Chelsea dominate as Drogba shines
Drogba celebrates his second.
Didier Drogba was the Man Of The Match and stole the show with two goals against Wigan away from home in the Premiership clash. Chelsea, as expected, won the game with Drogba netting twice to seal the deal. Drogba opened the scoring with a stunning strike in the eighth minute and later on in the seventy eighth minute.
Chelsea went into this game with plenty of changes from their previous match. A complete re-do of the formation for Avram Grant's team was in order. He went out with a 2-3-1-2-2 formation. A very rare formation, using his tactics to the full. Joe Cole came in for Shaun Wright-Phillips, Claude Makélélé replaced the suspended Michael Essien and Ricardo Carvalho was bumped down to the bench in place of Alex. Andriy Shevchenko won his place back on the bench.
Wigan got the game underway from left to right but it wasn't until the eighth minute until either team had a chance. A throw in from Juliano Belletti went to Frank Lampard who controlled the ball perfectly. Lampard guided it on to Tommaso Rocchi who turned and played it on to Didier Drogba. Drogba took two wonderful touches before curling the ball into the top corner and putting Chelsea ahead.
Straight from the Wigan kick off, Tommaso Rocchi piled on the pressure on Titus Bramble. Rocchi tackled Bramble and continued with the ball. He was up against the keeper but Kirkland did enough to put it out of the goal and it was cleared for a throw in. Bramble limped off the field and received lengthy treatment after the tackle from Rocchi.
Marcus Bent almost equalised for Wigan. The ball came into the box and after some scrambling around, Bent's foot connected with the ball only to hit the post and go out for a goal kick to Chelsea.
Both teams continued to attack and had some chances but neither team were really looking that dominant. That was until the fourty fourth minute. Wigan attacked from the right wing with Antonio Valencia. His cross came in and Bent got a head on it. It was fantastically saved by Petr Cech and Cech did the double with the rebound.
The whistle blew for half time and Chelsea deservedly had the lead at the break. Wigan had some good chances however, the most notable one being at the end of the half with Marcus Bent. Avram Grant was the happier man though, especially since he had a formiddable bench with eager players to come on still.
Chelsea made one change at half time, which sent the fans into raptures. New signing Ricardo Quaresma put on his number twenty seven Chelsea shirt and ran onto the pitch. He replaced Joe Cole for the second half of the game.
After a boring start to the second half, Avram Grant made his final two changes to get his players motivated. Andriy Shevchenko came on for Tommaso Rocchi and Shaun Wright-Phillips for Florent Malouda. Neither had had a notable game but neither had been bad either.
Chelsea scored their second in the seventy eighth minute with Didier Drogba again. Frank Lampard touched the ball on from a free-kick to Drogba who piledrived the ball along the ground into the right corner. Drogba ran to the corner flag and celebrated his second goal of the game.
Chelsea continued to pile on the pressure to score a third goal but all chances were being blocked by Chris Kirkland. The whistle blew for full time and Chelsea had one their first Premiership game under Avram Grant. Didier Drogba worked his magic and ran Wigan ragged all game.
