New Zealand need 8 runs off 6 balls!

8 runs off 6 balls!!

This is now down to the last over of this cracking match between England and New Zealand. A 14 run over has greatly helped New Zealand inch closer to the target. New Zealand were greatly helped from a poor over from Paul Collingwood who bowled a wide ball for four. Off the fourth ball, MC Mullum scored another boundary and Harris scored 3 more runs to take New Zealand 8 runs away from the target with 6 balls to spare!

Ashley Giles to bowl the last over. The field being carefully set up by Micheal Vaughan to avoid New Zealand from scoring boundaries. Chris Harris and Brendon Mc Mullum try to cool themselves down before final pressure over! Vaughan dispersing his men to their respective positions in the field. The umpire gets ready for the final over and picks up the hat of Ashley Giles. The buzz around the stadium is electric. Many people sitting on the edge of their seats! A lot of them have have already started to celebrate their team's victory here! The commentators who had gone out for a break have all returned for this final nerve crackling over!

LETS GO DOWN TO THIS FINAL OVER!

WOW!!! A HUGE SIX BY CHRIS HARRIS!

Well, truly a match winning shot from Chris Harris. A ball with a flatter trajectory from Ashley Giles as Harris stepped out big to thump it way into the stands through mid on for a huge six. With it, the match is truly in New Zealand's bag. 1 more run needed off 5 balls!

New Zealand WIN by 5 wickets!

newzealandwin4at.jpg

New Zealand have won one of the most enthralling encounters by 5 wickets are still alive in this triangular tournament. New Zealand, needing 8 runs to win off the last over, have won with 4 balls to spare as England are left wondering as to where did they go wrong. Chris Harris spanked a huge six off the first ball and then Giles bowled a wide ball and then Harris took the single needed to complete a fantastic win for New Zealand! The New Zealand players are off to the ground to celebrate the win made possible mainly by two of their premier batsmen, Stephen Fleming and Scott Styris and also aided by Nathan Astle!

THRILLING WIN FOR NEW ZEALAND!

And that is a thrilling win for New Zealand at Auckland against England in the Adidas Tri Series also involving India. New Zealand, who lost two consecutive matches in a row, have fought back to stay in contention for a final berth by beating England here at Auckland by 5 wickets.

England started off well batting first and putting up a respectable score of 232 which one thought was enough on this wicket. Trescothick led the way with a fine 97 and aided by Andrew Flintoff's late burst of 40 from 25 balls.

New Zealand started off the run chase in a flourish with a 100+ stand between Astle and Fleming. Fleming played a little too slowly today but that did not deter him from finding his touch. He played wonderful shots around the ground. At the other end, Astle was aggressive, spanking the bad balls to the fence. Astle got out for 39 caught by Flintoff off Collingwood.

Styris joined Fleming and both motored along the New Zealand innings. Styris was in particular very good in his timing and timed the balls well to the ropes. Fleming at the other end started to get more and more defensive and was finally run out for 87. Mc Millan supported Styris until Styris got out for 51. After that, it was a case of the New Zealand batsmen holding their nerves which they did successfully with Harris hitting a big blow for six to almost seal the win for New Zealand!

New Zealand Scorecard!

Presentation Ceremony:

M.Crowe: Welcome to the presentation ceremony of the just concluded match between England and New Zealand where NZ have won by 5 wickets. To start with, I would like to call upon Micheal Vaughan. Disappointed with the loss Vaughan?

M.Vaughan (with a disappointed look): Yes, we are. We should have won this game after getting to 232. But credit to Fleming and their batsmen for batting well to win this game.

M.Crowe: This is your second loss in two days? How does it feel? How are your hopes of reaching the final?

M.Vaughan: It hurts to lose two games in two days. We were on the wrong side of the coin yesterday against India and today, New Zealand beat us only late in the match. Going by our game this series, I wont say we played badly. And let the best teams contest the final!

M.Crowe: Thanks Vaughan. And now I would like to call upon the New Zealand Stephen Fleming, who by the way, is also adjudged the Man of the Match for his fine innings of 87! Congrats Fleming

(Fleming receives the award)

S.Fleming: Thanks Martin. It feels great to win the match for the country. We were down with two defeats and its nice to bounce back with a win.

M.Crowe: One felt you were too slow today in your pacing
S.Fleming: Yes, I also noticed that. But it was also some tight bowling from England in the early stages. They did not bowl badly today at all. And it was one of those days where my timing wasnt too good.

M.Crowe: So, how do you rate your chances for entering the final?
S.Fleming: We would love to enter the final. We think we are capable of beating India in the next match. Even though they are a very good side, we are sure we have the capability to win. I hope for the best!

M.Crowe: Thanks Stephen. Thats all we have here from Auckland. See you in the match between India and New Zealand on Saturday. Until then, its bye bye from the studios.

Added a poll now! Vote for the team that will win the Adidas Tri Series!

POSSIBLE SCENARIOS after New Zealand's win!

The New Zealand victory has evoked all interest now in the final ODI between India and New Zealand. England must be cursing themselves for having to depend on the outcome of the next ODI to see if New Zealand or England enter the final. The whole English team remains in Auckland to watch this match! Now, the possible scenarios that can happen in the next match are to be discussed now.

  • If New Zealand win against India, they automatically qualify for the final!
  • If India win and without conceding a bonus point to New Zealand, then New Zealand are out of the tournament with England entering the final!
  • If India win but concede a bonus point to New Zealand, then New Zealand are tied on points with England (both tie on 5 points!). So the net run rate comes into calculation. According to the net run rate, if New Zealand bat first, they have to score 307+ runs off their alloted 49 overs (since its a Day/Night game!) for New Zealand to pip England to the final of the tournament. If they bowl first, then they have to score at a required run rate which will be announced if the situation arises!

Still, all to play for New Zealand. Considering India's batting strength, it seems highly unlikely that New Zealand might be able to bowl India out within the 40th over which would get them the bonus point. So, the best possible outcome for New Zealand would be to win Saturday's match and enter the final without any messy calculations!

Stephen Fleming for an interview with the press after the win

Reporter: Congrats on the win, Fleming. How does it feel after winning a game coming out from two defeats.

Fleming: It feels really happy to win a crucial game after two defeats. We prepared well for the game and did our homework as it should be done. We've reaped the benefits.

Reporter: Your innings was particularly slow today?
Fleming: I have heard this the second time today. Today, my timing was not at its best. And the English bowlers too bowled tight to me.

Reporter: Do you think New Zealand has a good chance of entering the final? India are at a peak form and should prove a tough ask

Fleming: We believe in the motto "Anything is possible". No one is inferior to anyone. And we have beaten India many times before. We still believe we can pull it off against India.

Reporter: Any plans you have on bowling India out within 40 overs? The calculations seems complex

Fleming: Calculations are not in our mind right now. We are focussed right now on BEATING INDIA TWICE in consecutive matches in this tournament!!!!
