Last Movie You Watched

Saw Boyhood and Birdman recently. Boyhood's my favourite movie of 2014, Birdman's second.
I'm yet to see The Grand Budapest Hotel and Nightcrawler though, so this could change.

Continuing, Boyhood is a tribute to the last 15 years - a decade into the future, it might well be the movie we'll all watch to remind ourselves of the time, and the way it's made is an achievement on a grand scale. The Before Trilogy mesmerized me, and I rate Boyhood at the same level, if not higher.

Though I would have had Boyhood win the Oscar over Birdman, both the movies are different and difficult to compare, though it's kind of obvious to see why Birdman won, commenting on something the jury would relate with. That being said, I loved how Iñárritu took the concept of superheroes and narrated it in his own, darkly twisted way, something I haven't seen in cinema so far. Combine that with exceptional camerawork, acting, script, background score and handful of intelligent literary references, and Birdman ends up being one of my favourite movies of the last year.

Wild - 6/10

A good performance from Witherspoon and some taut direction skills are the only redeeming points for this movie. I totally did not relate with this story and pretty much hated the main character. Cheryl Strayed's life is full of terribly stupid actions and decisions, so much so that when something as grievous as her mother's death strikes you hardly feel any sympathy for her. And it almost seems like she hitch hiked most of her trail instead of trailing and had unexpected help around every corner. Hardly a tale worth caring about.

This gives me an idea. I think it would be fun if everyone were to list their top 5 movies of 2014.

Favourite movie of 2014 Nightcrawler.

Gone girl was good, Lucy was ok.

Annabelle, Jessabelle, Ouija, Women in Black 2 all of them awful they can’t make a decent horror film in general these days, Ghosts walking up walls and screaming like dinosaurs. The Shining (1980) remains the best horror ever made.

Fury, another turkey not a patch on saving private ryan or black hawk down.

Hard to find a decent comedy too, dumb and dumber 2 was the best one.

Heard good things about whiplash.

I am yet to watch some allegedly "great movies" from last year like Nightcrawler, Boyhood, Whiplash, Imitation Game etc. My favs so far:

1. Interstellar - an absolute epic. As good with the emotional bits as it was with its visual and sci fi bits
2. Gone Girl - thrill ride from start to finish. Rosamund Pike was fantastic
3. Edge of Tomorrow - just sheer fun and entertainment
4. Birdman - innovative film making at its best. Stellar performances
5. GOTG - had an absolute ball in the theaters with this[DOUBLEPOST=1427050299][/DOUBLEPOST]

horror movies almost always disappoint these days unfortunately :(

But I really want to watch babadook. It is actually supposed to be good. Have you watched it ?

Interstellar- Wayyy overrated, just because its a Christopher Nolan film. First half was so boring. Second half got better, and was fairly exciting. Sound quality was shocking. I could almost never hear what they were saying because the music was too loud, and I think that was the biggest reason I didn't really enjoy the film. McConaughey, Chastain, and the young actress who played the child Murphy were all great though. McConaughey is doing some great movies (Mud, Wolf of Wall Street, Dallas Buyers Club) and even TV shows (True Detective) lately.

LOL @ overrated because its Nolan. And I watched the movie thrice in theaters in different formats (IMAX, UltraAVX and regular screening) and I have no idea why people complain about the sound quality. Barring a few moments in space and Doctor Brand's death bed scene everything was very loud and clear for my hearing abilities :)

Actually loved the first half more than the second half, which was quite brilliant anyways. The father-daughter interaction between Cooper and Murph was incredibly well done and very emotional. Loved its connection with the second half of the movie

Interstellar's charm wore down rather quickly for me actually. It has a lot of forced emotion, and it ultimately lacks the gravitas and purpose that Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey had, a favourite of mine I inevitably end up comparing Interstellar to, for the need of a standard. Where Interstellar fails is that despite being emotionally intense at times (which, as I said, also seems forced at times) it fails to make a commentary on the universe or humanity - I'm not saying it needed to, but that's something which will hold it back from being remembered. The physics and the visualization is exciting, and that'll probably be the only part I'll keep loving about it (although the reason for there not being any spaghettification near the black hole still escapes me), but Nolan filled the unknown aspects of universe with the most unlikeliest ideas - like 'love is the answer' for example. It panders to the emotions, but it's hollow really.

I'm yet to view it the second time though, which I'll do soon I hope.

thought about it. but it's way too long! lol

@abhi_jacko if the sound quality is a frequent complaint, it is probably a sign that it wasn't very good.

i'm not saying it was a bad movie. it's an ok movie. i'm just saying it is overhyped, because most people are just trying to kid themselves that you would only like the movie if you understood the scientific logic (which isn't actually very sound). acting was good. the idea was good, but poorly executed. the scientific information and logic was really poorly conveyed. whenever it got confusing for the viewer, they just had a character read out a monologue from a textbook, rather than actually incorporating it into the movie. there is no message. there is no theme. IMO anyway. obviously you disagree.

I haven’t seen babadook but it’s on the list to watch. Interstellar was disappointed with that turned it off after half an hour I was bored, reminded me of signs and very similar to many films. Birdman still haven’t seen this one and it is meant to be good. With horror films they are remaking poltergeist it’s out this year.

I'm looking to watch Let The Right One In soon. It's supposed to be one of the best horror movies to have come out in the last 10 years or so.

I have read about that one. Getting rave reviews from audience and critics alike
