Shakib - the 5th best spinner in the world?

obviously, I don't the intricacies but if you change it to the last year, and not just this year (cause rankings aren't reset on the 1st of jan) shakib stands up a lot better (and include australia, new zealand and sri lanka) though yeah, I'm a bit lost as to why mendis isn't higher.

maybe they are weighted to that you get more points for teams rated higher than you, thus shakib would get more than the others when he does well against good opposition.

or maybe it's a match by match thing and you get points after each match rather than overall (which I think could well be the case) and shakib hasn't really been tonked about by anyone, only one instance of an economy over 5 in the last year and he took 2-38 that match. mendis though he's had some ridiculously good performances has also taken some hammerings.

dunno, but looking at his stats, 26 wickets at 22.00, economy at 3.39 I can't say he doesn't deserve his placing. he wouldn't be the player to make me want to change the rankings.

Shakib's stats in 2008:

22 wickets at 33 with a RPO of 4.23 and a strike-rate of 47.

His best innings haul was only two wickets in 2008, that to me shows he isn't a match winner with the ball.

And his SR is a lot higher then anyone else bar the other Bangladesh bowlers.

ok lets say this is a stupid ranking. so? now what?

i still dont care. i think he is a great ALL rounder. and at age of 22 he is leading a side that has had more downs then up.

i can only feel happy for him. and hope he continues playing good cricket and take Bangladesh farther.

Totally agree with everything you just said. Shakib's a very good player and for a 22 year old I can only assume he will get better. My whole argument was how bogus the rankings can be at sometimes.

I hate these rankings too TBH.

But since the thread has been bumped...

Murali
Mendis
Bhajji
Vettori

So Shakib must be the 5th best spinner in the world if you consider those 4 better than him. Whether Shakib's better than Ajmal, Kaneria, Bandara, Herath, Kartik, J.Patel, Swann, Haurtiz, Afridi and Panesar is up to debate...

Howsie has a good point. The rankings are definitely flawed, but then again rankings usually are.

Shakib is a really good player. He'd be about 5 for me too. He has won them a lot of matches actually lately. He's carried them on a few occasions with bat and ball. Easily their best player.

No one really cares about the rankings. They're meaningless. But since a Bangladeshi is on them for once I can understand why MacLovin is wetting his panties about it.

I think Praggy Ojha would probably be a better spinner than him. Definitely Afridi too.

But Sakib is definitely awesome.

We're talking test cricket here primarily. Afridi is not a test bowler. Ojha doesn;t even play much international cricket so that is laughable.

We can consider Tests and ODI combined.

But that is an interesting thought. Ojha hasn't even played Test Cricket yet, but he could possibly be a better spinner than Shakib. After all, it isn't hard to get into the Bangladesh side, but toppling over Kumble, Bhajji and Kartik for the India team is difficult.

Style bhai was never quality.

Shakib's bowling action is very difficult to pick, imagine a nice flighted delivery with this action and the ball turns as well and that's why he can rip you off if you don't have a good footwork. Some of the West Indies players definitely proved that and he certainly has the ability to test a lot of quality batsmen in the world.

Ojha is also fantastic, he flights the ball really nicely and he turns the ball big and he did that so well at Trent Bridge (Where the pitch was reasonably fast). IMO the left arm fast spinner Panesar doesn't even come close to him.
