Two men in the Championship... We're back!!!

Match Day 4 - All good things come to an end

We travel to Deepdale to play Preston, on the back of our fine win over my good mate Ben. So far we had managed to dominate each side and make sure we had plenty of chances. I was looking for more of the same here against a team that had only 2 points from the first 3 games. We made just one change from the team that played against Ipswich last Saturday, Michael McIndoe in for Marvin Elliot who fractured his wrist and would be out for some time. I was hoping for the partnership of Byfield and Showunmi to really cause Preston's defence havoc like it had done throughout the first 3 league games. Also, Ivan Sproule was back from the suspension he picked up last season at Hibs. He would start on the bench.

We never looked into the game. For the first time the season we just lacked quality all over the pitch. Nobody could produce any sort of magic to get us into the game. Whereas Preston had it flowing all through their players. They were hungry for a win, their first. Karl Hawley opened the scoring just 14 minutes in. A brilliant strike from the edge of the area, Adriano Basso having no chance. Chances came evenly, Basso making a good save low to his left from Ian Morris. The most Lonergan had to do was catch a simple header from Enoch Showumni. The score stayed the same as we went into the changing rooms at half-time.

A passionate team-talk was what was needed, but it seemed to make no difference as Preston came straight out and put the game beyond us. Hawley again showed that he was in prolific form, cracking a 25 yarder past Basso, who had no chance for the 2nd time in the game. Changes were made to try and up the anti, Vaskó and Christie replacing the two front men. Nothing changed and we had suffered our 1st defeat of the season. A poor showing against a side I fancied to beat. Still, 3 wins from 4 was more than I had expected and hopefully we could bounce back against Sheffield United at home next Saturday.

Unlucky there Trev. Like you said, all good things must come to an end. Hawley is a very good player against me every time, and Preston are one of those sides on FM that only perform well against you, same happened in my Coventry story, I think I lost 3-2 or something.

Great work trev and Ben, I'm really enjoying this.

Oh and that picture in your BBC report, it looks suspiciously like Joleon Lescott in the background! Never knew he played for Bristol City :p

Nah great work both of you.

Probably is, but the focus of the picture is on Karl Hawley. There's being picky, and then being ridiculous!

:p

Wolves dominate at Molineux

karlhenryrg1.jpg

Karl Henry was rewarded with a goal
Wolves pulled off a convincing win at home to Ipswich today, with the 3-0 score line reflecting the game as a whole. The game started well for Wolves, and they were 2-0 up at the interval. Goals from Andrew Keogh and Karl Henry gave the hosts a comfortable Half-Time lead.
Ipswich, however, had the first chance of the game, with Tommy Miller hitting the bottom of the post from a free-kick, but other than that, the Wolves goal was largely untroubled.
Andy Keogh latched onto a flick-on by Freddy Eastwood, and lashed in a crisp half-volley, leaving Alexander with no chance.
Recently-signed John-Joe O’ Toole then had to leave the pitch, the midfielder appearing to be suffering from exhaustion after only 35 minutes.
Tommy Smith later failed to properly deal with a long ball up the field, and Karl Henry, who ran the game, hit a sweet shot into the top corner, and got the goal his first half performance deserved.
Even at 2-0, Wolves looked to counter at every opportunity, using a free-kick inside their own box to set up an attack, with Smith again failing to sort out the long ball, leaving substitute Stephen Elliot to wrap up the game.
Ipswich boss Ben Manning was unavailable to comment, but his assistant Brian Klug gave his view on the game: “We are all disappointed with the result, quite obviously, and Ben is upset at the lack of desire shown by the players.”
Mick McCarthy was upbeat about his side’s performance, and singled out special praise for goalscorer Karl Henry: “Karl is a fantastic guy to have around the Club, and I was so pleased to see him score such a marvelous goal. Hopefully we can use this game as a springboard for bigger and better things this season.

