Indian Premier League - General Discussion

Maharashtra needs to sustain the IPL for a month. Bengaluru only needs to sustain this test for 5 days.

I feel, this could be a BCCI dictat, as they really do not want to shift the IPL out again and invite the ire of the public.

The duration of the tournament does not matter at all. COVID does not float around in open air for days. Aerosolized coronavirus can remain in the air for a max of up to 3 hrs. And this is mostly for indoor environments. In outdoor environments with the wind factor and all, that number comes down drastically. It has repeatedly been proven that risk of getting COVID outdoors is low. Last year the Delta wave was so huge and was causing deaths all around. More than the positive cases of the players, it was the burden of hosting a tournament in the country which needed diversion of resources to other critical areas, is what forced the IPL out.

Anyways the BCCI is only letting in "fully vaccinated" folks into the stadiums (I support that move and hope this requirement stays atleast until end of 2025). With fully vaccinated people and being past two big waves (population immunity wall is way big) and also a stronger vaccination program, its time to return to normal.

My stance on this is the same - its way past time that the world needs to return to normal. Indoor theaters in India are functioning at 100% capacity with no masking or social distancing. Cricket needs to get there and the best place to do it is IPL!

I get your point ,entirely!

The world needs to open up. Maybe, the BCCI is taking this with a pinch of salt. They wouldnt mind a problem with a bilateral against SRL, but when it comes to the IPL, I believe, they want to ensure to be as stringent as possible. Remember, they lost the WT20 hosting and really wouldnt want a mess again.

Lets hope that as the IPL progresses, the crowds are invited back to full capacity.

MSD is to CSK what Sachin was to MI. I am sure they won't make it direct even when they have decided to move on from him. If he fails to perform, there will definitely be some indirect way through which he would be kept out. I remember Sachin having a really cold IPL and was on fringes to get dropped in 2013 IPL. He came up with a half-century in a high pressure run-chase and suddenly walked out of the ground owing to some unknown injury. But I feel that MI were adamant to play him in upcoming games which they might've been made clear to him. And to reduce to uproar and negative reaction they came out with the injury thing.

It would be foolish of the owners to make it direct about moving on from Dhoni and face the wrath of the fans.

Also I think it's a good move to hand over the reigns to Jadeja. He can surely take the team forward.

MSD has handed over the reigns.. I will never understand this man. Ever!

He has timed it really well, just like he did with his international captaincy transition. I just can’t stop adoring this man (MSD)

I did feel it would be better to give the reigns to Ruturaj, but logically Jadeja is a senior, in the form of his life, has 4-5 years of cricket left. Maybe Ruturaj will now be the vice captain. I don’t expect Jadeja to captain CSK for 10 yrs like MSD. That transition will happen faster.

With MSD behind the stumps, Jadeja will have the smoothest transition he can possibly think of. It’ll still be MSD team and with Fleming there. MSD will take some position with CSK long term and be with team. But it’s tough for fans because of the legacy. This was his last piece of captaincy legacy left. Now it’s done! It is very emotional. But life moves on!

This is an end of an era. Even though the legend's batting was not as strong as it used to be and understandably so, the man has played 538 international matches and scored over 17000 runs across formats. The pressure of batting for a cricketing side as India is huge. His captaincy was still as fresh as the first match he captained for India. What differentiates MSD from everyone else is his captaincy. I am happy to read that he will still be involved for seasons to come with CSK. Wish he got one final match at Chepauk and reigned over the captaincy.

Having said that Jaddu is in his form of his life, he still has plenty of fight and cricket left in him. With MSD with him, the transition will be smooth. World please take notice, this is how leaders behave, they prepare the future generation while they stay providing inputs.

Ehh? Timed it well? A day prior to the IPL?

I'll post a detailed version why I feel it a stupid timing from MSD, but this certainly isnt the way to do it.

With Dhoni and CSK, all this 'timing' thing is from a fans/public perspective. From what I'm reading about franchise officials comments, it looks like the idea of transitioning captaincy to Jadeja was set in stone much before start of IPL last year. Jadeja knows what's coming. I am guessing the core leadership group behind the scene knew what's coming.

From a fans/audience perspective, Dhoni announcing it well ahead of time before this season could've made them analyze it to death and could possibly have sidetracked them into a lot of negativity (of which could have spilled over into Jadeja's international stint). A day before the season starts feels very right from a timing perspective. And with Dhoni staying on as a player (like he did with India), the impact on the fans is very minimal. All of this put together makes the timing very good.

I know you might bring up the selection of Dhoni as the 2nd retention (thereby blocking 12 crores). Remember one thing, CSK is almost like "Dhoni's property". He is the Godfather, King Maker, whatever you call it. He is the de facto leader of the team, and is going to be guiding Jadeja from behind the stumps and be a big part of the strategy on and off the field. So him taking those 12 crores is not a big deal. And when he retires, 12 crores frees up for CSK and they can go all out for some big buys (maybe a Stokes, or get back Sam Curran who might be hot commodity when the next auction comes in).

The auction value is redundant because they got Ruturaj for 6 and once MS signs off, he will simply claim that spot and empty a little bif of the purse. This is all pre arranged in my opinion. We have just been told now.

What was seeming like long term madness will now be a smooth transition.

Well no! From what many experts have pointed out, retention spot of the player makes a big difference in the purse that the franchise will have, for the next auction. Since Dhoni was retained as the 2nd player (which is 12 crores), when Dhoni calls it a day, CSK get 12 crores added to their purse. They can pay Ruturaj more than 6 crores even right now (that will be off the table and probably legal too), but from an IPL auction perspective, CSK will get a boost of 12 crores to their purse when Dhoni retires.
