Not in a mood to start a battle here but Rohit has scored 12 hundreds in 2016-18, just a dip in form, Rahul has just played a good knock and people are like Rohit needs to go!
Let me break it down to you.
First of all, I'm no Rohit fan but I don't buy into the BS of dropping him. He's proven now he's quality,
but quality doesn't always quantify
impact. The irony of the current situation is really funny. The reason why most people are bigging up on KL is
potential which is a term Rohit has made a fortune out of.
Let's face some facts- Is Rohit deserved of his place in the XI?
YES. After 13 years of international cricket can we convincingly say that he's our go to guy in a pressure match even after Kohli?
NO.
Rohit Sharma was never an opener. He was made one by Dhoni because he was the better batsman and Rohit took up the challenge which he must be applauded for. Is he the best choice for us today in 2018? Absolutely not. This isn't an opinion, but a fact. Anyone who's seen KL bat in the past 3 months would be barking mad to say so. Is he matching the promise that Rohit has deceived us with for a decade? Perhaps more.
There are some decisions that cannot be explained. But, they have to be taken not to harm an individual but to benefit the team because no one cares after two decades about individual glory but only about what the team achieves.
Let me give you an insight as to why I'm believing what I am- When AB debuted, I thought of him as a talent but not world changing. He was good may be a great for the future but was he bookmarked as someone who would change games when he arrived? Could he single handedly make bowling attacks on lively tracks look stupid? I'm in my head his greatest fan but I never thought so. But, a time came when he just understood what he could do and his growth superseded normal boundaries. KL Rahul is exactly there. I'd rather take my chances with that than take what I know I will get from Rohit because we all know he's peaked. The growth from here will be marginal but with KL it cannot be quantified and it's borderline scary how good he is.
I'm not one of those who envies or loathes Rohit, but he's not the superstar his numbers portray him to be after he began opening. It's a smoke screen of epic proportions. After 10+ years I remember one good innings of his in the world t20 of 2007 which was by no means earth shattering and a good knock in the QF of the 2015 WC. Were his doubles special? Yes. But were the situations he got them in adverse? Quite the opposite.
Tendulkar went 2 drop in 99 and just prior to 03. They were both bold moves but incorrect. This will be less bold and if not correct, at least an ambitious one.
Most importantly- Is it wise to disturb the positioning of Rohit/Kohli? I leave for you to decide. And in this case, the numbers are chalk and cheese.
