India tour of Bangladesh

ODI squad: Gautam Gambhir, Robin Uthappa, Virender Sehwag, Rahul Dravid (capt), Yuvraj Singh, Mahendra Singh Dhoni (wk), Dinesh Karthik, Manoj Tiwary, Dinesh Mongia, Piyush Chawla, Sreesanth, Munaf Patel, Zaheer Khan, RP Singh.

Test squad: Wasim Jaffer, Dinesh Karthik, Rahul Dravid (capt), VVS Laxman, Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, Yuvraj Singh, Mahendra Singh Dhoni (wk), Anil Kumble, Sreesanth, Zaheer Khan, VRV Singh, Ramesh Powar, Rajesh Pawar, Munaf Patel.

The selectors also decided that five extra bowlers would attend the camp in Kolkata. Pankaj Singh, Vijaykumar Yomahesh, Ishant Sharma, Ranadeb Bose, all mediumpacers, and Pragyan Ojha, the young Hyderabad left-arm spinner, will train with the Indian team, although they will not be in contention for places on the Bangladesh tour.

I haven't copied & pasted the whole thing, so you guys can read it on the link above. I'm extremely happy that Manoj Tiwary has finally been given a chance in the ODI squad. The guy has great batting talent, can bowl as a part timer, is an excellent fielder, and has also captained Bengal in various domestic tournaments even with Ganguly in the squad and he's only 21!

Rajesh Pawar is an interesting choice, but he's bowled well domestically so he deserves it. I'm a bit surprised Ranadeb Bose didn't make the Test team, and Ishant Sharma the one day team. I thought they both should have been there ahead of RP Singh and VRV Singh repectively.

Sehwag's in on Dravid's insistence again...should be interesting. Gambhir was definetely a certainty for Bangladesh, but again, surprised at him not being in the Test squad.

Pity that players like Badrinath, Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan have to miss out, but there's only 15 places.

And, lastly, watch out for Yo Mahesh, Pankaj Singh and Ojha in the future. Good to see them in the training camp. All three are turning out to be very good bowlers on the domestic scene, and have already made a name for themselves at such a young age.

Re: The Squad

I have written an article which is in the editing phase about the lesser known selections and should be done by tomorrow in the Article's Sub Forum.

Seeing the ODI squad, I am pretty much satisfied with what the selectors have picked. Resting Sachin and Saurav was a good move. I would have been livid had they been dropped!

Continuing with Sehwag in ODI's is interesting (not what I wanted!). Are they giving importance to his century against Bermuda and his 48 against Lanka?

Gambhir should have been in the test team. When are we going to have two specialist openers in the test team? How long are we going to carry on with makeshift guys like Sehwag, Karthik, etc?

Good that they picked Manok Tiwary. If he succeeds in the ODI's, he is going to pose a huge problem for Sachin and/or Saurav's comeback in the ODI's. I think Sachin will come back easily. Saurav might struggle if Gambhir and/or Tiwary succeeds.

Wait, Ramesh Powar not selected for the ODI's? Wow, thats a really good decision. In the wake of Harbhajan not doing well, everyone was for Powar coming back in the ODI's. But the selectors have instead gone for Piyush who is a better spinner, more importantly a SUPER FIELDER and a much better bat too. I never liked Powar's fitness and it would have been poor if he was selected for the ODI's. He shouldnt be unless he drastically loses lot of weight and becomes a decent fielder.

Rajesh Pawar is a good selection too. Heard lot about him. We need some good left arm spinners. Dont know how good Rajesh can bat. I would also like to see Ravindra Jadeja being given an opportunity soon. He is more of an all rounder.

On the whole, the ODI team looks a young and fit team (Dravid is a fit guy too even though his fielding looked below average in recent times; but now with Sachin and Saurav out, he will take care of the slips and we wont see much of his fielding).

I think Sachin will replace Sehwag for the England ODI's. Suresh Raina should come back soon. We need at least two brilliant fielders in the team who can inspire the rest. Kaif should also be itching to come back. His fielding is the best ever in recent times (not even Yuvraj can be above him!).

Overall, pretty much OK but there is lot of scope for improvement. More importantly, the selectors havent made drastic changes. They have recalled some of the players, and have given opportunities to only two.

I think VRV and Munaf might be back to their regular pace, now that Guru Greg is OUT! I always feel that India needs these guys to bowl at full throttle at around 140+ km/h consistently.

