Yeah, I agree. His performance was poor in last 4 games. but he didn't play down the order. he just played 7 games at #3 and no more, well you come down.
He has batted at three before, therefore has batted down the order before, ironically during Pakistan's last tour of England
Cook at no 3
vs Sri Lanka (2006) : 89, 23, 34no, 24, 5 = 175 runs @ 43.75
vs Pakistan (2006) : 105, 4, 127, 23, 21, 40, 83 = 403 runs @ 57.57
He opened in the Ashes down under the very series after those two, and averaged 27.60. For me there is more than enough evidence to try him at no 3, two hundreds and two 80+ scores besides with only two scores in single figures. Although even then he got in and got out too often with six scores out of 12 between 20 and 40, one being excused as not out.

Indeed. Australia have in past won a lot of 1st Tests through their preparations and the ability to deliver full intensity when the other team can't. Letting obvious things like that slip is simply not up to standard.
Ashes down under
06/07 (L0-5) England lost 1st Test by 277 runs
02/03 (L1-4) England lost 1st Test by an innings & 384 runs
98/99 (L1-3) England drew 1st Test
94/95 (L1-3) England lost 1st Test by an innings & 184 runs
90/91 (L0-3) England lost 1st Test by 10 wickets
86/87 (W2-1) England won 1st Test by 7 wickets
Doesn't prove anything about preparation, or that England wouldn't have lost if they hadn't lost the 1st Test four out of the last five Ashes tours, but not losing might be a good start to the tour and set the tone. It's the last place i the world you want to go 0-1 down in the 1st Test
