Super 8: 16th Match India v WI

Care to explain his bowling average of 38 outside NZ then?

Like I said he doesn’t get big wicket hauls like Warne or Murali but he gets the vital wickets, but his much better than Panesar or Swann!

His best Spin bowler we have. Its not easy finding a good spin bowler in NZ and same for South Africa. Who knows if he played somewhere else in the world he could have been top notch, but he certainly isn’t overrated. Maybe his bowling of late hasn't been as good but I believe that is the pressure from being a captain

Care to point out where I said Swann's a better Test bowler than Vettori? I didn't, I said he's the best of Panesar, Boje and him. Swann's not a better Test bowler yet, but he could be in a year when he's played a good few games. Vettori is not a class Test bowler

I thought you had lumped Vettori in with that group. But what has Swann shown in his brief career to show that one day he might be a test class spin bowler. He has only played in India, and the only other team he has played are the West Indies. What ever he has done in those games doesn?t really prove much.

Not too many of them, but I have seen Gayle bat, and how you can say he's good against spin is beyond me. His lack of footwork doesn't find him out too often against seam, unless the ball's moving, but against spinners his foot movement is often poor. I don't need to have seen every single one of Gayle's innings to know he's not a great player of spin. I've watched enough of him to make a judgement, and have the benefit of the statistical sway

Howsie added 2 Minutes and 47 Seconds later...

Most New Zealand fans will agree Vettori isn't a world class test spinner.

That's good. If you've got no real comeback to an argument just cop out and post a smiley. Nice work (Y).

As for Swann. I don't see how wickets against West Indies just don't count. He's looked very, very dangerous and managed to get the wickets of the better Windies players. He's very good at bowling to left handers, and his drift and turn will make him a handful for most international players. I've been incredibly impressed with him. He might not become a class spinner but there's a chance he could. Have to wait and see, but like NZ and Vettori he's the best we've got.

Everyone has their own opinion

I think the ashes series will decide how good Swann is. If he keeps getting wickets like he has been then thats great for England

I?ve watched Gayle bat a lot and I?ve rarely seen a spinner trouble him, his footwork might not be the best but he makes up for it with a very good eye and fast hands. Pretty much your whole argument is based on stats, and stats don?t always tell the whole picture.

Vettori has a test average of 26 against them, I think that's why we shoudln't
read too much into his test career right now.

To beat West Indies, India needs to make different strategy.

The best way to stop Chris Gayle is to bring spinners in the 3rd or 4th over itself. Gayle has been struggled in the IPL-2 against spinners.

Raina should bat at no. 3 and Yuvraj, Yusuf and MSD will follow. MSD has so far came at no. 3 and struggled. Raina has made 434 runs in IPL-2 at no. 3.

Irfan should be sit out and Praveen Kumar should get a chance.

I think this is India V WI thread :p

Thing is though, I'm not basing my argument purely on stats. I've had the chance to see alot of Chris Gayle in the last couple of years, with alot of the Windies' games on Sky, and can take into consideration what I've seen of him, and the statistical backing. His technique just isn't good enough to be a really good player of spin. You also can't get away from the fact that he's not scored a Test hundred against Warne, Muralitharan or Kumble, easily the 3 most dominant spinners of the era.

If Gayle gets out early India will win.

Come on India tonight. If India lose, they will be doubly powerful on Sunday.

If Dhoni wins toss he will bat first and if Gayle wins he will bowl first. So Im ready to see India bat. Finished my dinner early.

Well I realise you have seen quite a lot of the West Indies over the last 2-3 years, but just because he didn?t score a century against a team with Warne, Muralitharan or Kumble in it that doesn?t make him a poor player of spin.

So if scoring runs against the best spinners in the world doesn't make you a good player of spin then what does? Surely not scoring runs against the best and having a poor technique just about proves he's not a good player of spin doesn't it? =/

Did anyone just see one of Praveen Kumar's warm up deliveries? :laugh Was slow and went miles down the leg-side. The bloke with the gloves on didn't get anywhere near it. Can see why he's not in the XI if he's practising like that!

Well how many test matches has he played against those three.

Rohit Sharma will get out within the first two overs.
