England batsman are unlikely to average as high as other places because England is generally the best place where there is more for the bowlers.

I don't agree with that Sureshot, certainly not these days. It can be tricky going in South Africa, New Zealand, and Australia. Adjusting to other countries conditions as well is no easy feat. Generally English pitches are pretty good, and have been for a good 5 years, this Old Trafford pitch one of the first in a while with more than a little help for the bowlers. South Africa have Kallis, and Smith was before his slump in form (maybe still is, can't be bothered to check), Australia have more than a few, and New Zealand have none. So it is not all conditions.

Especially since someone like Dravid averages more abroad than at home, Yousef averages very highly in England, and someone like Ponting has only ever really struggled in India. Conditions are no excuse.

I hope those weather predictions aren't true; It seems that bad weather may be the only way Pakistan can avoid a defeat here. Damn weather!

Pakistan were due to have one collapse like this in the series...it was one of those days when Harmision's bowling was awsome, and Pakistan batsman just followed eachother one by one...surely England fans might rate this as best spell ever bowled by Harmison ?

and I really hope it doesnt rain..this can really turn out to be a good test match, if Pakistan can somehow get England out for atleast 350, then there will be lot left in this match cuz dont forget it was just day 1 today!!..

Possibly his best spell in England, but his best spell ever was in Jamaica 2004.

I'd say third best behind Lord's last year against Australia which is behind his 7-12 gainst the Windies in 2004.

Oops! I forgot about his Lords vs Australia spell; As far as bowling was concerned it set the tone for the rest of that series.

Wish the last session could have gone on for a while as pietersen and cook looked in very good nick, hopefully they can carry on in the same vein tomorrow and ram home our advantage

I'm not giving conditions an excuse, but it is probably the most bowler friendly country to bowl.

Lords slope fo Wicket to wicket bowlers.
Headingleys swing
OTs bounce

The only regular place in England that is a batsmans paradise if The Oval, Lords is getting more accustomed to higher scores.

Anyway of late England have never had a batsman (maybe KP since the Ashes, but even then Colly has lots of runs since Oval last year) that has always outscored his team mates and thus scoring more of the runs. (Kallis, Lara, Fleming, etc).

I agree with the point made about no English batsman outscoring his teammates, but I think this applies for our bowlers too. Most countries have bowlers who take a huge chunk of their wickets; Warne for Aus, Ntini for SA to name a couple, but apart from a few great solo performances like Harmy today, England generally share their wickets around.

I'd say his performance against the West Indies at the Oval in 2004 deserves a mention behind todays performance. He took 6-46 that day.

I think the second paragraph of this article makes a lot of sense. Now that they know Flintoff will miss the series, they know exactly what they have to do personally. I don't think this is the last we'll see of Harmison tormenting the Pakistani batsmen in this series.

Agree with Sureshot on this one.

English pitches tend to be high quality for batting but always offer something for the bowlers. At Old Trafford it is typically pace and bounce, which England exploited and Pakistan couldn't handle. Some pretty poor batting by certain members of the Pakistan team though. Farhat has to go in my opinion, get Butt in. I think Pakistan have missed a trick there after Butt's success against England in the winter.

Monty, you were awesome today. A finger spinner turning it more than a wrist spinner is some achievement, expecially on a 1st day pitch!!

Was a great atmosphere in the ground today, and can't wait for tomorrow!

I hope so. When Harmy is at his best, he is just unplayable.

That was against a totally shambolic Windes batting line-up, so i rate the other 3 higher because the 7-12 was when England weren't exactly that good, the 5-43 set up the series and it was against Australia and the 6-19 was against a great pakistan batting line-up. It was still great though.
