India tour of New Zealand - Jan to Feb 2014

^ Well, at least you can say "We are in the learning phase and in time we will get stronger". We can't get away saying that :noway

How the fearsome tweak does Ishant gets so many wickets with that dodgy seam position? Now he will never change that seam position again and we can't drop him for next 15 matches. I hope this wickets gives him some confidence to do well in England. Shami supported Ishant very well but my concern is Zaheer Khan. He is not looking the same bowler since the end of the 1st test against South Africa. It's like he has just faded away and looking at his age, it's not surprising. It will be very interesting to see if he gets picked for series in England where he has usually been pretty successful. It looked like Dhawan was batting on a different surface and it's good that he was there till the end of the day. Pujara's wicket again came at a wrong but I hope Dhawan carries on.

Disappointing a little with Pujara's failure (though he has got starts in all innings, he has failed to capitalise which makes me call it failure). After having done really well in SA against some of the world's top bowlers of current times, its a little disappointing from him. But he should take it in the chin and try to resurrect himself in the one remaining innings.

Excellent stuff from Dhawan. Looks like he is a decently quick learner. On a Day 1 pitch (that's green to rattle the Indians), playing like this when people are saying that you are reckless, is OUTSTANDING! Hope he continues tomorrow and makes another big one. This time, it could take India to a potentially winning position.

And I dare say this again - don't give India a green pitch. It makes our bowlers (yes, bowlers like Ishant) our weapons. The best way right now to beat India is to make our bowlers listless, and that is with pitches that don't provide close to any support to the bowlers. That way, the opposition can pile up runs and India's batsmen will wilt under pressure of the runs they have to chase.

Couldn't agree more about green pitches. The spiced up green wickets (coupled with overcast conditions) really bring out the best in out bowlers. Its the bouncy wickets that create issues for the Indian team - bowlers don't know how to use the bounce and the batsmen cant tackle the bounce

You have to remember that Dhawan, Rohit and Kohli played 5 ODI's in this conditions before coming into the test series. You can't expect Pujara to come in and start scoring runs straight away especially when he is playing in NZ for the first time. You need to give him some time to adjust and that is why BCCI needs to arrange more warm up matches. So the guys like Pujara and Murli Vijay who are our test specialist right now can adjust better.

The other factor is that Pujara, apart from the horrible waft in the first innings at Auckland, has been out to good deliveries. The one that got him yesterday was a beauty from Boult.

You're so utterly spot-on with your green-pitch analysis, it's not even funny. I'm flabbergasted to see so many oppositions choosing to play us on green pitches. India's weakness is our fast bowling - why provide us with a tool that suddenly makes us better? The best pitch against India would be the kind regularly produced in Australia - fast and bouncy but little lateral movement, no spin, and no swing.

Irrespective of the result of this game, I`m impressed with our test side. If you look beyond results, we have been really good both in SA and NZ (tests). We dominated at Jo`burg and only one really bad session lost us the game at Durban. We were a couple of good decisions and half a partnership away from winning at Auckland. Our bowling has again shown how green conditions make India more potent as a test side.

Going into a year of overseas tests, leading to the England tour, I think we are on the right track and just need to fine tune this side and we will start winning overseas again. I would bring in Yadav or Aaron in place of Zak. Ishant should`nt be considered a surety either. Jadeja is developing well as a lower order bat and if he can get us tight spells with a couple of breakthroughs, he should be alright for the test side. Rohit Sharma cannot be persisted with anymore. There are far too many batsmen knocking the door for him to be persisted with.

I would have Zaheer around for one more series, maybe not pick him in the X! but surely have him around. The others seem to rally around him that much better when he plays.

That was a brilliant inning from Rahane and a much needed one for India. That patnership between Rahane and Dhoni changed the game. Now I hope that our bowlers does well in the second inning and we don't have to chase too many in the last inning.

Take a bow, Rahane! What an innings! An overseas test century and that too on a pretty challenging wicket against some good bowlers... Splendid! And didn't expect that counterattack from our captain! He played a fabulous and surprising knock. Though Dhawan missed out on the hundred, he comes out with enhanced reputation after two superb innings.

I am very happy with our batting. These guys have shown that they can possibly survive the test. A victory here would give us so much happiness.

P.s: Hope this is lesson learnt! NEVER NEVER EVER give us a green pitch.

Edit: Ishant opening the bowling with the first over! What a change!! Dhoni must feel his chest swelling with all the backing he gave Ishant when he became the butt of jokes.

Wagner needs to be warned of his no balls ,not just when he gets the wicket, quite a few went unnoticed and those are runs, its ok for him to use the crease and push the limits but he has to do so within the line.

Fantastic innings by Rahanae, love the way he timed the ball for boundaries at the end.
