New Zealand in England May - June 2013

Any long shot England had is gone now. Needed to go at least until midway through the second session and blunt this new ball without losing a wicket.

Root did well in India, and he seems a good player of spin, but he looks very worryingly weak against a moving ball against decent seamers. Will obviously improve, but it's something he'll have to work on.

That's 2 catches they've dropped now, off each of the batsmen too... :facepalm

Bairstowe out second ball as well. Like Butcher said he's currently a walking wicket.
I don't think we have the batting to pull this off. If we can lose more wickets in the hour after tea we have a chance but the way Boult is bowling the game might be over by then.

Bairstow or Bopara? Who's worse?

----------

Also just realized England lost the practice match as well..

Not Bairstow's fault in my opinion. Was there really no contingency plan in place for a batter getting injured other than bringing in a guy who's not batted since August?
Poor management.

Bairstow was a part of the England side that won the second test in India, late into November (?). The only other alternatives were Eoin Morgan (who would have been my preferred choice) and James Taylor (who's not even a part of this tour if I'm right, and also last represented England in August, unlike Jonny).

Do love the crazy umbrella fields you get in these situations.

Reminds me of this

Well played England great fight being shown once again. Something which our batsmen are in need of.

But I think it masks the issues of why England are even in this situation a little.

Which I think is largely a lack of intensity - Just won in India give a big middle finger to the subcontinent criticism and got the ashes coming up. They simply didn't care until they realised they were about to lose.

I'm still here; I regret nothing.
McCallum must be regretting waiting till Fulton got his 100 to declare though. Could have had an extra session.
Not to mention Brownlee dropping Bell.

5 overs to hold out; must be a twist in the tale still!
