Sri Lanka tour of India

India got off to a great start this morning and it looked like the openers were going to set a really good platform before the targeted the weakness of the Indian Captain as he got out trying to hit his most productive shot- The pull shot to an extremely short delivery. Embuldeniya got an ideal start by dismissing Agarwal in his initial overs as India were suddenly in trouble at 80/2.

In my view Kohli looked like his usual self today and he played beautifully for his 45! Not much wrong did he do as it was another one of those instance where the brilliance of opposition came into play than anything else. I could just feel for the guy who is getting out to almost anything even when he has ensured caution.

Again, I am pleased with the way Vihari batted and acted as an ideal number 3. A bit disappointed on his dismissal but he certainly needs some more time to get into groove with his new role in the Indian team. I know he has often batted at 3 in domestic Circuit but playing a Test for India is a different ball game altogether.

We had another cold phase until Pant actually started attacking the Lankan bowlers (especially Embuldeniya). Shreyas missed a straight delivery but again, it happens facing the part-timers and will hope to see him score well later in this match. All credits to the Pant-Jadeja partnership! That phase where Pant raced from 50 to 96 in just 19 balls was one of the most entertaining part of the day. I literally shouted in anguish seeing his dismissal. Ashwin-Jadeja pair adding to Sri Lanka's misery.

At 357/6, in think India are well ahead already. I won't say this is a winning score as yet but will certainly give tough time to the Lankans.

For Sri Lanka, I think they lacked discipline as they nearly bowled all over the place rather than pitching it full on the rough area. I feel Ashwin-Jadeja will hit that area more often than not. So Sri Lanka is actually in trouble right now!! Honestly, Sri Lanka lacked that killer instinct. Very usual thing when they play India in India. This game is 70-30 in India's favour now.

That was a decent day. This is why Pant should always be in this test XI. Once again through his quick batting he has changed the complexion of the game. To be honest I am surprised to see Mayank bat ahead of Gill. Gill did nothing wrong before getting injured and now finds himself fighting for a place in the XI?

Hanuma Vihari is the perfect number 3. His batting style suits more at number 3 compared to 5. Good to see him start with a 50. I LOVEEE Test cricket, so good to see 2 test matches happening at the same time. Congratulations to Virat Kohli on his 100th cap as well as 8k runs. His 71st is coming and it is coming in the next 3 innings.

I would talk about this in a typical Mumbaikar way-

Kantal gaya hu yeh sunke :mad
(I am tired hearing this time and again)
Patience boy, he would be more frustrated (although he cannot show that). He has been playing good cricket, its just that things are not working for him. Everything Kohli used to touch batting wise would turn gold up until 2019, currently its silver.

My god! The hype around Shreyas Iyer is ridiculous! He has had one good T20 series against an attack that would probably be at best an average IPL attack and I feel like he's the current Viv Richards. The disrespect around Vihari over here. He's 28 and he is not pretty to watch. But he has earned this right to be part of the team. Gill not playing is just daft as far as I am concerned. He looks to me like the perfect no.3 in a test match.

No disregard to your post mate but I feel Shreyas Iyer batted beautifully on that gloomy Kanpur day where Jamieson & Southee were running through our batting order. He looks to be really mature in his approach and does show a lot of calmness & confidence as a batter. I think he has to bat where Rahane used to play.

Funny that the general noise around here seems to be over the places of the two highest run-scorers for India in today's game.

Vihari should be in the side for awhile now. Wonder what else the bloke must do to convince everyone. I have my reservations regarding Shreyas given how exploitable his short ball weakness can be but he will continue to be a force to be reckoned with on Indian pitches with his mastery of spin and his ability to score quickly. Gill's position seems to be a bit weird, shouldn't he be ahead of Mayank as pointed out? My stance on him has been pretty clear as the bloke should have been in the Indian side ages ago when he looked like he couldn't make a mistake. Instead we've allowed one of our brightest potential talents to stagnate for no reason.

On Vihari, Gill and Iyer, I am of the opinion that Gill should be opening not Mayank. Mayank was out of the XI for a reason. Gill was our opener before he got injured and now that he is back he should be playing ahead of Mayank.

Vihari has done nothing wrong. His place should not be up for even debate. I think he is the perfect number 3 to replace our ex brick Cheteshwar Pujara. Shreyas Iyer where he is currently batting is good. I have no idea why some people think there is a hype around him. In fact its completely opposite. Shreyas Iyer has not been given a consistent opportunity for way too long now. He is supposed to be our number 4 in ODI's, Rohit has already said SKY would be preferred over him in T20's. What has he done wrong to be not hype around?

These are the same people who were hyping KL Rahul when he was horribly out of form and singing praises on his 1 or 2 innings he played years ago.

Also with Sharma leading it absolutely means Gill will never be opening. KL will come into the side once he is fit for Mayank. So basically its a battle between Gill and Iyer.

Vihari's spot in the side is pretty fair. Been around the team for four years while never getting a consistent run in the team. Need to have a Pujara-esqe player in that top three for Test matches anyway, and Vihari played that role well today. Mayank still sealed his spot in the lineup today based on that hundred he scored a few series ago. Gill's been hard done by, but with the inconsistency of Rahul and Mayank there's a chance he might not need to wait that long to push for a permanent spot. Sure Rahul's scored three hundreds abroad but a prolonged inconsistent run could always see him benched when there's a plethora of good opening options.

Are you sure that fan bois will like KL being dropped if he is out of form? Are you sure the dem bois will be OK with KL being out who is our so called future captain?

Completely forgot that he was vice-captain. In that case, it looks like Gill will be on the bench for a while and be a backup batsman in the squad.
