Two men in the Championship... We're back!!!

Haven't been on here for a while, so I thought I'd put in a comment! Terrible result for City there trev, 4-1 to a small club like Plymouth! :p So, the tables have turned :p

Tables are up at end of each month in the review. So that means one more game and it will be up :)

I hope to get the blog done tonight, and then maybe another game either tonight or tomorrow!

Match Day 7 - Defensive woes

After our late win against Colchester we were now on our way to Plymouth, a team not far from Ashton Gate, and one which does stir up a bit of a rivalry when the match comes around. We were looking for our fifth win of the season, so far suffering just the two losses. Just the one change from the Colchester win. Enoch Showunmi out with the injury he picked up, Malcolm Christie in to replace him.

Things started well for us and we were rewarded with a goal. Darren Byfield continuing his scoring run, big Jamie McCombe involved with the set-up to give Byfield an easy finish. That was about as good as it got all game. They levelled it up eight minutes later, Mathias Doumbe somehow running from his own half and never getting picked up firing one into the net.

At half-time we were still in with a shot, Ivan Sproule off for Liam Fontaine, the only sub. They took the lead just two minutes later, again poor defending with a long ball being flicked on and Ebanks-Blake playing it past Basso. It was all over on 51 minutes, poor defending now accounting for three out of the three goals. A cross by Halmosi should have easily been dealt with, but McCombe mis-controlled it and sent the ball into his own net. A change up top did very little, and with 23 minutes left on the clock they nailed the final nail into our coffin. Buzsáky hit an unstoppable shot from outside the area leaving Basso blinded by the mass of bodies in his way.

A poor defensive performance cost us again, the attackers still fighting to get us in the game. Another defensive player may be needed in the January transfer window. With Charlton coming to 'The Gate' next Saturday, we would really need to give a strong performance at the back to keep a quality side at bay.

Dull Charlton scrape away draw

Bristol City 0-0 Charlton

Bristol City surround referee after Sproule sending off

Charlton Athletic managed to scrape a 0-0 draw away at Bristol City. Bristol City had more shots on goal but a sending off with 20 minutes left scuppered their chances of getting a deserved three points. Charlton mustered six shots but not one of those made the keeper work.

Little chances were made throughout the game, shown by just four attempts hitting the target, all of those from Bristol City. Izale McLeod did hit the woodwork after just a minute from distance. Lee Trundle had the best chance of the game, having a shot saved by Nicky Weaver for seven yards out.

The only real incident of the game was Ivan Sproule being dismissed after picking up a second yellow card. His first yellow was for holding back Therry Racon, and then was given a dubious second yellow for obstructing the same man.

Jack Teague commented after the game on the improvement defence wise after the 4-1 Plymouth defeat. "We defended a lot better today. We were tight at the back and gave little away. I am pleased to have not lost, all points against top sides such as Charlton are good. I think the Sproule sending off was a tad harsh, will have to look into it a little more and maybe appeal to rescind the ban."

Alan Pardew was disappointed with his sides attacking prowess. "I am disappointed that we haven't made the keeper work once today. Not a single shot! That's unacceptable whatever level you are playing at. It's just a point today, but that's all we really deserved."

Terrible result!? Are you you out of your mind?

Charlton are expected to win the league! And we are expected to finish 20th. Bloody good result considering...

Good result there, excellent as you had 10 men. Sorry about forgeting to post, will be active in here from now on.

Good luck both of you and I can't wait till the table is posted. :p

I can...

Should be getting a game posted sometime in the near future, been away for the last few days, sit tight.

I think you would have taken that result at the start of the game, and even more when you had Ivan Sproule sent off. He received a second yellow for just obstructing??:noway

I know, disgraceful. Obviously we are a tad further in game time so we have to go back and take a look at the incidents, and I couldn't believe what he got it for when reading the report. I must have been outraged at the time :p

Match Day 8 - Not bad

We were back at Ashton Gate today for the first time in 3 weeks, but we faced a tough challenge in Charlton. They were predicted as favourites to lift the title this year, so we knew it would be a tough game no matter what sort of form they were in. Some top quality players lined up for their side, but I knew we could match them at least. Just the one change, Malcolm Christie a straight swap with Lee Trundle to the bench.

Well apart from an early scare in which Izale McLeod hit the bar in the very first minute, we were comfortable most of the game. They kept the ball well but our defence was strong, which was a real improvement from the last few games. Basso did nothing apart from hit a few goal kicks, which was a testament to the way we held tight. We had the chances to win it, but when Ivan Sproule got sent off with 20 minutes to go the game was effectively over in terms of us finding the net. A poor decision in my eyes. A second yellow for obstructing should never happen, not even if it's a first yellow. But things happen and Sproule will now miss the next game.

Overall a good result, although of course you never want to get a draw. The fans had a poor game to watch, but that happens in football. Next week's another game, and hopefully we can build on this and get all three points!