Yes, I suspect so, why not? A century against any team is good (especially considering their bowling is not as awful as Netherlands) as is a 48 against Vass, Murali and Malinga. I cannot emphasise how important it is to keep faith in quick hitting openers, see: Matthew Hayden.:)

Me too:)

Why o why do they keep on insisting on failed players like Dinesh Mongia & RP Singh. This is stupid and frankly theyre just going round in circles. I saw this press conference live and only one word can describe it, Shambles. Dilip bhai looked ticked off or realli nervous he was not himself and god i hate that nirajan shah. And a question to bring up. With no Gautam Gambhir and Sehwag in the Test Squad whos going to open with Wassim Jaffer.

I think they're planning Kartik to open. That would make sense because if i recall he did quite well with Jaffer when he opened in the first test match against SA. They made a hundred partnership. Correct me if i'm wrong on the last detail. That was highest opening partnership for India during their stay in SA. One thing is for certain, india are going to be a much better fielding side in the odis. I think RP Singh wasn't such a bad choice considering he's young. I don't know much of Mongia to be honest.

Didnt we hear recent news that Sreesanth was suffering from a tennis elbow injury? How come he is selected for the ODI's and the tests. Its baffling.

If he is fit, he needs to be groomed for taking over the spearhead mantle. He bowls at a good pace, and swings the ball superbly also along with excellent seam position. We need to get rid of slack guys like Zaheer and Munaf. They can be there for the test matches.

I dont think Robin Singh would be able to work too much on Zaheer, Munaf, etc. They are poor fielders. What on earth in RP Singh doing here? He doesnt have great pace, he is nothing special at all. Why is he being picked? He gives lot of runs.

Same with Mongia. Hasnt played a good ODI innings apart from that 159 (that too against Zimbabwe). Just a part time spinner, and a decent fielder. Dont we have better options than him?

Not axed at all. Rested as a young squad is to be taken to Bangladesh under the instructions of the BCCI working committee.
Why Pathan and Sehwag, both are good players?

This selection is a joke when vengraskar was askedw hy did you pick dinesh mongia? his answer we need a left handed batsman to counter bangladesh
left arm spinners when somebody asked why not ganguly his answer was we
are trying young players he seemed to forget dinesh mongia is 31 yrs old
he is a tried tested and failed performer.rohit sharma deserved a chance.then they pick rp singh who does not have that potential compared to yomahesh or ishant sharma and pick powar for odi team is he a better fielder than habhajan? he may be a good prospect in test but in odis he is not fit enough.onmly good thing these bunch of jokers made is picking manoj and piyush chawla.also i think ravi shastri who was going gaga over dineh mongia in espn star commentary during southafri ca topur was responsible for inclusion of him.its a pity we are moving backwards than forwards prepare for
a whitewash in england and australia.

whatever happens we will wait and see, but one good thing will come out of this is that if we loose again to bangladesh, nobody will remember india's performance in the world cup haha..

let the players prove their place in the national team, and this is a fantastic opportunity for the youngsters. but I was expecting more youngsters to be picked for the tour.

Also I want to know what was the reason for not picking Pathan. He did not get his chance in the worldcup, and they drop him here. Hmm interesting decision.

have to agree with ya about sreesanth, he is mentally tough and no batsmen worries him, we need more bowlers like him.

the rp singh decision i am also stumped... no idea.. what they were thinking.

According to Manjrekar the word "Rested" has been used for its poiliteness. They have been dropped.

Is Manjrekar the "Board" or the "Selectors"? He is just an individual with his own opinions.

Sachin has just been rested and the same with Saurav. But I believe Saurav will find it more difficult to come back than Sachin who will easily come back and who should come back!

Looking at the Indian squad I feel Bangla should at least win one game against Inida....I predict IND win 2-1 ODI series and also Bangla will draw one test and India will win 1-0.

Yeah, after thrashing the Aussies in the final, both Sachin and Saurav must be drowned in all that glory and need months of rest, aint it?

Dont show me all ur sarcasm, OK.... I am more than ready to reply!

Many Indian fans had been wanting long time back, for the players to be rotated so that they are kept fit for the important assignments. Vengsarkar's statements dont sound bad. I am damn sure Tendulkar will be back for the England ODI series.
