Indian Premier League - General Discussion

In all my years of watching the IPL this was the first year where I hardly even watched a full game.

Felt boring to even stay updated within the scores or result.

And its been the same around my close friends circle as well.

Wonder how much television rating impact IPL has fallen to compared to last few seasons.

Maybe because the games are too predictable, no home games, MI & CSK performing poorly and maybe you are just in that zone where you feel uninterested.

On my part I felt that there were still many games that were actually interesting and worth following. And this IPL does seem better than previous year's atleast.

Games like

GT vs LSG @Wankhede
RCB vs KKR @DY Patil
GT vs DC @Pune
RCB vs RR @Wankhede
PBKS vs GT @Brabourne
RR vs LSG @Wankhede
CSK vs RCB @DY Patil
MI vs PBKS @Pune
GT vs CSK @Pune
RR vs KKR @Brabourne
MI vs CSK @DY Patil
SRH vs GT @Wankhede
DC vs LSG @Wankhede
GT vs MI @Brabourne
MI vs SRH @Wankhede

Yesterday's match

All these matches were pretty entertaining and worth watching.

It's been more exciting by virtue of crowds being in the ground. That comes through the TV on those close matches.

Its not the matches its about the overall interest for me which has gone down.

Maybe due to too much of cricket being played before and after the IPL.

Or Maybe the affinity to certain franchise isn't there anymore.

It has been since 2013 ever since Sachin Left MI my support for the franchise was never the same.

We both are in the same boat. This was the first ever season where I havent watched a match completely. Its been here and there but not completely. I also did not care what was happening. I know there is a lot of money involved and everything but if IPL has to survive, it has to go back to 8 teams or perhaps 6 teams. If they cannot do that, they need to reduce the number of days this gets played. This was one of the most boring IPL's ever and it gets compared to the days of Pune warriors when that team was boring!

I agree that the increased number of games dilutes interest after a certain point in the IPL! And the BCCI is moving towards lesser and lesser double headers (read a report recently that they're planning for it in 2023 where they'll have lesser double headers). But maybe the boredom sets in for us, the internet/social media warriors. Would be interesting to hear what the general Indian public (the monstrous engine that drives cricket's audience base as we speak) felt about this.

I know the well reputed teams didn't do well this season, but I still liked watching the lesser known guys make a splash this season and create new triumphs. Gujarat have been a total surprise and so have Lucknow been to a certain extent. It's almost a dream come true for the BCCI that the two new teams have hit the ground running in their very first season, both at the same time. This season actually made me watch more non-CSK games (due to the excitement of the two new teams and all the shuffles due to the mega auction and the hype of how X player would look when playing for his new team).

And this last point makes me more positively inclined to the idea of the mega auction atleast once every 5 years. I definitely think there needs to be the occasional 'reset' button and it can definitely be extended to 5 years (from the current setting of once every 3 years). I do though think that adding more new teams will be bad for the IPL. They've hit the ceiling and I cant see how the IPL can get more interesting with extra teams.

I remember myself not missing a single IPL game between 2015-2017 (I think I missed the game where Amla smashed a ton against Gujarat Lions). And even 2018 was an exciting season. But I do agree 2020 upto this season the interest have dropped down. But that's maybe because of all that Covid scenario where we don't have crowds and all that stuffs.

Personally I felt really odd to hear the crowd sound but not see that colourful audience and their expressions and all. But most of the interest dropping is only because people might find something better or maybe they have something more critical to attend in their life. I don't feel increasing teams have contributed to the lack of interest. But I think 70-matches is just a little too much.

Covid has made us realize the CRUCIAL importance of crowds in a cricket match. Most people thought that with mega bucks being doled out for broadcasting rights and all, the TV audiences were more important. But NO! Audiences in the stands make the game interesting. When the audience are not present, they had to resort to fake crowd noises to keep the TV viewers happy. I didn't enjoy the 2020 season because of this reason. And even though CSK did bad this year (2022), it was still way better than 2020 because of this reason.

Its imperative that BCCI works to ensure better experience for the people attending the games in the stadium. This will lead to more excitement in the games, the trickle effect of which will be felt by the TV audiences and will most likely lead to even bigger revenues for the broadcasters and ensure bigger broadcasting rights deals.

Viewership is down by 34% as per data. The reason is not only that there are more games and boredom but also the quality of broadcast and the number of ads. I literally cannot watch a game being completely immersed in it.

34% is a huge drop. Surely that doesn't suggest that what people want is more.

Although, I wonder if this factors in lockdowns and different working conditions that might mean more people were watching last year.

I am sorry this might sound a little naive-

But I always wondered over the years that how do people calculate these viewership numbers?
