@RPHKR: You know to read Tamil? What does it say?

Is it about the rumored rift between Murugadoss and Vijay, over issues like the film's release date? Murugadoss and Vijay comprehensively refutted it in a recent radio mirchi interview where Vijay called up Murugadoss and talked to him very jokingly and he responded to an article on Kumudham which talked about the rift between him and Murugadoss and he said "Better luck next time" (to the Kumudham reporters).

@RPHKR: You know to read Tamil? What does it say?

Lol mate, I'm a Tamil. Don't you know to read Tamil?
It says Thuppakki was initially under S.A.Chandrasekhar's production(Vijay's father).
AR. Murugadoss demanded more salary it seems, so SAC was unhappy, he stated that the project would go on loss. ARM was angried, then he called Vijay. This caused an arguement between SAC and Vijay. Finally, SAC pulled out.

Then Thotta Dharani(art director) claimed to produce. He said that the project shouldn't exceed the budget, if it does then the director should use his own money. So most of the scenes in Mumbai were shot without Director's complete satisfaction.(Eno thano nu eduthaangalam)

Issue raised when Vijay interpreted in a scene. He want it in his way. Vijay and ARM argued but it was finally put off by intervention of Santhosh Sivan.

@Sai - Can you post a review here(as a neutral please :D) after watching the movie?

^Simple. SAC was initially the producer. But he pulled out when AR Murugadoss demanded more salary.

Then came in Thotta Dharani. He said that the project shouldn't exceed the budget. If it does, the director should utilize his own money. So most of scenes in Mumbai were shot without the satisfaction of the director.

One time Vijay interfered in a shot, he wanted it in 'his way'. This created an arguement between the director and him. At last it was put off by the intervention of Santhosh Sivan.

I can speak Tamil and understand Tamil, but I don't know to read and write Tamil. My second language in school was Hindi (since my dad had a transferrable job). In Tamil Nadu schools, Tamil is not compulsory.

It seems to be the very same article which Murugadoss and Vijay responded to in the recent Radio Mirchi interview. Murugadoss said "Kumudham writers cinema kku kadhai ezhudha pogalam"....:D Lot of things in the article seems to be made up. Vijay never argues with SAC. I know that for a fact because one of my very close friend has very close connection with Vijay's Rasigar Mandram. SAC handles almost all of Vijay's work except the actual 'acting in the film'. SAC would change the director if he can't pay more money, but won't give the project to someone else just because of this. I am pretty sure the project changed hands because of luck factor (none of SAC/Vijay's home productions have worked; their last 'Aathi' was a huge disaster).

Dont worry Puli! When it comes to Vijay, my review will be neutral. I am not the same die hard Vijay fan I used to be. I am a Rajnikanth fan only right now. I like Surya more, but even his movies, I watch neutrally.

Thuppakki Review

This film should definitely rank as one of the most memorable ones in Vijay's career. He has finally done a film thats completely different from his usual formula, and yet a film that is commercial and entertaining in every way possible. He has rebuilt himself for this movie completely. Beefed up body, great costumes and highly attractive looking. And he is very comfortable with the English and Hindi lingo which he has to speak a lot in the film. Since he is shown as a Tamizhan living in Mumbai, the lingo suits perfectly with the setting.

The actual hero of the film is Murugadoss and the editor Sreekar Prasad along with Santosh Sivan, who make the film a treat to watch on the big screen. Murugadoss conjures up a very exciting screenplay where he doesn't let the audience breathe. He almost plays a game of chess on the big screen. Thuppakki was like watching a game of chess, where some of the moves were predictable and some of them were unpredictable. And all the while, you had glamour and comedy in huge dollops. Sreekar Prasad adds to the racy part in such breathtaking fashion. And Santosh's camera is a treat, especially the Vennilave song (KV Anand style locations in Sivan's camera, OMG!!!). The film's comedy is a major highlight. The bickering between Vijay and Kajal, and the additional comedy by Sathyan and Jayaram are a riot!

On the negative side, Vidyut Jamwal could have gotten a more meatier role. Whatever role he had, he was awesome and mean... He deserved better! And the song picturisations were nothing to rave about, although Harris puts in a huge improvement on the BGM part where he adds to the thrill of the film. "Google Google" is the only standout song in the film. The rest are decent to below average. One or two logic loopholes, but not major ones (depends on the expectation of detail to the viewer).

OVERALL: A film worth watching once for any Tamil cinema audience. For a Vijay fan, this is a huge Diwali treat. They are going to celebrate this film for years to come! I will go with 4.3/5 for this one!

My dad seems to have loved it(he's a bit of a Vijay fan, likes Rajini as well) and his synopsis seems very similar to that of yours that this isn't your ordinary Vijay film built around his rather tiresome formula.

Seriously, I stand in line(for hours) for all of his crappy movies in recent times(Azhagiya Tamil Magan, Kuruvi, Villu, Vettaikaaran and let's not forget Sura :p) and I miss out on what most are calling his best since Pokkiri? FML man, FML.

EDIT: Seeking for redemption, there better be a weekend show or else...

Where do you live? Here for us, we have shows for 7 days. This is Vijay's biggest release in USA. I am already planning a 2nd watch (maybe a third too if time permits)

Jacksonville, FL. We usually only have 1 show(the premiere) and it's almost always done by the Tamil Mandram, but last night we had 2 shows one at 6 and one at 9, I missed both. :(
