Story The Great Australian Rebuild | BBL | In the form of his life.

Injuries hit both teams on the eve of Canberra test.

Sri Lanka will be forced to overhaul their bowling attack completely, after all 3 of their starting quicks from the first test suffered injury setbacks this week. Suranga Lakmal has suffered a back injury, Lahiru Kumara has injured his hamstring and Dusthmantha Chameera has had an injury to his ankle. Chamika Karunaratne has been added to the Sri Lankan squad and almost certain to make his test debut in Canberra. With Vishwa Fernando and Kasun Rajitha the only other quicks on the tour, if Sri Lanka go in with 3 frontline quicks to this test match, they will have a combined 5 test matches of experience.

"It's been a tough week for our team. Many injuries in the squad, but it gives an exciting chance to some bowlers who may not have expected to play on this tour - we have full faith in them and I'm really excited to lead this bowling attack. We've taken plenty of confidence from the test in Brisbane, but we want to go one better and win this test," Dinesh Chandimal said speaking to the media today.

Dinesh Chandimal spoke to the media today, revealing the injuries in the squad.

Australia have also made 2 changes to their squad, with Matthew Wade suffering a finger injury in training yesterday morning. Wade was pivotal in Australia's 3 run win a few days ago, with a well made 58 in the 2nd innings. Peter Handscomb will be taking the gloves in the 2nd test as Australia have opted not to add another keeper to the squad.

Matthew Wade will miss the 2nd test with a finger injury.

"It's disappointing for Wadey, obviously he has been in good form this summer and keeping really well. It's only a minor injury, but we would rather see him miss this [test] then risk aggravating the injury anymore." White said today.

"That is the beauty of having someone like Peter in the team, we don't have to change too much and the keeping situation is sorted - at this stage he will still be batting 3, and we'll look to fill the number 7 position in the team."

Peter Siddle who was recalled to the squad to cover for Jhye Richardson has also been released from the squad, with Marcus Stoinis and Marnus Labuschagne joining the Australian squad for Canberra. This is the second time Stoinis has featured in the Australian test squad and with the apparent shunning of Mitchell Marsh in recent squad selections, he may be likely to feature in test cricket very soon.

Travis Head silenced all of his doubters with a magnificent hundred on day 1. Dominating the Sri Lankan attack as Australia reversed their poor start from the last test, notching up 406 in just over 100 overs. A maiden test half century for the recalled Kurtis Patterson, as well as 40's from Handscomb and Maxwell ensured the Aussie attack had plenty to bowl at. Kasun Rajitha made the most of his return to the Sri Lankan side with 4 wickets, while the spin of Perera and de Silva picked up 3 a piece.

Sri Lanka's batting was nothing to be disappointed with, but the Australian attack led by James Pattinson was simply too good as they knocked the Sri Lankans over for 265. Half centuries from de Silva and Karunaratne the highlights of the innings, while the wickets were shared around for the Australian attack. A lead of 141 for the Australians as they head into the 2nd innings.

Chamika Karunaratne rips through Australia on debut! After going wicketless in his first test bowling innings, he more than made up for it with a brilliant 5 wicket haul in the 2nd. Dhananjaya de Silva with 3 wickets taking his tally to 6 for the match, with Australia bowled out for just 229. Skipper Cameron White and centurion from the first innings Travis Head would make blistering half centuries, but it didn't stop the Sri Lankans from bowling Australia out for another modest total. 370 to win for Sri Lanka in the 4th innings.

Australia claim the match and the series 2-0 after James Pattinson claims his first test 5 wicket haul in over 3 years. A comfortable victory in the end, despite a fight from the Sri Lankan top order, with 50's to Chandimal and Mendis, it just wasn't enough. Pattinson's 8 wickets across the match saw him take player of the match, and after taking 13 wickets across the 2 matches, he was also adjudged player of the series. One hell of a comeback to test cricket.

Callum Ferguson continues his incredible form in the tournament. A uncharacteristically brutal knock, finishing 92*, which included scoring 52 runs in the last 3 overs of the Thunder innings. The Strikers were never in the hunt, losing constant wickets throughout their innings, never allowing them to reign in the run rate.

Code:
Sydney Thunder 191/8 20.0 overs
Brisbane Heat 165/9 20.0 overs

Result: Sydney Thunder won by 26 runs!
Man of the match: Callum Ferguson
