captain in the middle.
England FOW 40-2 Andrew Strauss c Naved-ul-Hasan b Mohammad Sami 24(31)
Mohammad Sami made it two wickets from as many deliveries, after he had Ian Bell caught by Shoaib Akhtar at cover point. Bell playing his first overseas test match went after a delivery that was pretty wide outside the offstump, and hit it straight to Shoaib Akhtar, who surprisingly was the fielder at cover point.
With the fall of this wicket, England are in deep deep trouble, as their score now stands at 40 runs for the loss of three wickets. Michael Vaughan does look concerned at the non-striker's end now, as the next man, Andrew Flintoff makes his way to the middle.
Its all gone terribly wrong for the visitors so far. A partnership and a big one is needed, if England are to bounce back in this game.
Mohammad Sami is now on a hat-trick.
England FOW 40-3 Ian Bell c Shoaib Akhtar b Mohammad Sami 0(1)
England (1st Innings) 51-3 Michael Vaughan 20*(36) Andrew Flintoff 5*(19)
Mohammad Sami 2-24 Shoaib Akhtar 1-23
The hattrick dint happen as Sami's straight and full delivery was well defended by Andrew Flintoff
Flintoff and Vaughan since then have put in a partnership of 11 runs, and more importantly have steadied the innings after those two quick wickets. But the task has only started, and both these players very well know that have a lot more to do.
