Indian Premier League - General Discussion

There wasn't much purchase on this wicket for spinners. This was a "mix it up and make the batsmen work hard for runs" type of a wicket. I dont think Solanki or Theekshana would've helped on us. This wicket needed a Pretorius.

I hope Simarjeet is having some issue and that's why he was benched. He looked good last season with Mukesh, and he should replace Tushar ASAP. I would even have a look at Matheesha Pathirana, who got Dhoni praising him to the skies towards end of last season. Maybe he could be our death option like Malinga.

I think you'll always find a use for an attacking spinner and while Theekshana isn't as aggressive as your wicket taking spinners in the mold of Rashid, Hasaranga etc... he's still more useful than Santner if the latter isn't bringing his WC form. I agree that Pretorius is a necessity with the lack of death bowling options anyway. Sunk cost fallacy would mean that Stokes isn't getting dropped even if he should be the one who should be. Conway might be harshly axed as Dhoni at eight with batting depth below is a little too much. As shown by today most teams won't make use of that much batting depth even if it is available as they're firmly rooted in old ways unless it's England.

To add on Pathirana, I'm not a fan of him. He had a good outing in CSK colours but there's a reason why he's been generally unimpressive outside of it, he's too raw and it's difficult to have both him, Hangargekar and one of Deshpande/Simarjeet in the same lineup to manage. I can see him developing into a good bowler someday but I don't think he'll be a big difference maker at the moment.

EDIT - Magala had a good day for SA today. While he tends to be expensive at the death more often than not he still is a death bowler first and foremost, can bowl up to the low 140s and can also swing the bat. Think he should slot into this bowling unit once he's back.

I agree. It was annoying to see Dube and Ruturaj slow down at the fall of Rayudu's wicket. I mean come on, when you have Rajvardhan at No. 11, it was selfish on Dube's part to find his footing (guess he wanted to play himself in so that he can last the whole season in the XI). Inexplicably Ruturaj also slowed there rather than taking Alzarri on. Had we posted 190, we would have won this!

I suspect fatigue was catching up to Gaikwad. They should have worked out a plan where Dube went after the bowlers in that case. I'm not a fan of him trying to secure his spot in the side if it were true, there isn't a lot of competition for his role as the alternatives are a classical Rasheed, Jadeja clones in Mandal and Sindhu or Senapati. Besides that you know with the CSK team that you're not getting axed quickly especially if you're seen as a first team player which Dube is.

Maybe they bring in Rahane and have him open with Rutu. That way you can play only two of Conway/Stokes/Moeen. And play both Pretorius and Pathirana/Magala for away games. And play Theekshana for home games and in games where spin will be a significant factor. If they rely on Tushar and Chahar for death, we're screwed

Hangarkekar lucky Mukesh got injured or else bench was it is.

If CSK were planning to play Chahar and a left arm Chahar in the same XI then all hope is lost. I doubt they'd have been that bad.

I'm not a fan of Rahane either. But perhaps all the domestic cricket has done him a world of good?

Actually if Mukesh was available, he would've started in the XI ahead of Hangargekar. Its true that luck plays a part. Nothing wrong with it, and Hangargekar grabbed his chances (from Dhoni's statement post-match, looks like he is impressed).

CSK don't need to justify their slowness in handing opportunities to new/young players in the XI, because of their track record of 4 trophies and extremely consistent playoff record (11 playoffs out of the 13 seasons they have taken part in). One can definitely see that with the old guard slowly leaving, new players like Mukesh, Simarjeet, Hangargekar are getting their chances. I sorta feel that Shivam Dube's success last season could cost us this time, because he is clearly not made out for slower tracks and even on true tracks, decent bowlers seem to be able to bounce him out. Negative foot movement and gave 2014 T20 WC Yuvraj vibes today.

Just learned about this new Impact Player 2023 stipulation in IPL - seems a super interesting concept. In a way now - you are excetionally playing with 12 players and adds value to being a speiclist bowler/batter.

Wonder how the teams will use it? Might weirdly be worth playing 3 overseas in an XI knowing that you can then "sub" in a death bowler! Or if you're batting can bring in a finisher.

I can see teams mis reading the pitch and then replacing one of their seamers with a spinner if the pitch is turning or gripping or vice versa.

The way commentators talked about it... I'm assuming most teams will just look to use it as a tool to bring in an extra batter/bowler in the second innings depending on the need. I still think it's a lot more useful than that as you've suggested; bringing on specific bowlers to play a part in a different phase of the game or a finisher to suddenly get those extra runs that are still available.

I'm assuming that if you replace a player whose already been dismissed or has finished his bowling quota they can't bat/bowl again because if that isn't the case this rule sounds like it could be ridiculously well exploited.

The fact that teams can name a team after the toss, in addition to the impact player seems to basically make it 12 v 12. Barring instances where a team might end up with wickets down early on why wouldn't most teams just do as the teams seemed to do yesterday and bring in an extra batter/bowler in the second innings.

The two rules combined seem to cancel each other out.

I expect owners ultimately want a return on their investment - shelling out on massive squads - where half might not play. Although, I have my own theory that the BCCI want to crowbar it into the international game to increase their chances of winning a tournament because they often have the best squad but struggle to pick an eleven that is as well deep in batting or bowling as other teams.

If the player has been dismissed or already bowled 4 overs, the replacement can still bat and bowl 4 overs. Only rule is the team can only use 11 batsmen total.

Went to the Match yesterday, it was fun. Dhoni's batting was all I wanted to See. Nice Experience, Never Going again. Home is more Comfortable for Me. :halo:

Ikr! The entry was at 3pm while returning only at around 1am and the arrangements for food wasn't really pleasing. It was a great atmosphere inside the stadium but the hassle to get to and from the stadium in the traffic was a bit too much. Pre-booking the parking spot, cannot carry water (thanks to what has happened in the past at various stadiums) et al.

I would prefer watching the match from the comfort of my home any day. I would much rather watch a movie in theatres than be in a stadium to witness a match or a concert.
