India tour of Australia Nov'20-Jan'21

Pandya hasn't bowled a single bowl in ipl (yet).

Pandya was brought into the team as he gave much needed balance to the Indian team as a genuine pacer and a batsman

If it were 2017, I don't think Pandya would have got a place in the XI if he wasn't a genuine all rounder

But cut to today,
I think the way he has showcased his batting prowess. He walks into the limited overs side hands down even as a specialist batsman. More so now that Dhoni has retired.
You heard it first on Nov 9th by @Parth D

I wish someone pulled out the World Cup thread and shows the thing I have been weeping about for 5 years now that Pandya has to bat 6 and Jadeja 7. It is the combination of these two all rounders that should give India 10 overs and sometimes both can bowl their quota if two bowlers are having an off day.

I still stand by the fact that KL should open and along with Rohit, they can terminally destroy attacks. Kohli is the stability we need at 3 and I think we need to give SKY a run at 4 if Shreyas fails.

Rohit
Rahul (Dhawan reserve opener)
Kohli
Iyer/SKY (both should be in the squad)
Pant/Ishan Kishan (both should be in the squad)
Pandya
Jadeja
Bhuvi
Shami
Bumrah
Chahal

Kuldeep
Saini

This 16 should basically trot around till the 2023 World Cup.

I think for t20s Rahul is the primary opener. His t20i stats are second to none(maybe dawid malan)

Certainly what me and my friend were discussing yesterday, Rahul's gotta open with Dhawan as reserve, and yes he should not keep ffs!

My Indian XI for the first T20. Dhawan over Agarwal for the left variety, Jadeja over Manish/Samson because Jadeja is now ready to be a specialist batsman and depending on matchups, he can easily bowl 4 full overs. He can also play more of the role that Krunal plays for MI. Chahar over Saini because Chahar can bat and is an equally promising T20 bowler. Natarajan over Saini because of the left arm variety and better death bowling skills (due to the yorkers). In case they decide to rest Bumrah and play Shami, Natarajan playing becomes even more important for the death skills.

KL Rahul
S Dhawan
V Kohli
S Iyer
H Pandya
R Jadeja
W Sundar
D Chahar
M Shami/J Bumrah
T Natarajan
Y Chahal

I just don't feel good about this line-up. I feel like we are short on batting. I know Jadeja and Hardik batted really well in the last ODI but it just seems a bit too risky.

The thing is, these pitches in Australia are batting beauties and it was evident in the ODIs. Playing an extra all-rounder for a batsman is not a bad idea on such pitches. Jadeja is almost as adept as Manish or Samson with the bat. Also Sundar and Chahar can bat too. Mostly the top order is going to score most runs.

The Aussies lineup is really weird to me.

Good to see a lot of people are coming around to my theory of playing Pandya 6 and Jadeja 7 if Pandya bowls and a number higher if he doesn't.

More I see Kohli bat in T20's, more I feel SKY and Pant/Kishan have to bat 4 and 5.

Was thinking the exact same thing. Cricinfo has Wade batting at 3, which doesn't make sense as that should be where Smith should be batting and Henriques should come ahead of Wade. Think the Aussies have a pretty long tail today with Abbott at 7, and they've banked on a bowling heavy lineup today. They're essentially playing five specialist bowlers which exposes that tail pretty quickly with a couple of wickets.

Pandya will be disappointed with himself. The delivery he got out to and the one prior would have been in the stands normally.

44 runs in the last two overs
Sir Jadeja!

I don't mind Wade at three given how prolific he has been for Hurricanes but yeah, he shouldn't be ahead of Smudge and Maxi who can both play better. I suppose a lot of these changes are 'like for like', with Short in for Warner, Wade in for Stoinis (as the opener in the number three), Henriques in for Carey (who is badly out of form in any case) and Swepson in for Agar. Some of the other micro changes are based around it like Wade as the keeper instead of Carey due to Stoinis missing out necessitating the inclusion of Henriques. Then again, I don't like their original game plan either. Let Smudge and Maxi bat at three and four, have a Philippe or Handscomb (if he improves in T20s that is) at five and your finisher in at six (Turner was supposed to be the chosen one but has been very poor). I suppose Ashton Agar has to play after his recent T20 performances but you could easily justify having a fit Mitch Marsh in there who could even bat at five or six and get four overs out of him and Maxi. Agar could play instead of the third seamer who will inevitably break down.

Just to put it out there-

We have a spin bowling all rounder and a fast medium all rounder and these two have been showing this for a long time now. I have been saying this much before the 19 World Cup and it again shows the rubbish this team management and captain is.

Now that Pandya is not bowling, he needs to bat 5 and someone needs to bat 6 and give a few overs. Whether that is Dubey, Shankar or anyone else I don't know but given a proper run they can be developed. Considering the amount of cricket we play, this shouldn't be an excuse. But, the problem over the years has been the top 3 playing meaningless dead rubbers and not allowing the others to flourish or develop and when they have tried, they've played clowns like Jadhav as the all rounder.
