South African Tour of India 2010

Well I have been watching Tendulkar's innings this year, and he is VERY lucky to be dismissed only once playing a similar shot.

Can't you remember balls flying just past the stumps after deviating from his bat/gloves/pads?

I haven't seen him bat forever, and I don't know if it is a good shot for him or not. But one thing is certain, his execution of that shot has been bad.

The paddle sweep is a shot that Sachin pretty much invented, or at least brought back in this generation. His execution of the shot is usually pretty good. Which is why the dismissal has been termed a "freak dismissal". You don't expect a ball to normally hit your thigh pad, hit your elbow guard, do some other nonsense, and eventually ricochet onto the stumps. If someone actually predicts something like that to happen, they can contribute some defining knowledge to quantum physics.

While it seems like the ball is just missing the stumps, etc., you have to keep in mind the physics of the situation. If the ball isn't targeted on the stumps in the first place, by playing the angles you actually drastically reduce the chance of it hitting the stumps. Since the ball is pitching outside leg, you can pretty much cover the line with your body and hence play a pretty safe shot, as long as you prevent any edges from occurring.

Finally, you say:

He almost got bowled about 10 times by Shakib in the Bangladesh series playing exactly the same shot.

And in this Test, he was lucky to be out on his 4th or 5th failed attempt at that shot.
This very quote demonstrates what a freak dismissal it was. It seems like he could have been out any time, but the physics of the situation makes it relatively impossible. Which is exactly why it has been described as a freak dismissal.

But that's the point, a sweep shot does not make you cover the stumps as you rotate around your front foot, opening the gap.

He should have played the leg glance, he is superb with that shot. Or even the forceful flick on the on-side.

I'm not arguing that he is doing his job in the team. I'm just refuting the claim that was made that Harris will do even better if there is a spinning pitch on the basis of his performance in the first match, unless his role in the team changes spectacularly in the next two days.

Isn't there a restriction against negative bowling? From the ICC rulebook, Law 25.1:

The rule applies if the batsmen can't hit the ball or the ball isn't hitting their pads. Harris wasn't bowling wide enough for that rule to apply. Giles used to employ similiar tactics at times and never saw him getting warned by the umpires so what harry is doing is perfectly legal.

Smith doubtfull for the second test. Got hit in training. No fracture just strained ligaments. Still think he will play thought.

Yeah read that too...last thing we need is for him to be out.He didnt score many in the first game but we need his presence and his captaincy was about as good as Ive seen it last time around.

Wonder how bad a strained ligament in your finger is? Never heard of such an injury in a finger...

Worse case they could just push him down the order and get Amla/De Villiers to open with Prince. He has to play, even if they are just to draw the match.

Yeah true...I mean he came out batting against the Aussies with a completely broken hand lol So I doubt some ligament strain will put him out of the game :P

He will be fine. Can't see him not playing because of a finger injury. I heard it swelled up, but they will probably have it fine by tomorrow. Just needs some ice is all.

It looks like Mark Boucher could also be out, if that happens we could be in big trouble, we only bought one back up batsman and no keeper so that will mean Peterson comes in and AB takes the gloves but that leaves us a batsman short.

Do you know where Nelspruit is? I suggest you look it up.

Smith confirmed on Saturday that what team management on Friday called "a ligament tear" was in fact a hairline fracture in the first joint of the little finger of his left hand. Cricket South Africa's hand specialist in Cape Town has described the fracture as "insignificant".

BTW SS means supersport :doh

We are going in with the idiotic two-spinner theory again, even when we know that this is`nt going to be a rank-turner. I don`t have much hopes on us getting 20 wickets with this 2 spinner attack which carries the liablity of a bowler in Mr.Turbanator.

Must say, I`m hoping secretly for the two spinner theory to fail time and again. I`m really frustrated with this conservative mindset by Dhoni. Did not expect this from him. The way we are approaching the strategy is "If its a game in the subcontinent we play 2 spinners, if its overseas, we play 3 seamers". All this irrespective of the form of the bowlers or the conditions.

Dhoni's captaincy is getting a bit...stale. He's not as fresh as he was when he first burst on the scene, his decisions seem far to conservative now.
