Jack Teague - Bristol City Manager - Blog Match Day 5 - Ouch, that hurts...
We needed a victory to stay in the top places after out loss at Deepdale to Preston. The visitors today were Sheffield United, who had a strong side and have been tipped to finish in a play-off spot. We would need to perform well and work hard today if we were to get the three points we were after. There was just the one change, McCombe replacing Vaskó at the back.
Things started badly, Jonathan Stead getting to a deflected shot from Billy Sharp before Basso and scoring easily to make it 1-nil. We knew it would be tough from there and it got a whole lot tougher on 25 minutes. Stead scoring his second to double their lead. But we fought back and managed to reduce the deficit to one, Michael McIndoe heading into the net just before half-time.
Changes were made, a triple substitution on 62 minutes. One was forced due to Lee Johnson sustaining a heel injury, who was replaced by David Noble. Christie and Ifil came on to freshen things up. Well it certainly did freshen things up, unfortunately it was for Sheffield, who regained their two goal cushion with a fine strike from Michael Tonge. Jerel Ifil then made his first mistake of two, bringing down Stead in the box and receiving a yellow for his troubles. Sharp slotted away the penalty to put the game beyond us. The nail was placed in the coffin three minutes from time. A badly timed tackle from Ifil earned him a second yellow and was sent on his way.
A bad day at Ashton Gate, but it had to come at some point. The most disappointing thing of all was that we let them have 30, yes 30, shots on goal. The defence needed to tighten a whole lot more if we were to get back to winning ways! Hopefully we would do that away at struggler's Colchester United...
Ipswich Town today ended their poor run to start the season, beating Barnsley 2-1 at Portman Road. Pablo Cou?ago was the man who bagged both goals, but Ipswich had their goalkeeper Neil Alexander to thank for the three-points.
The game started brightly, with Cou?ago going close almost straight from the kick-off, blazing over having been picked out by John-Joe O?Toole. However, it was The Tykes who hit the back of the net first.
Tommy Smith missed a header, and Miguel Mostto was on hand to bury the ball, but the referee had already blown for a foul. Barnsley again pressed three minutes later, forcing Alexander into two good saves in two minutes.
Barnsley pressed even further, trying to force the opening goal, but it was Ipswich who struck first, Tommy Miller bravely winning the ball before putting Cou?ago in with a slide-rule pass, leaving him with no choice but to slip the ball past the keeper.
Half time saw one change to the sides, John-Joe O?Toole again failing to complete a game for his new side, youngster Ed Upson taking his place.
Four minutes after the break, Barnsley deservedly equalised, Mostto capitalising on a delightful through-ball from Kim Christensen and putting the ball into the back of the net.
Ipswich were quite fortunate to take the lead, Cou?ago looked to have been offside when the ball was played, but the goal stood and Ipswich held on for the three points.
Simon Davey refused to be drawn on the issue of the goal, or the ?goal? that his side scored, commenting instead on the performance of his team: ?We were outstanding today; I think we are very unlucky not to be leaving here with at least a point. We dominated from start to finish, but in the end, it?s the goals that count and they beat us.?
Ben Manning was understandably pleased: ?We didn?t play well, and I think the referee may have helped us, but to be honest with you, I don?t care! We are off the mark and we will build on this! The lads are all exhausted, and that is an indication of how much they put into this game.?
At Blummin' last! Well done Ben, you kept the sides confidence up and got what your deseve. Let's bring the beers out and party.
Good report mate, keep it up!
It has you way down in a place you don?t want to be and BAM! One win and you?re up there in the clouds without a care!
Pablo Cou?ago is a beast! Neil Alexander is a beast! I am a frickin? beast!
Barnsley were on top of us for 90 minutes, make no bones about it, but it?s all about the tallies in the goal column and we had 2, they only had one! Let?s all just stop for a second and look at this, Ipswich Town 2 ? 1 Barnsley Magic, absolute magic!
I would love to big myself up, but as Jack didn?t do it when he won, I won?t. 3 points takes us up to the giddy heights of 22nd, but only on goal difference! We aren?t relegated yet!
I said last game I don?t know what is up with John-Joe and that I?d have a chat with him, I have to admit, I forgot, and he came off at half time again. Gives Ed Upson some more experience at this level, and this will help him mature and fulfil his destiny and fill Owen?s empty chasm which has been left.
The referee, Mr. Webster is now on my Christmas card list, ruling out one of their perfectly good goals, and allowing our perfectly-offside goal. I had a chat with Simon, and offered my apologies for being openly delighted, but he understood, and that was that.
Bristol City won away at Colchester United 3-2 tonight, Jack Teague showing why he won 'Manager of the Month' last month with a piece of tactical brilliance. Bristol City led by two goals before a second half revival almost saw Colchester grab a vital point. It wasn't to be as super sub Tamas Vask? was sent up-front instead of his usual centre back position, scoring the winner three minutes from time.
Jamie McCombe was the first to get on the score sheet, putting Bristol one up on nine minutes. McIndoe swung in a corner for McCombe to use his height and head it past Gerken in the Colchester goal.
