New Zealand tour of England - May/June 2015

Wood is looking like he has something to offer the pace is fine but he needs time to learn how to be effective with it. Bell surely has to depart for me and Taylor to come in, Bell has been a great player for us but I think he has peaked and is on the downhill slope would have to put Cook in the same category. There has been good signs from England in this test but it looks like a squad that has gaps that need filling. Broad not sure what to say he doesn’t resemble the player he was a few years ago something is a miss. Whatever England do it needs to be fast with Australia around the corner they don’t need another white wash and on home soil.

I'd love to see Taylor come in, but I still think Bell has got a fair bit to offer the side. I'm still not convinced by Ballance, and I think at the moment I'd rather have Taylor and Bell than Taylor and Ballance.

The biggest problem we have at the moment is the lack of a full-time spinner. I don't think Ali is good enough and Root is a proper part-timer). There are players like Riley, Borthwick and Kerrigan who are young and have potential. But if Ali is batting so far down the line-up, we may as well pick Rashid or Tredwell.

I think Wood is worth sticking with, but as with the like of Woakes, Jordan and Finn, there seems to be a reluctance to give Fast Bowlers time to settle in. A lot of the problem is that Anderson and Broad are always given the new ball, regardless of how badly they are bowling.

Taylor has to be the next cab off the rank in terms of batsman, Bell will get more of a go than others, considering his experience, although he really shouldnt be in the slips.
Got a feeling Wood will be perserved with, Broads pace is up which is good, but isnt bowling that well for a while now, when Woakes is fit, ie the Ashes i fell he will come under serious pressure, and he surely has to be batting at 11 given his form until that point.
Jordon and Finn just arent consistent enough, Plunkett would be a backwards step.

Who do people think should be the spinner, Ali was better today, seems to be a rythym bowler, im still not convinced by stokes as a bowler seems to be similar to 2009 era Johnson, quick but slightly lacking the control.

Im quite interested in Ansari, his bowling is developing, and unlike Borthwick who is similar in terms of all round contribution, he actually gets a bowl for Surrey

Yes its always Anderson and Broad that are given the new ball and it won’t always happen so I would say that the captain needs to be more imaginative who is putting the ball in the right areas who is more in form maybe something that is noticed in the nets and use that instinct. You want your 2 best bowlers but in some cases they will be lacking motivation. I would keep Wood and Woakes and work with them but let Jordan and Finn go.

I think a player like Jacques Kallis or Ricky Ponting as an example peaked but found new levels and carried on progressing to remain world class and that’s something I am not seeing with Bell I know he isn’t legend material but at the moment not convinced he will improve. We have a new era of batsman that are coming through who are more suited.

Rashid has done well at county level and I would have to choose him as a second spinner to Ali, seems a waste to put Ali so low down the order he has a good batting technique. There could be times to try out a young spinner see how he does maybe when a series is already won or lost. That’s the problem really no full time spinners and England have been lost since Swann retired.

Trouble is, I thought Wood looked kinda poor to be honest; quicker than anyone they've had in a while, but just leaking runs. Looking at comparable bowlers, he's nowhere near the level of Marchant de Lange, and he can't get near the South African team. Saying that, whether England have any better seamers, Anderson aside, is up for debate.

I still think Plunkett was harshly treated.

I thought Plunkett’s international career was over but he came back into the team and looked like a natural and was also clever with the ball wasn’t a hit the deck and see what happens for few overs but couldn’t agree more how he has been treated. Suppose that’s the difference Australia Chris Rogers he came in and fitted in and stayed.

Just think Wood has a lot to work with but needs something more in his locker than pace and England are not the most patient team when it comes to new players suppose that’s the worrying part that other nations like South Africa, Australia or New Zealand see the talent and stick with it and see beyond a few innings.

I've always rated Rushworth (and Onions) higher than Wood at Durham. I know Wood's younger but if he deserves a chance, Rushworth deserves a chance, IMO.

Rushworth just doesn't bowl quick enough. I think Onions will play in the Ashes if Anderson gets injured.

I agree with all of your points, but just wanted to add that yes, Moeen has good technique, but I prefer Butler and Stokes as batsmen. In my opinion they should be ahead of Moeen in the order, unless Moeen opens the batting. This would mean Lyth would be dropped, but it is Cook who should be dropped and Root made captain.

I'm also not sure if Jordan should be discarded. I don't rate him at the moment, but he has the pace, can be dangerous, and is also dynamite in the slip corden. Finn has had his chance, twice, and not taken it. He also isn't setting the county world on fire, so his time is up.

I thought Wood's first spell was good. But his second spell, just after lunch, was really poor. Absolutely no danger at all.

I'm a huge Plunkett fan. When he was used as the 'enforcer' by Cook, he was wasted. Also, he can bat a bit and our tail is feeling a bit long these days.

Moeen batting at 8 with the tail as partners is such a waste. He was brought into the squad as a "part-time" bowler, he became an all-rounder and now he's become a bowler. I know Stokes is more aggressive, but I think Moeen's the better batsman. Jordan and Borthwick are quality players and deserve more opportunities but it seems there's no room for them right now.

Bell has to go; he averages 32.96 over 18 months; his average vs WI was 31 despite starting with a ton, and he failed at a crucial time yesterday. It's a long term decline, he has just got to go.

I didn't realise his stats were so bad!
