The All-Time One-Day Draft

:saf: :bat: Colin Bland
That is an absolutely stonking selection

I have updated my last pick to Aubrey Faulkner instead of Polly Umrigar
This is a really difficult call; I've only just come online and having to have a proper think about this is very tricky. On the one hand, I do not like people going back and changing their picks but on the other, Faulkner was still available.

Therefore, I have a compromise:
- I will grant you the change in players as a one-off exception, but in order that it doesn't give too much of an advantage I shall push your next pick by five places. This seems like a fair balance between allowing the fun to continue and not just setting a precedent for people retconning their picks.

My next pick will be my pre ODI pick - Hedley Verity.

Well, this is my only pick for another entire round, so best make it count.

:eng: :bwl: Sydney Barnes

Test stats
- 189 wickets @ 16.43 (econ: 2.36, 24 5WI, best 9/103) in 27 matches
First-class stats - 719 wickets @ 17.09 (econ: 2.34, 68 5WI, best 9/103) in 133 matches

There's a reason I didn't go after Warne or Saqlain or any of the ODI spinners at this early stage: because nobody else was going for Sydney Barnes and I felt fairly sure I'd be able to steal him as mid-draft pick. Sure enough, here we are; many people view Sydney Barnes as cricket's greatest bowler, but he is also the most unique. There have only been three notable bowlers who have been able to bowl spin at the pace of a fast bowler and retain control: Barnes, Bob Appleyard and Mustafizur Rahman. Barnes is unique among them though in that he was able to do it without his shoulder trying to part company with the rest of his body. Barnes also thought to preserve the mystery of his variations by carrying the ball to the wicket in his non-bowling hand, transferring it at the last possible moment: the first bowler I know of who did this.

Barnes was also ahead of his time in liking to get paid for his efforts. He therefore played the overwhelming majority of his cricket for Staffordshire (1,441 wickets @ 8.15 with best match figures of 14 for 13 against Cheshire) and in the Lancashire League (4,069 wickets @ 6.03). He continued playing both for Staffordshire and in league cricket until into his sixties with little decline in results even as his pace slowed down. Despite a reputation for ruthlessness on the field, he was considered a gentleman off it - when his closest friend Wilfred Rhodes became blind in his old age, a nonagenarian Barnes would accompany him everywhere - leading him to his preferred bench at Lord's or any other ground and describing the play as it unfolded.

Since I need a batting all rounder now, I will go for Greg Chappell.

Am I just allowed to waltz in and pick the bloke who wrote the handbook on modern dynamic ODI batting and strike rotation? Oh boy, it does sound surreal that after over a hundred picks, :aus: :bat: Dean Jones remains unpicked. As a batsman, he was arguably the most consistent ODI batsman of his time and an instrumental figure in his side’s surprise ODI World Cup victory in 1987. His peak ODI rating remains the fifth highest in the history of ODIs and he was also fifth on the overall runs list when he retired, with only the legendary Viv faring better in terms of consistency.

Jones was a master strategist knowing which fielders to take on easily and where the gaps were at all times. He knew when to accelerate as shown by most of his top scores being well above the average strike-rate of 73 of his time and he could be relied on to convert his starts into significant scores at an alarmingly consistent rate. As a fielder, he was good and preferred the outfield, adding to my side’s very fine cabal of fielders.

In my side Jones will be the primary accumulator at three. A fairly clear cut role for the great man will be present and he shall be relied on to provide a fifty plus score regularly by rotating strike primarily and playing risk free cricket. Let the other hitters take care of boosting the scoring rate, Deano will be the bedrock upon which this side’s batting lineup shall be built.

@Yash.

So why am I picking him? because he is a World Cup winning associate.

He made his ODI debut just 3 days before Sri Lanka played their first ever test match.
I'm afraid he would not count as such - Sri Lanka were granted Full Membership in 1981 and Arjuna's ODI debut was in 1982.

If this would inform a change to your pick then there will be no penalty
