Jaques is the man yep
Dont agree with u about Rogers as backup though
Give Hughes a small taste of the bigtime.
If he fails no big deal he has a taste of it an should be even hungrier for success at state level.
He will be told its only temporary until jaques/kat return from injury.
So not much pressure on him to perform.

Also gives him experience so that if hes needed in 2 years time permanantly hes coming in with abit of experience.

I believe because our squad is still very old when someone is injured we need to be replacing them with youngish players 20-27 to give them experience an a slight taste of the bigtime to keep them interested an hungry at state level.
1 young player mixed in with all the experienced players will be a great learning experience.

Also means when all our experienced players retire those young guys have experience an can hopefully take over alot easier.

Unless its a huge high pressure important series then it might be asking abit much thats the only time we should look to the older experienced players like rogers, hodge etc

Funny enough seems Hughes has a hip injury and Jaques is still struggling with his back. A dark horse could emerge if both of them can't get their fitness up.

Marsh is going to do a Steven Bradbury, and cruise into the spot, with the others falling over at the finish.

Marsh for opener

He was meant to play today for his Sydney club team. Hopefully he'll be fit for Jan 30, same with Hughes.

Marsh needs FC form before he deserves it.

I think Rogers should be first backup up to the Ashes in 2009 (he has form in England and is more experienced to step in should he be required). Hughes is a good option long term but I wouldn't want him to make his debut so close to such an important series. Rogers has the runs on the board for years now, including in England (county cricket).

Marsh is very poor from what I've seen to date. Agree with that Jaques should be the next up. Rogers and Hughes are very good back up for that, but hopefully by the time the next change becomes necessary, Rogers will be well and truly too old, and Hughes will be cherry ripe.

If neither Jaques nor Hughes are fit, and they don't pick Rogers, then we can finally say that they've totally lost the plot.

There was that article of Katich supporting him going down the order for Jaques and Hughes to open, which I would love. Although he probably didn't really think about the part about him moving down and taking over whom?

He was going to move done for the domestic match so Jaques and Hughes could open and push their claims for being the Australian opener.

What I'd like to see is Katich move down to the middle order for Symonds'/McDonald's spot, and have Jaques and Rogers open in South Africa. I think that would put our batting lineup at its strongest. I'm also not convinced Katich will do well in England against the new ball, considering he is a spin specialist and is vulnerable to the swinging ball as proved in the last Ashes series.

all aussies are vulnerable to the swinging ball.

Maybe before the ashes they should get in the nets an train with them beach cricket balls so they can get used to the swing haha

As we have seen many times if the ball swings we are useless.

Don't mind if Katich moves down but it does leave our openers very inexperienced coming up for the Ashes. If anything we probably need a 6 that is a good batter, Symonds would be extra suspect against that moving ball. Picking a guy that has gone well in the County cricket would be our best bet.

And of course we need a swing bowler! If we are going to struggle against swing we may as well dish it back out to the English instead of giving them a free passage with our seam bowlers.

Yeah, I doubt any team has been consistently successfully against a hugely bending ball.

I don't think we should move Katich just for the fact that he's been so successfully there for the past year and he himself has said he likes batting at the top instead of sitting around waiting to come in. All we need to do is just pick someone to partner him and it'd be a pretty bad decision (even for these bunch of selectors) not to pick Jaques as the first contender if fit considering his record at both levels.

Yes, a swing bowler is a must for England considering how we suffered last time without a good one and also the inexperience of our seam attack. I still don't think the selectors will tho despite saying 'horses for courses' they'll probably stick with what they think is the best four and ignore the swing.
