6th Qualifying Match - Sri Lanka v West Indies ,Mumbai

Hello and welcome to the 6th qualifying match of the Champions Trophy 2006, between teams who are in good form this year SriLanka and the defending Champion West Indies . In the last match SriLanka scored 290 against Zimbabwe and in reply Zimbabwe batted well but SriLanka won comfortably as Fernando took 4 quick wickets .While West Indies in their last match performed poorly as they were bowled out by Bangladesh and Bangladesh chased the target so well that they were about to win but some good bowling in the end helped them win that match . But a win is a win and 1 win makes the confidence higher .Today it will be intersting to see who will win this match as its their last match of the qualifying stages and it will decide which team will go in which Group.

Match Conditions
The conditions are excellent and something for the bowlers and the batsmen as well . The sun is out and the temperature is bit low but it will rise as the day progreses .The picth has a green layer on it which will help the seam bowlers as they will get swing for this wicket.

The Toss
SriLanka have won the toss and M.Jayawardena decided to bowl first . Thats a good decision as we have seen that West Indies batting is not strong and they were bowled out in the last game also bowlers will get swing on this track .So lets get the match started and surely it will be a good one .Lets see who win this one

West Indies Innings
having sent to bat early on by the SriLankans, West Indies openers were struggling as the ball was swinging . Gayle was not in his best of forms and he had to play a defensive game today as his team needed him to stay at the crease if they wanted to get a big score. After reading the conditions of the pitch Gayle was batting nicely and then started hitting boundaries .Chanderpaul also flicked one off his pads to a huge six to Malinga on the leg side .Fernando got the 1st breakthrough as Gayle was caught in the deep by Malinga . Chanderpaul also followed his soon by scoring 30 runs. Sarwan and Lara were going nicely . Sarwan was watchful but Lara went on to score in boundaries . Lara scored 20 runs all in boundaries before he was ran out by a super peice of work from the SriLankan captain . In the end of the innings Jayasurya and Maharoof took wickets in quick time and then cleased the West Indian tail easily . West Indies were bowled out again in just 46.4 overs and this were not good signs for them as they were bowled out twice in 3 matches and lost 9 wickets in their 1st game . SriLanka showed a good bowling display as Jayasurya and Maharoof picked up 3 wickets eacha and Fernando picked up 2 wickets.SriLanka won the match in the last over of the match ...but it was really a tough contest .

SriLankan Innings
SriLanka lost a quick wicket in their 1st over as Tharanga was run out for just 5 runs . This had given West Indies a chance to command but the next man in was K.Sangakkara . Jayasurya and K.Sangakkara continued their good form and had taken the match out of West Indies reach. Jayasurya scored a brilliant half century scoring 76 off 88 balls while Sangakkara scored a patient knock of 82 . When both Sangakkara and Jayasurya got out SriLanka were in strong position to win but quick wickets would have taken West Indies back in the match . Gayle was back in the attack and Lara had positioned the fielders to perfection . gayle got the crucial wicket of Jayawardena and then West Indies had a chance to win but Dilshan came in and blasted 3 boundaries in 4 balls off Gayle's 8th over and also was bowled by Gayle on the final ball of the over. In the end it was all easy for SriLanka they just needed run-a-ball and they got it in the end with just 1 ball to spare as Maharoof got the winning runs with a SIX.

Man of the match went to the Sanath Jayasurya for his magnificant innings of 76 runs and also he took 3 wickets.

Monty confident about the Champions Trophy

​

England's left-arm spinner Monty Panesar is confident and is ready to be in action in the upcoming match with India. When asked in press conference about his bowling he said :

"I have really practised a lot in the nets and also bowled well in the practise matches . Test Matches and ODI matches are completely different so i will have to concentrate on my line and length and i will also have to keep the runs down."

When asked about his catching and fielding he said:
" I have really worked on my fielding and i know its an important part when it comes to ODI cricket . One misfield or one drop catch can change the direction of the match. I have worked on my catching on the extreme catching machine and also coach have helped me a lot with my fielding as well".

Monty Panesar was there in the England squad last time they visited India and also bowled well in test matches and also has taken the wicket of Sachin Tendulkar.



England will play their 1st match against India at Jaipur.
