India in England Jun-Sept 2014

DRS is not 100 % foolproof technology. BCCI is not against technology but against imperfect technology. Yes, DRS works.. but most of the time it sucks.

DRS works almost all the time. The problem is not the technology most of the time but those using it. It is well known in LBWs for example, that if it is not clearly hitting or missing then it will stay with the umpire's call. When that happens there is no point grumbling about DRS being rubbish, instead you should realise that it wasn't a clear cut decision that could have gone either way.

DRS is meant to be used when the batsman edges into his pads and given out, or when he hits it in the middle of the bat and not given out caught. Other uses are speculative and when it comes back to bite the team, that is not DRS's fault.

I have to agree with lion, I think DRS is pretty rubbish in its current incarnation for a number of reasons.

Don't think India should have the right to choose not to use it when everyone else does though, classic BCCI bullying right there, but there's an element of ends justifying the means as India dragging their heals will hopefully lead to a better way of using technology.

yes, but it's not used that way is it? it's used to try and save important batsmen in tight situations and very marginal calls.

I don't really understand why, if you challenge an LBW and hawkeye shows it is hitting, we go with the umpires original wrong decision.

Then surely the simple thing to do is remove the umpire's call. If Hawkeye shows it was hitting, then it's out.

This.

Umpire's call has to be the most idiotic thing I've seen in this age of technology in sport, I'm not even sure what that means, are we really putting a human's judgement ahead of a ball tracking system?

give the review back on umpires call imo - it still gives the margin of error that hawk eye clearly has, but doesn't punish a team for reviews that show the ball hitting the stumps...

this is going to be a series full of awful draws, isn't it? What an awful pitch this is...

Ugh, just turned the tv on for that Plunkett over saw two balls where a bouncer landed again before Prior. What a disgraceful pitch, looks like they want it to go five days by any means necessary.

Genuinely annoyed and frustrated by this pitch. This is the first session for crying out loud! As Michael Holding just said on sky - no bowler should be having to pitch the ball in their own third to get the ball to bounce at shoulder height.

They're hitting the over rate, at least!

Those are the two big issues in Test cricket for me. Pitches and over rates. For once, we've got through 30 overs in a session today, but the pitch is poor. Really poor.

Why do we pretend to act like there's a bigger margin of error with a ball tracking system than an umpire? The incompetence of humans is the reason we've had to turn to technology in the first place...

Anderson and Broad was up around 88 at the start of the innings, that's as quick as they get. They were down in the low 80s at the end of the second Sri Lankan test because of how much they bowled in that series, though...

They need to actually give an end to Moeen if they want to use him as the "spin option". That's how they're going to get the wickets on this pitch tbh

If its an abrasive surface, there might be a few wickets taken with reverse swing coming into play. In Anderson and Shami, we have two exponents of the reverse swing. Its an ideal wicket for Cook to come back into some form. Ishant and Binny in a bowling lineup is just what he would`ve hoped for on this track!

Sky's amazing, in-depth analysis: "it's flat; isn't it?"

So Aggers just said on TMS that Simon Kerrigan is with the England squad, has changed his action and is very much in the fold. So perhaps they are trying to get him ready to play as the series goes on as the fabled specialist spinner.
