Shakib - the 5th best spinner in the world?

Shakib has taken more 5 wicket hauls this year than Flintoff has in his entire career, the ratings are not flawed.

And before you say it is just because all the other Bangladesh bowlers are useless and he has no competition for wickets, I would like to remind you that Shakib took 7 for 36 off 25 overs (or something like that) in one innings in a test v New Zealand, that is great bowling in anyone's language.

he took 4 5 wicket haul in a row, could have been 5 in a row, if he had gotten ONE more wicket vs SL test 2

ICC Player Rankings

#1 all ODI
#10 all test
now 6th best ODI bowler atm

w00t. Nice, not a bad price at all. Hope Rajasthan gets him...he could develop so much under Warne...

Just shows how flawed the rankings are tbh. He's easily Bangladesh's best player but over the last 12 months he has taken 11 wickets against Zimbabwe, and played three games against a weak West Indies team. That counts for half of his wickets.

Ajantha Mendis has picked up a ton of wickets against Zimbabwe too, but his record over the last year is better then Shakib's.

and hows that his problem, which team he played against? the fact is he performed.

you just need to stop posting on Bangladesh related threads if you are gona complain in all of em. its just getting fliping annoying. and i am not even joking right now.

and if you are gona compare him with Mendis then you should go check his most recent performence. this ranking updates after every match. and recently Mendis hasnt done impressive (sence Bangladesh tour) . unlike beginning of his career

:crying

Go have a cry. I've said for years the ICC rankings are a joke, this has nothing to do with Bangladesh. Over the past year Shakib is the 9th top wicket taker in ODI cricket, Mendis is first. Just how is Mendis not even rated in the top three is beyond me.

again MOST RECENT PERFORMENCE!!

dude just shut up...and stop replaying to my posts..i dont even feel like arguing with you any more

everyone gets to play the week teams and if you look at the career highest points then you notice that shakibs 703 points is about 50 points short of a large number of players that have had fairly long careers.

zaheer kahns best ever is 700, vettori's 790, andersons is 689 (reached while playing bangladesh) as far as I can see only lee, bracken, murali and vaas in the top 100 have ever broken 800. All the teams play the minnows, bangladesh playing zimbabwe is just their equivalent of everyone else playing bangladesh. so I can't see how anyone can complain about this.

there seems to be great dissatisfaction whenever players take apart weaker teams like they should be expected to yet are largely tolerant of other failing against them providing they played better against the harder teams.

Yes but Shakib hasn't been one of the best bowlers over the past year, and if Vettori is still in the top five I guess that's how it works.

well, that would be a complaint about the timeframe of the rankings. which I agree can get a bit ridiculous, moyo sat in the top 10 for ages even when pakistan weren't playing and he'd quit the team. there's protecting your ranking and just being silly.

however, it still doesn't take away from the fact that over the however long it's calculated and however many matches that shakib has justifiably been the 2nd best player in that time.

Over what time though. Since the start of this year Shakib has picked up 15 wickets at 17, that sounds good I know. But during that time he has played Zimbabwe five times, and the West Indies three times. He's only played twice against Sri Lanka during that period.

Why isn't Ray Price rated higher if we are only going on stats alone, he's taken more wickets then Shakib this year and pretty much played the same teams. (Kenya would probably be weaker then the Windies C team though).

obviously, I don't the intricacies but if you change it to the last year, and not just this year (cause rankings aren't reset on the 1st of jan) shakib stands up a lot better (and include australia, new zealand and sri lanka) though yeah, I'm a bit lost as to why mendis isn't higher.

maybe they are weighted to that you get more points for teams rated higher than you, thus shakib would get more than the others when he does well against good opposition.

or maybe it's a match by match thing and you get points after each match rather than overall (which I think could well be the case) and shakib hasn't really been tonked about by anyone, only one instance of an economy over 5 in the last year and he took 2-38 that match. mendis though he's had some ridiculously good performances has also taken some hammerings.

dunno, but looking at his stats, 26 wickets at 22.00, economy at 3.39 I can't say he doesn't deserve his placing. he wouldn't be the player to make me want to change the rankings.
