Pro Evolution Soccer 2009

Great to know you're done. I'm still hanging with that old link, its doing a solid 70kbps though thanks to IDM. :p

Still around 3 hours to go I think. Will most likely play it tomorrow morning only lol. :p

Hmm, the general feeling I get from reading opinions (of sensible people, not the silly fanboys) is that the game hasn't changed much and that it's still a quick game of automated football.

Play it. Now. It's PES5, beautifully polished, with some excellent fluid animations and incredible ball physics.

PES 2008 this is not.

Well despite what Madman says, this is excellent. Nothing like Pes 08, i was expecting it to be the same but its not. Only played 2 games on top player, drew 0-0 both times, but its great. Really like it, Fifa loses again. Will play some more tomorrow, when i shall also get a chance to play and post my fifa 09 review.

Exactly - it's just a polished PES5. I already have PES5. Another version of it, just with different animations, graphics and physics is not worth ?32.99 to me (or even ?10 for that matter) so downloading the demo is a bit pointless for me because I am not going to buy the game, and I know that for sure now.

The animations look far from fluid from what I have seen as well, and it has that 90 degree auto-feint thing for skilled players which defies the laws of physics (real people cannot shift body weight that quickly and keep their balance, it's impossible) which really annoyed me in PES6.

There's always next year I suppose... Where the (much needed) "complete overhaul" is supposedly happening.

Well I know you haven't played it yet, so I'm going to wait until you do ;)

You're basing all this on assumption and videos, playing the game is whole different kettle of fish. So far I'm just loving it.

My mini review after about 3 hours.

Graphics - Much improved. It's 60fps locked on my PC, which is too be expected, but disabling V sync got me a healthy 78 average. There is no slowdown at any point, unlike 2008 where replays were dogged with jutters. The player models are excellent, there seems to be more emphasis on body mass than previous games, Torres is noticeably slender whereas Rooney is quite stocky, as of course it should be. A subtle yet stark difference to 2008. The kits are fine, nothing revolutionary there of course, with a better sizing of the badge. I was playing it at max details, 8xAA and a resolution of 1920x1800 and it did look excellent. My only compaint - how far out the default cam

Physics - I've always liked PES ball, its always moved in a pleasing way, but I think they've nailed it now. It's so well tuned, the way it skids off the surface depending on the pass, and doesnt spin like the FIFA ball, instead is more subtle in spin and a well struck shot hardly moves in the air without it coming off the right bit of the foot.

Gameplay - The main juice, of course. As I've mentioned in previous posts, PES has gone back to the winning formula which made it so popular. It's slowed down too a perfect speed, not to slow that its laborious, but not so quick that it feels like pinball. The passing is down to a tee, particurly the manual passing which is easy to use and has some great results if you get it right (I see what you mean Madman). The animations are fluid, and even though the admittedly camp running action remains, it doesnt look quite as ridiculous as last year. All in all, its a blast to play

Keepers - Last years Goalkeepers were, well, abysmal. And thats being kind. This year, although the demo is obviously on low difficulty, much improved. My first match was restricted to a few shots from long range due to my adjusting to the games speed, and the keepers got behind the ball and didnt make any stupid parries. They still look hesitant almost on corners, but once a demo expander gets here we shall see as we can crank up the difficulty.

Defence - My other main quarm with 2008, was the defence. To often the full backs went walkabout, making it easy to pass it out wide and stretch the centre backs. This seems to have been sorted, they no longer gallop out of position, but only venture forward when needed and usually hang back, just as they should. Unless, of course, you use them as overlapping, and I've noticed that the wingers do either track back or are caught out of position, something that cant be looked at as a weakness as that is football and the risk of the overlapping tactic.

Overall then, I'm enjoying this, a lot. It seems to have gone back to its roots, and created a game which is as gratifying as it is fun.

I'm picking up both PES and FIFA this year, but its probably too close to call about which I prefer at this moment.

It's over 1GB, and I am on a 15GB/month download limit, so I am not going to waste a chunk of the download limit on something I am 99% sure I won't like and won't buy.

It may be all well and good to people who have just played football games in the PES way, but I can't stand that way any more. After just trying the manual controls on FIFA and adapting to them, I just cannot play PES without it just frustrating me.
It is natural to me now to look for players' off the ball runs and try to play the killer passes, that is an impossible way to play on PES as all the passes are AI controlled, meaning if one finds it's intended target and puts them through on goal then it's a complete fluke.
Even playing PES5 now with mates isn't fun any more for because of this. When I score I feel no satisfaction as I didn't control any of the passes leading up to it, or the shot.

Not only does the FIFA manual passing system let you play those great killer passes, it changes your mindset and the way you play the game. You need to think about each pass, do the most sensible thing (i.e. don't try and pass out of defence, just clear it away) and be much more patient in your build up. It all makes for what I think is the closest thing you can get to the real thing.

Agreed, even on PC Fifa 09, you have to think about how to unlock the opponent's defence and you have to use those manual passes.

Wasn't the 'complete overhaul' supposed to happen in PES 09? I'm sure that's what they said after the release of PES 2008.

It's what I expected from watching the videos, but now it's confirmed to me really. That may be what some people are after, and it will most likely/almost certainly be the best football game on PC, but i'm afraid it's not what I look for in a game.

For me all PES has now over FIFA is:
- Superior edit mode (but FIFA doesn't really need this tbh, would be useful in some scenarios though such as changing the odd stat/hairstyle)
- A training mode (The arena in FIFA is a fantastic idea and very well executed, but i'd like a training mode with teammates as well)
- A more responsive/effective super cancel (FIFA doesn't need this as much, as the AI is more intelligent and usually does what you want it to, but in some cases the good old super cancel would be useful)
- Maybe Be a Legend mode, as it's unlimited seasons supposedly (well, until your player gets too old) compared to FIFA's 4 season Be a Pro Seasons mode (that said, 4 seasons is a lot of games!)

A lot of people will be able to enjoy it though, that's the main thing. Games are for fun, and different people get their fun in different ways :).

As well as that, I'd still say PES has superior ball/heading physics, even compared to the NG versions of Fifa 09.