Molineux, what a stadium! I played there once as a Gillingham player, but we were just pipped 2-1, with ex- Manchester United man Denis Irwin banging in a penalty in the 5th minute of injury time. I remember the game well; because it was the first game I experienced real hostility toward the home side?s own players when we were 0-1 up. I also remember chatting with Paul Ince throughout, where I asked him all about his time in the Premiership and with England. He was such a nice guy, ex-international and all that speaking to a lowly lower-league nobody.

ANYway, the game from our perspective was really quite atrocious, we never got going, and fair play to Wolves, they fully deserved the win. Quite how we are ever going to get anywhere in this league is beyond me with performances like that, and as I keep saying, we need to turn things around pretty sharpish.

I have to admit, at the start of this game I was beginning to doubt my ability as a manager, and the tactics I use, but, as I told myself, this is where reputations are made, how a gaffer deals with adversity, and I wanted a reputation!

The game itself was completely dominated by Mick?s side, and I had a quick chat with him during the second half, because that?s the kind of guy I am, nice and friendly, and always up for a laugh, Mick actually pointed out to me something behind the dugout. I won?t go into detail, but suffice to say a woman needed two season tickets!

I can?t have any complaints with the result, we mustered a pitiful number of shots at goal, and there just didn?t seem to be any desire in the players.

Quite what?s wrong with John-Joe I don?t know, he just seems to be constantly tired! I?ll have words.

Poor Tommy Smith was distraught after the game, he knows himself that he made a couple of mistakes, but he?s young, and as long as he learns from this, and keeps his chin up, I won?t have too many complaints.

Karl Henry scored a mint goal and I think Mick McCarthy was happier than the scorer himself was!

Ah well, things can only get better, eh?

Disaster Maney! Perhaps you can't manage :p Theres your answer to the story title :p

maney mate, i wish you luck and just hope you dont get sacked :p

trev good form and you are still looking good even after that 'hiccup'

If he gets sacked then we will carry on with whatever club he manages to get an offer from. Whichever poor club that may be :p

Blades slice 'City' apart

Bristol City 1-4 Sheffield United

billysharpue0.jpg

Billy Sharp finished it off from the spot

Sheffield United made it two losses from two for Bristol City as they run riot at Ashton Gate, beating the home side 4-1. Jonathan Stead scored two goals, and Michael Tonge and Billy Sharp got one each. Michael McIndoe scored for Bristol as they finished the game with 10 men, Jerel Ifil getting sent off in the 87th minute for a second booking.

Jonathan Stead opened the scoring just eight minutes in. A deflected shot by Billy Sharp landed in Stead's path as he knocked it past Adriano Basso and rolled it into the open net.

Stead made it 2-0 on 25 minutes. This time doing all the work himself, taking on the Bristol defence before belting it into the bottom right hand corner. This was Stead's 4th goal in the Championship and the second time he had scored two in a game.

Michael McIndoe pulled one back for Bristol six minutes before half-time. A free kick from Scott Murray firmly headed past Paddy Kenny to give Bristol a chance at half-time.

Michael Tonge lashed home a free kick laid off by Stead to make the win almost secure in the 67th minute. Seven minutes later it was game over when Jerel Ifil fouled Stead in the box to pick up his first yellow. Billy Sharp stepped up and blasted it into the net to give his side the three points.

Things got worse for Bristol City as Jerel Ifil tripped up Keith Gillespie, referee Mike Russell sending the Bristol defender on his way with a second yellow. Lee Johnson also damaged his heel during the game. The midfielder is expected to be out for 2 weeks.

Bryan Robson had little to say after the match, calling the victory a deserved one based on their performance. "Great result. Bristol City have shown they are a good side, I'm just glad we put in the performance to beat them. We deserved it today, and it's a credit to the lads hard work in training."

Jack Teague was unavailable for comments, but assistant manager Keith Millen revealed that Teague was very disappointed in the way his side crumbled. "Jack and I are disappointed with today's performance. We crumbled after Lee (Johnson) went off. We need to re-capture our form that we had at the start of the season, but we are not too worried."
