India tour of New Zealand 2020 - 5 T20Is, 3 ODIs, 2 Tests

I really get amused to see those short balls of Neil Wagner. His short balls are very much skiddy kind of deliveries and are hard to get runs off. If you mistime it you would edge on to your stumps or the man at square leg will get a dolly. How does he bowl those ? :spy

So our great skipper is thinking to open with Mayank Agarwal and Prithvi Shaw in ODIs. Really strange decision this. You have a designated opener who is more experienced and you want to bat him at 5 and to keep wickets and have 2 debutants open in Overseas against the swinging ball ?

I am not against Rahul batting at 5. Because Rahul is no way opening when we have Rohit and Dhawan back. I am looking forward to see Rahul bat at 5. We need someone who is as good as Rahul at that position. I am more worried that Rahul will continue to keep which means Pant is out of the picture. Not a fan of Pant but it must be hard on him. Hopefully he will work on his skills and come back strong.

But don't you think when Rahul has opened for India the momentum shifts towards them in the early overs which puts the pressure back on the opposition ? I would've taken Dhawan for all costs in my team 7 years ago but with the form and the approach he has right now it is better to move towards Rahul. Hard on Dhawan but that is what we did to win 2011 WC, didn't we ?

Both were in the A team and played ODI matches as well as 4 day game in the past month or so And Mayank is our 1st choice opener in Tests so he supposed to be good against the moving ball, so overall a very good decision IMO.

Also given the fact that Rahul has already played down at 4 and 5 it makes perfect sense to have two proper openers at the top when the option is available.

Finally the India no.4 scores a century! Well played Shreyas Iyer hopefully he makes the no.4 spot his own for years to come.

People talk about NZ not having Boult,Ferguson & Henry but remember India is playing with a lot of newbies too - Shaw,Mayank and even Iyer for that matter has been there for last 6 months.

No Rohit,Dhawan,Pandya and Bhuvi as well.

Thankfully the management had the sense to not include him like the ECB are doing with Bairstow. These are the only two tests we play until the World Cup and potentially damaging Rahul's confidence or technique yet again isn't worth it, when Shaw or Gill are very likely to outperform him in tests.

A bit sad that we won't get to see Rohit versus Wagner though. A bowler who has made his career exploiting the nuances of the short ball versus Rohit who has a tendency to play the hook frequently would have been an interesting battle!

New Zealand pitches have been deceptively flat for quite a while now. Two spinners on those flat surfaces is quite needless and with the form Ashwin is in, leaving him out of the team would be a bad choice. Jadeja has also not been at his scintillating best with the red ball now. However, he has shown that he is capable enough as a batsman at seven with those valuable and aggressive 50s and given the recent trend of teams playing all-rounders in test cricket more frequently, I wouldn't mind him being in the side to give our main pacers a breather. He gets through his overs quickly with control too, exactly what you would want from a potential part-timer and he is a very good full-time spinner.

The sore sticking point here is Saha. The best keeper in international cricket without any doubt (at least until Foakes is back), but he seems incapable of anything more than twenty runs at this point. A true number eight and given Ashwin hasn't really shone with the bat for a while either, having him in the side leaves the batting too thin. On the other hand, I've always been in favour of Pant playing overseas tests even if Saha is the first-choice at home as his batting is a lot more valuable in overseas tests and Pant's keeping to pacers is adequate enough to compensate for any errors he might make. Saha has played only eight tests in non-Asian conditions (out which four were in West Indies) which should make this decision a straightforward one on paper.

Saini isn't the current incumbent either, this is his maiden test call-up and as much as I've criticized Umesh for wasting opportunities in overseas conditions, he is very likely to take the new ball if Ishant doesn't play which makes his inclusion another straightforward decision. For the first test:

  1. :bat:Mayank
  2. :bat:Shaw
  3. :bat:Pujara
  4. :bat:Kohli:c:
  5. :bat:Rahane
  6. :wkb:Pant
  7. :ar:Jadeja
  8. :bwl:Ashwin
  9. :bwl:Shami
  10. :bwl:Umesh
  11. :bwl:Bumrah (rest him in the ODIs if needed either, he has to play in the tests)

Gill has been marvellous for the A team and I've been wanting to see him in the main team for a year now, but Shaw deserves a chance as the incumbent. Saini can come in if we feel the need to rest Shami or Bumrah in the second game if New Zealand prove to be hopeless in tests too or else if Umesh wastes yet another chance terribly.

