India tour of Australia - 2018/19

So Rohit Sharma has flown back to India for the birth of his child. He will miss the Sydney test and will be back a day after the test ends.

This is an interesting position for Kohli now. Will he bring back anyone of the openers? Or will Pandya or Ashwin come back? Is Shaw fit?

To me, he should be front runner for Man of the Series. His knock of 123 at Adelaide was just SO monumental for where India stand now. And yet again at MCG, his knock played a big difference in our victory.

This is why people say modern Cricket is a batsman's game where bowlers get less appreciation as compared to the batsman. Pujara has scored 329 runs this series at an average of 54.67 of which 229 has come in just 2 innings so rest 4 innings he just averages 25 which shows he hasn't been that consistent either and is still vulnerable to the bouncing ball which his dismissals in Perth shows it. If we pick out the batting as a whole he has been terrific and looks very much reliable as well but the ones who actually stood out this series are the bowlers. The pitches this series aren't difficult batting pitches but it all came down to some really good bowling and also poor shots on display. And when we talk about bowling none in this series are as impressive as Jasprit Bumrah who just average 14.65 with the ball and has a strike rate of just 40.2 so it means every 7 overs he gets atleast 1 wicket and also his economy has just been 2.18 runs per over which shows he has kept the batsman quite as well. And whenever he has came on to bowl he just looks a bit hostile with his pace and bounce hitting the batsman time and again. Something more impressive was the way he bolwed at the MCG on a slow and low pitch where bowling becomes a bit difficult but he still troubled the Aussie batting line-up bagging a 6-fer. That is why, Jasprit Bumrah has been a stand-out performer and if he continues this way at the SCG he deserves the Man of the Series[DOUBLEPOST=1546258108][/DOUBLEPOST]
Is Shaw fit?

Flown back to India after Perth Test unable to recover from the injury sustained in the Warm-up match

Shaw has been ruled out of test series. Hence, the board named Mayank Agarwal as Shaw's replacement for rest of the series.

Just looks like he is no more interested for fighting for his place in the Test side just when he looked to get some runs under his belt and started to look as if he has been becoming well-versed with the format he flies back home to meet his daughter. That is just not right, if you remember MS Dhoni waited for 4 months to see his daughter (Ziva) back home. Suggests Rohit Sharma lacked intent to cement his place back in the Test side. Different opinions, different choices :rolleyes

Pandya will come in as 3rd seamer and Ashwin/Kuldeep will play in place of one of the quicks.

Rohit is confident that he would get the chance for all the good terms he has with the Captain and the coach. And if you ask me, I will definitely pick Rohit for next series if I were Kohli and Shahtri. In a country where the 1/3 of the youth population(male) aspires to be a cricketer and represent the country someday, they work hard only to realise that it's too much, considering a lot of competition in each level of cricket like club, district, state etc... But there are people like Rohit who keep neglecting the necessity of country first and family next. Yes, it is a great moment for him as a father but taking example of Shami and Dhoni, it could've been much better.

Hold on guys, its completely up-to an individual to decide whether he/she wants to be with family in times of happiness or sadness. Yes it was inspiring when Dhoni did not flew back home to see his daughter for 4 months but again Rohit is no Dhoni. Why do we tend to be so critical on everything?

Why do we tend to be so critical on everything?
The point is not about going home or serving the country. Obviously it is the primary duty, but the time when Rohit is establishing himself in test cricket and has got a big opportunity to make that count, he could've approached this in much better way.

I am not sure if Rohit reached back home in time for his daughter's birth, but that is more important than playing for BCCI's "India". Again and again I have said this on this forum, playing for BCCI's India and serving India in a war is not the same. BCCI is private entity and any patriotism there is totally misplaced. What MS Dhoni did, is his own gesture. If you see other countries and their players, they prioritize their children's births over playing cricket. Because they have their patriotism placed at the right place.

If Rohit was fighting a war for India at the border, I would be livid with him if he says he wants to come back to be with his wife for his daughter's birth. There, its a matter of a "nation's security over a single human being's birth". Not anywhere close here. If India don't win tomorrow, they will win some other day. No embarrassment, nothing

Exactly my thoughts, even if its BCCI's India or Team India playing a sport and going back to your country for your child's birth is ok, nothing bad in it. If this was a WC I am sure he would not have left the place in the first place. Its just a test series which will happen again in another 3 years time.

Well then this should be the side

1. Mayank Agarwal
2.Cheteshwar Pujara
3.Virat Kohli
4.Ajinkya Rahane
5.Hanuma Vihari
6.Rishabh Pant
7.Ravindra Jadeja
8.Bhuvaneshwar Kumar
9.Mohammed Shami
10.Ishant Sharma
11.Jasprit Bumrah

Pujara should open because he is a veteran and has experienced such a situation also in the Sri Lanka series of 2015.He responded opening by scoring a century and will eat up the balls and make the ball old.
Vihari, I feel is suited for our middle order, right now we should not play with his career and keep him at middle order
So in order to add another player, I thought about an all rounder, of course we have Jadeja as an spinner all-rounder so I added Bhuvi because he was our 3rd highest run scorer in SA and also took crucial wickets. He will be useful with new ball also. Though we already have new ball bowlers. Panama although played two crucial knocks in SA series and England series is too inconsistent.

These are just my thoughts. The end result depends on our management

I don't think SCG is going to be a 4 seamers pitch. And I think Ashwin is at full fitness, which means I would get Ashwin in for Bhuvaneshwar. Ashwin is an even better bat than Bhuvi and it gives us two spinners.

I would actually continue with the 'Vihari as opener' experiment. Truth be said, Vihari in that first innings ate up a lot of balls, thereby blunting the new ball. Yes he has the issue with the bouncing ball, but I believe SCG should be more drier and less bouncy and so I would persist with Agarwal-Vihari at the top. It wont hurt his career as everyone knows that he is a stop gap measure there at the top and he definitely has a solid future ahead in tests at the middle order. And India play their next test (after the SCG test) after maybe 4-5 months. By then, Prithvi Shaw should be back and should duly partner Mayank as India's new specialist opening pair.

M Agarwal
H Vihari
C Pujara
V Kohli
A Rahane
R Pant
R Jadeja
R Ashwin/K Yadav
I Sharma
J Bumrah
M Shami

Ashwin should slot in for Rohit, if Ashwin is 100% fit. If not, Kuldeep should take Rohit's place. Yes Kuldeep's inclusion will weaken the batting a little but we should be good enough with 7 batsman (including Jadeja).

There's more to life than that between the 22 yards. This is not war, it's just cricket.

There are some on social media saying that Rohit not playing is his way of contributing to India's possible success. :lol