McIndoe was again provider for City's second, this time Byfield netting from seven yards out. A fantastic cross by McIndoe was controlled by Byfield and lashed home to double their lead.
Colchester got back in it after half-time thanks to a superb strike from the edge of the box by Mark Yeates. A turning shot flew past Basso and gave Colchester a hope of getting something from the game.
Those hopes became reality as another long range strike ended up in the back of the net. This time a cleared free kick fell to Danny Granville who drilled it low past Basso. There was huge complaints from the Bristol players as it seems Yeates blocked Basso's view in an offside position.
With time running out, Jack Teague brought on big, Hungarian defender Tamas Vask? up-front for David Noble. Two minutes later Vask? became the winning goal scorer. Sproule's shot was blocked but fell to Christie in the box, who then laid it off for Vask? who finished the job. Christie appeared to be in an offside position, but Bristol will feel it made up for the earlier decision.
The bad news for Bristol City was that Enoch Showunmi broke a rib during the game and will be out for at least a month.
Jack Teague played down his decision to bring on Tamas Vask?. "I felt there needed to be a change so I made a bold one. It paid off. I'm just happy we got the three points we desperately wanted. Hopefully we will start to tighten the screw now and push for that top spot again."
Colchester boss Geraint Williams declined to speak to the media, his assistant Micky Adams taking up the job of interviewee. "Poor again. One point from six games is unacceptable. We need to pick it up and we need to pick it up fast. Myself and Geraint are very disappointed with how things are going, although we know it will improve."

Let me guess, you accidentally played Vasko up top after pressing the wrong button? I did that with Lee Naylor at Celtic once while I was messing about, and he scored 2 and then went off injured after about 30 mins!
I purposefully put him up front. I changed things to long ball and him as target man, due to his huge build. Played a fast tempo to try and get the result. Absolute stroke of genius if I do say so myself!
Ipswich Town battled to a 1-0 win at Deepdale this afternoon, thanks to a superb goal from Manchester United loanee Fraizer Campbell. The afternoon was not so good for Bjorn Runstrom, however, as he was sent off for a second bookable offence.
The game started relatively slowly, the game?s first chance falling to Runstrom who plundered a shot straight at Andy Lonergan from a distance.
The first half passed without any real incident, only half-chances falling to either side, neither keeper really troubled. Twice during the first half, Rob van Boekel received treatment for knocks, appearing to run the first one off, but the second forced him off at half time, making way for the scorer Campbell, who joined Runstrom up front.
On 50 minutes, Fraizer Campbell latched onto a clearance by Jason De Vos, getting in behind the defence, before hitting a sumptuous chip into the net from 25 yards. It was a special goal, and his pace had no doubt helped him to work the chance.
Having been earlier booked for a trip on Liam Chilvers, Bjorn Runstrom inexplicably pushed Maw?n? and received his marching orders from Darren Drysdale, who had a good game.
Preston carved out five more opportunities, but could not find a way past Scot Neil Alexander, and in the end, Ipswich clung onto the lead and picked up the three points.
Ipswich boss Ben Manning gave his interview in his usual candid style, beaming: ?We?re on a roll! Watch out Watford, that title isn?t yours just yet!
?The boys gave a fantastic performance today, ground out the win, and it was nice to see us having four shots on target, which is about four more than we normally get!
"Sir Alex has been on the phone to me, asking 'When are you going to play my lad?!' So I thought I would give him a game!"
Jack Teague - Bristol City Manager - Blog Match Day 6 - I love being good!
Two bad losses had stuck us right back down the table. Our dream start was starting to fade away. We needed a revival and fast. Colchester looked the perfect side to re-gain our for against. They were languishing with one point from five games, and we hoped to capitalise on this. There were a few changes from the game against Sheffield United. The injured Lee Johnson was replaced by David Noble, Ivan Sproule coming in for Brian Wilson, who also was injured in the last game.
We found ourselves exactly where we wanted to be after nine minutes, in front. Jamie McCombe grabbing his first goal of the season with a well directed header. Darren Byfield scored his first in three games, picking up McIndoe's cross and netting it past Gerken. Things looked great heading into half-time.
Enoch Showunmi then had to come off with a broken rib, Lee Trundle his replacement. Things took a turn for the worse as our lead went from two to one. Mark Yeates drilled a well placed shot from the edge of the area into the back of the net. 17 minutes later we found ourselves back at square one. Danny Granville going one better than Yeates, scoring from further out. To my astonishment the goal was allowed to stand, apart from the fact that Yeates was standing offside in front of Basso. I let the fourth official know how I felt about the decision. I brought on Christie for Murray.
Time was running out and so I took a last throw of the dice. Big Tamas Vaskó was told to go up-front, and the team to play quick football and use the long ball to aim for Tamas. It worked as he got the winner two minutes after coming on. A good move finished with Vaskó knocking it home from 10 yards. Although there were claims of offside, as far as I was concerned it had levelled itself out. We had won away, a fine result and my tactics had paid off. Now to move back up that table...