Couldn't care less about the ODIs, especially given how New Zealand's head coach himself is going on holiday. A home ODI series against a top three side when your team is mentally shot to pieces and he is going on a break? Even if this was planned in advance, it makes zero sense when your team is in tatters. There have been other puzzling decisions too, like the persistence with Southee for the umpteenth time or replacing a top order bat in Williamson with a middle order bat in Chapman, when a player like Will Young who has a century versus Australia away would have been the clearest and most natural replacement. Worst of all might be the decision to have Sodhi play in the first ODI alone, then withdraw him so that he can play a first-class game versus India A, when he should be fourth in line for spin duties with the red ball.

Wonder how long this farce might continue under the facade of 'perennial underdogs and classy guys punching above their weight' when are a top class side now who have been routinely embarrassing for a while now. We give far more stick to the likes of Bangladesh for such poor performances and bemusing selections these days, let alone the likes of India or Australia!
I would go with Saha instead of the second spinner, i think you have to go with the best keeper. Ashwin or Jadeja can definitely cover whatever weakness Saha has with the bat. Pant could play as a specialist batsman at 6.

I cannot believe that Rahul hasn't been asked to open and I cannot believe he's being wasted at 5 currently. I cannot believe even more that he's not in the test squad. Sometimes, you just know when a bloke is about to explode. I love this place so much because a few of us called it before it happened over here! Rahul is just ready to be that next Rohit Sharma or Virat Kohli!

It's really infuriating the see India lose matches like this. They have got batsman to score 300+ runs on regular basis which they fail to do, they have got bowlers to bowl opposition out under 250 but every series one of the matches they concede more than 300 runs to opposition and lose the match without giving in a fight. I just hate the fact that we don't put emphasis on our selection regarding our bowlers and keep being batting dominated with our mindset. Shardul Thakur isn't a bowler that should be playing for current Indian team but we still persist with him just because he could score runs better than our other bowlers. And why even persist with Jadhav he neither gets chance to bat nor to bowl, instead we could've played Chahal or Saini in place of him.

The current Indian side have in them to become world beaters but they just give in with their overconfident attitude towards the opposition and keep on losing some important matches.

Tbh he doesn't fit in the playing XI of our Test line-up since we have better openers in Agarwal and Shaw. Both of whom are pretty confident about their game and have the temperament to succeed. In Rahul's case he was known to be a Test player when he was handed over the Cap but he just lost his way in Test format and for some reason switched over to T20s. He has glaring issues with his confidence in red ball Cricket. At the end of the day it is no one but Rahul himself to blame to find his way out of the Test squad.

In my view keeping in the current scenario in place the ideal team to play at the Auckland should be

Mayank Agarwal :bat:
Prithvi Shaw :bat:
Virat Kohli :c::bat:
Shreyas Iyer :bat:
KL Rahul :wkb:
Manish Pandey :bat:
Ravindra Jadeja :ar:
Kuldeep Yadav :bwl:
Navdeep Saini :bwl:
Mohammed Shami :bwl:
Jasprit Bumrah :bwl:

That is incredibly hilarious coming from a Rohit Sharma fan brother! :lol

KL Rahul has centuries in Australia and England which Rohit doesn't. There comes a time in everyone's career where they simply break through and scale to different heights. I absolutely agree now with Rohit being given the chance to open and since he's injured KL Rahul absolutely deserves this opportunity.

Once again today, the sixth bowler was missed and once again Jadeja the batter was WASTED.

This pathetic lust for deepening the batting line up continues. Shardul Thakur is the worst bowler to have played for India since Doda Ganesh I think.

Saini has to play. Shardul is overrated. But why did Jadhav not bowl today? What was Kohli doing?
