India in West Indies, 2009

I guess because of so much cricket India couldnt manage to get into semis of T20 WC,matches against SL,then NZ tour then IPL and back to back WC,they were doing really well, but its really too much of cricket for them...

Yes too much of cricket for Indian players,it would be very much taxing on them...

Sehwag, Tendulkar and Zaheer are most likely not going to feature in this whole series. Tendulkar has said that he is not 100% yet. Zaheer would need to rest his shoulder and Sehwag is most likely not going to be there too. I heard that they are toying with the idea of dropping Irfan Pathan too because the wickets in WI are slow and Irfan's pace would make it really easy for the batsmen.

I hope they try out some good batsmen who can cement their place in the side inspite of Sehwag and Sachin's comeback. We should try out Manish Pandey. He has the technique (very Sachin'esque) and he is young and athletic. If this boy has to be a part of our 2011 World Cup plans, he has to be groomed right now so that he can get atleast 50 games under his belt before the World Cup in 2011 comes. This would be my potential team

Manish Pandey
Gautam Gambhir
Rohit Sharma
Yuvraj Singh
Mahendra Singh Dhoni
Suresh Raina/S Badrinath
Yusuf Pathan
Dinesh Karthik
Ravindra Jadeja
Harbhajan Singh
Pragyan Ojha
Ishant Sharma
RP Singh
Ashish Nehra

I would pick Ashish Nehra because he had a good season in IPl-II. And he might be the able replacement for Zaheer Khan (since both are similar type bowlers). Nehra has more pace and better height. With Zaheer not playing, Ishant wont be dropped. Ravindra Jadeja is cut out for ODI cricket and he should be in the team. He can get run a ball easily and he can strangle batsmen in the middle overs and get wickets with his tight bowling. Manish and Gambhir will open the innings and Rohit can go to the middle order where he is better. I wanted to try Virat Kohli in place of Karthik, but I feel Dhoni might need some backup for keeping since this guy has been playing nonstop and has shown signs of back pain before. he needs backup (I pity Dhoni these days, burden of heavy cricket, burden of captaincy and keeping, burden of satisfying the nation, etc). And RAINA SHOULD BAT LOWER DOWN THE ORDER UNTIL HE SORTS HIS PROBLEMS AGAINST THE SHORT BALL! I have left the option of Badrinath coming in for Raina, but I feel it might be too harsh on Raina to evaluate him based on a few failures in T20.

Indian selectors look to work around fatigue and injuries | Cricket News | West Indies v India 2009 | Cricinfo.com

If India's cricketers have a challenge on hand in motivating themselves for an ill-timed series of four matches in a format fighting for its existence, the selectors have a similar task in picking the personnel for those games. The selection committee meets on Wednesday to pick the team for the four ODIs in the West Indies and is faced with fatigue and injuries.

Fighting for it's existence

Is Bardinath going to be playing in this?

The 4 match series is a decent one considering the players are all sleeping in field. :D This is going to be a tough tour for India, we have struggled in West Indies before.

No way. Rahane, Pujara, Tiwary, Kohli and Badrinath are easily ahead of him. You can't just bludgeon someone into the side like that. He played, what, 2 good innings and you're already putting him on a pedestal. You have to show that you can perform consistently over an entire season and if you are going to pick someone merely based on how his technique looked in two matches, at least don't use Twenty20 cricket to do it. OD cricket would be a much better option since it is in the middle (sort of) of 4 day and T20 cricket and not only technique, but temperament, patience and pacing all factor into how one plays an innings. I am also excited by Manish Pandey but it is too early. At the very least, he should play a season of domestic cricket before he is considered. Besides, we have quite a few flashy players as it is. We really need that consistency and reliability in the middle order. I really hope Ravindra Jadeja is picked. His slower innings can be excused in this format and can actually be quite useful in steadying the ship.

All the batsman you mentioned are not openers. Whereas we will miss two of India's best ever ODI openers (Sachin and Sehwag) most likely. Rohit Sharma has to bat at a spot where he is most comfortable. A few more failures from him at the top and he will sing the same "I am not comfortable at the opening spot" line.

I want to replace an opener with an opener. I feel Tiwary has fallen off the selectors radar. And they are not yet willing to look at Pujara. Kohli has a chance but a slim one. Badrinath has been in the radar for quite sometime now, but in recent times he too has slipped from that radar.

We dont have a player by that name in India!:p:rolleyes:

Well, if we want an opener we should go for Murali Vijay or Robin Uthappa. Also, Ajinkya Rahane was an opener for his first season before he moved down to #3.

I was never convinced with Jadeja's batting abilities and he proved me right in the WT20 too.He cant even get a boundary when he wants it.How can he even play International cricket as a batsman.I agree he bowls and fields very well.So if we are picking him for his bowling, then he would oviously replace Ojha in the XI,who has consistently proved his credentials for more than a couple of seasons now.Its unfair to select him over Ojha imo.
Coming on to batting,I feel Manish Pandey needed to be groomed before getting selected for his country.Hes an obvious talent and we all saw that.Maybe its time to send him to the NCA and get him groomed and fit enough for our future plans.
My 15 for this tour

Mahendra Singh Dhoni (C)
Rohit Sharma
Gautam Gambhir
Yuvraj Singh
Yusuf Pathan
Suresh Raina
Subramaniam Badrinath
Dinesh Karthik
Harbhajan Singh
Praghyan Ojha
Ishanth Sharma
Ashish Nehra
Praveen Kumar
RP.Singh
Sreesanth/Irfan Pathan

Sreesanth if hes fit enough, can be a crucial wicket taker for us.

We can open with Karthik and Gautam and use Rohit's ability to finish a game by keeping him in the middle order.

i can't see them winning the series
Fortunately I can see it though.

In ODI's, India have been far more stronger in recent times. In the last 15 ODI's (5 against England, 5 against Sri Lanka and 5 against New Zealand) that we have played, we have had 12 wins and 1 no result (we have lost only two games and that too, inconsequential dead rubber games after winning the whole series against SL and NZ respectively). And we beat both SL and NZ at their respective homes. Guys like MS Dhoni find it a lot more easier in ODI's because its ok to score at a little less than run a ball whereas in T20, the pressure to score almost 2 runs per ball many a time is strangling.

Twenty20 cricket has helped us strengthen in ODI cricket. I think we start off as favorites!

I guess we'll continue with Rohit and Gambhir opening. They aren't that bad.
