IPL Players retention for season 7

I really hope this goes like football like the transfer window soon, if only match fixing could be dealt with.

The retention policy is just early Septembering retarded. I only check the cricinfo scorecards, but I don't even know who's on which team anymore.

That's contradicting, shravi.:( One of the main purposes of the retention policy is to build loyalty, fan base and a long term connect with certain teams.

I like the retention policy. As far as CSK goes, its really a no brainer to retain MS Dhoni. Second retainee should be Mike Hussey. Third should be Suresh Raina and the fourth guy should be R Ashwin. Rest, we can try to buy back.

It's not contradictory. I'm saying they should do away with retention and just let players stay on one team after purchase, unless another team buys him off them in a transfer window.

Agreed. Teams should be able to sign each individual player to contracts for a certain number of seasons, like in the NBA. This whole wipe-your-slate-clean after every few years is annoying.

I guess it is a way of 'small' teams to compete, and have everyone with an equal chance to win the trophy. But i still think its stupid.

Hahh! :lol
I feel it shouldn't happen unless Cricket become more popular like Football. Cricket has few players in comparing Football. That's the way, it has very few amazing entertainers like Gayle, Malinga, Kohli and few other TT stars. So I just hope everyone of them should play in most of the leagues around the world and it would help to make Cricket increasingly famous game. :)

^There are more cricketers then footballers and that is thanks to Asia but the set back there is that football is more famous and thus you don't here much about match fixing the transfer window goes well and the owners are not corrupt I mean I heard of the thing named "Terminating the contract of a manager" but seriously terminating a whole team? :facepalm

It should actually be S.Badrinath ahead of R.Ashwin. Badri adds so much value to the team and there are teams which would bid for Badri too, so retaining Badri is a much wiser decision.

So recent update is that RCB has retained virat , ab d and gayle..,

we all saw that coming ,didn't we .. Anyways awesome decision by Rcb management.. Waiting for the auction now ..

Indeed, excellent choice. Now they need to pick up a couple of good bowlers in the auction, preferably Indian...

Seems like all teams are looking to retain their best players. Its a obvious logic by the way. KKR retained Narine, RCB retaining Kohli, DeVilliers and Gayle. Teams like Mumbai also might be thinking to retain Rohit, Malinga & Pollard. If all that happens then auction will be there for a formality only. There won't be interesting anything. :(

No Mike Hussey? You have to be kidding me.

----------

Good choices made by RCB to retain their best 3 players but what's with Daniel Vettori as the head coach?

I thinK CSK might nab Hussey in the "right to match" card that they can use in the auction. Right now, they can use it only once. They will probably use it for Hussey. If they get Hussey, they would have retained basically the core of their squad.

I am pretty sure CSK will go all out to buy back the players who have played for them in the previous seasons, like Badri, Vijay, etc. If other teams are smart, they should be trying hard to grab some of these CSK players that have not been retained.

Who needs vijay and badri..? Let them play for csk only ... :D there are much better players to grab at the auction that those two :D

Domestic cricket and international cricket are two entirely different things. And Badri is a run machine in domestic cricket and has been CSK's backbone in many a matches where the top order struggled. And Vijay right now is India's top preferred opener in tests (well he outdid Shikar Dhawan in South Africa). And Vijay has been a IPL hero for quite a few seasons now, and has been a lynchpin for CSK at the top of the order. It would disturb CSK's balance for sure if they don't buy back Vijay. And both Vijay and Badri have played for a super successful IPL side before. So they know that feeling of playing for a side that has been dominant.

If other teams don't fight for Badri and Vijay, they will all play into CSK's hands of getting the balance as good as ever before.

This player retention thing is one of the main reasons why the IPL will not really be taken seriously outside of India. How are the fans expected to keep a hold of which player is on which team, when the majority of players would have played for 3 teams in the last four seasons (after 2014). Pretty much why I gave up following the IPL after the third year.

Interesting that Vettori is now supposedly coaching one of the teams, guess thats the end of his NZ career.

I'm pretty sure the retention policy does exactly the opposite of what you said it does. How can an fan be loyal when the players shuffle around teams so often?
